The WordPress coreCore Core is the set of software required to run WordPress. The Core Development Team builds WordPress. development team builds WordPress! Follow this site for general updates, status reports, and the occasional code debate. There’s lots of ways to contribute:

Found a bugbug A bug is an error or unexpected result. Performance improvements, code optimization, and are considered enhancements, not defects. After feature freeze, only bugs are dealt with, with regressions (adverse changes from the previous version) being the highest priority.? Create a ticket in the bug tracker.

Want to contribute? Get started quickly with tickets marked as good first bugs for new contributors or join a bug scrub. There’s more on the reports page, like patches needing testing, and on feature projects page.

The next WordPress Developers Chat will take place on Wednesday at 01:00 UTC in the core channel on Make WordPress Slack.

The live meeting will focus on the discussion for upcoming releases, and have an open floor section.

Announcements

WordPress 6.7 Beta 1 was released on October 1. Thank you to everyone who contributed to this release and attended the release party! There is a helpful guide here on how to help test this release.

Forthcoming releases

Next major releasemajor release A release, identified by the first two numbers (3.6), which is the focus of a full release cycle and feature development. WordPress uses decimaling count for major release versions, so 2.8, 2.9, 3.0, and 3.1 are sequential and comparable in scope.: 6.7

We are currently in the WordPress 6.7 release cycle. WordPress 6.7 BetaBeta A pre-release of software that is given out to a large group of users to trial under real conditions. Beta versions have gone through alpha testing in-house and are generally fairly close in look, feel and function to the final product; however, design changes often occur as part of the process. 2 is scheduled for Tuesday, October 8. For specific release times, review the release party schedule post.

Next maintenance release

There are no maintenance releases planned at this time.

Next GutenbergGutenberg The Gutenberg project is the new Editor Interface for WordPress. The editor improves the process and experience of creating new content, making writing rich content much simpler. It uses ‘blocks’ to add richness rather than shortcodes, custom HTML etc. https://wordpress.org/gutenberg/ release: 19.4

The next Gutenberg release will be 19.4, scheduled for October 9, and will include the following issues.

Unfortunately I cannot attend the meeting but I’d like to gather agreement on submitting a proposal for a WordPress devroom at the FOSDEM 2025 (Feb 1-2, 2025 in Brussels, Belgium). This proposal needs to be submitted by October 10, 2024.

Personally, I have spoken at FOSDEM 2024 about WordPress, specifically about our community’s Matrix efforts and it fueled inspiring conversations with members of other open sourceOpen Source Open Source denotes software for which the original source code is made freely available and may be redistributed and modified. Open Source **must be** delivered via a licensing model, see GPL. communities.

At FOSDEM 2024 there was also a FOSS Content Management devroom by the Open Website Alliance CMS devroom with a talk by @amieiro and a panel that involved WordPress.

I believe bringing a dedicated WordPress room to this open source conference could be beneficial for WordPress to connect more with other open source procjets. We could select talks for the devroom (given that they’d be proposed) that can inspire and take inspiration from other open source projects, for example about WordPress Playground, or how the WordPress project does translationtranslation The process (or result) of changing text, words, and display formatting to support another language. I am happy to be the one to submit the proposal and in case the devroom is selected, post the call for talks where we can guide potential speakers about the topics we’d like to see.

If we get to have a devroom at FOSDEM 2025, I’d encourage contributors to WordPress to submit proposals for talks and give them in person at the event. On October 21, 2024 the selected devrooms will be announced on the fosdem.org news section (RSS Feed).
