Forthcoming releases 🚀

Next major releasemajor release A release, identified by the first two numbers (3.6), which is the focus of a full release cycle and feature development. WordPress uses decimaling count for major release versions, so 2.8, 2.9, 3.0, and 3.1 are sequential and comparable in scope.: 6.8

Next GutenbergGutenberg The Gutenberg project is the new Editor Interface for WordPress. The editor improves the process and experience of creating new content, making writing rich content much simpler. It uses ‘blocks’ to add richness rather than shortcodes, custom HTML etc. https://wordpress.org/gutenberg/ release: 20.3

The next Gutenberg release will be 20.3. It is scheduled for February 19 and will include the following issues.

The discussion section of the agenda is to provide a place to discuss important topics affecting the upcoming release or larger initiatives that impact the CoreCore Core is the set of software required to run WordPress. The Core Development Team builds WordPress. Team. Revert decision

• Site Editor: Revert addition of template types and areas to the REST API index. – As this data isn’t needed for public access, I’d like to revert the change and continue to use the settings for WordPress 6.8.

Enhancementenhancement Enhancements are simple improvements to WordPress, such as the addition of a hook, a new feature, or an improvement to an existing feature.

• DataViews: keep old data while new data is loading – The DataViews component has a isLoading prop that enables consumers to build this user experience (displays spinner when data is loading):

• Add inline font/text styling (font size and font family) to paragraph block – Currently there is no way to change the font size or font family of selected text in a paragraph blockBlock Block is the abstract term used to describe units of markup that, composed together, form the content or layout of a webpage using the WordPress editor. The idea combines concepts of what in the past may have achieved with shortcodes, custom HTML, and embed discovery into a single consistent API and user experience.
• Current “Style book” as a template – StyleBook – Currently the only way to list and see all the available blocks and their render of the current variation (colors, typo, etc), is to be in the editor and click on the “Style guide” button.
• Request: Offer option to toggle off keyboard shortcuts – Users have been accidentally triggering keyboard shortcuts (i.e. unintentionally deleting entire blocks). Providing an option to disable keyboard shortcuts will prevent this from happening or allow troubleshooting as needed.
• PR – Audio Block: Add live recording feature – Adds a live audio recording feature to the Audio Block, allowing users to record audio directly within the editor and automatically upload it to the media library.
• PR – Post Template Panel: Display popover on the left side of the sidebar  – For consistency in popover positioning
• PR – Generate built CSS file containing the admin color theme CSS custom properties – Adds a new build CSSCSS Cascading Style Sheets. file to the @WordPress.org/base-styles package that includes the adminadmin (and super admin) color scheme CSS custom properties.

• Style book: Change displayed colors per row to six – This issue is similar to #69162 but is about the style book. Recommending to use six colors per section in desktop

Regressionregression A software bug that breaks or degrades something that previously worked. Regressions are often treated as critical bugs or blockers. Recent regressions may be given higher priorities. A "3.6 regression" would be a bug in 3.6 that worked as intended in 3.5.

• Editor loading state shows flash of incorrect rendering mode – With some of the changes we recently applied to the “default rendering mode” we have introduced a regression in the loading state of the editor.
• PR – REST API: Adds the site reading options to the index – The /settings endpoint requires the manage_options capability to access the site settings and does not have a mechanism for readonly the settings.

@krupajnanda is seeking clarity on the Zoom out to compose with patterns feature for the WordPress 6.8 release. She is asking whether this feature will be included in the 6.8 release, or what the current status is.
