The next WordPress Developers Chat will take place on  Wednesday April 10, 2024 at 20:00 UTC in the core channel on Make WordPress Slack.

The live meeting will focus on the discussion for upcoming releases, and have an open floor section.

Announcements

WordPress 6.5.2 Maintenance and Security Release was released on Tuesday, April 9. WordPress version 6.5.1 could not be released due to a packaging error.

Forthcoming releases

Next major releasemajor release A release, identified by the first two numbers (3.6), which is the focus of a full release cycle and feature development. WordPress uses decimaling count for major release versions, so 2.8, 2.9, 3.0, and 3.1 are sequential and comparable in scope.: 6.6

We are officially in the WordPress 6.6 release cycle.

Next maintenance release: 6.5.3

There are currently 13 open tickets in the 6.5.3 release milestone.

Next GutenbergGutenberg The Gutenberg project is the new Editor Interface for WordPress. The editor improves the process and experience of creating new content, making writing rich content much simpler. It uses ‘blocks’ to add richness rather than shortcodes, custom HTML etc. https://wordpress.org/gutenberg/ release: 18.2

Gutenberg 18.1 was released on April 10 and included these issues. 18.2 is scheduled for April 24 and will include these issues.

Discussions

We will plan on following up on formalizing a release team for 6.6 and check in on the progress that the 6.5 release coordinators are making on organizing a release retro post (see this thread).

• Follow up from 6.5. Here are a set of issues that build on what’s landed from 6.5: Shadow: Enable drop shadow for classic themes, Block Hooks: Add UI to inform user about newly added hooked blocks, Data Views: Pages: Improve clarity of the Trash and Permanently delete flows, Add ability to preview template in post editor for non administrators, Font Library post-WP 6.5 Issues, and Tracking: global styles revisions ongoing enhancements.
• Overrides in Synced Patterns: Improve UX of synced pattern block toolbar to better align with future overrides, Exploration: Simpler outlines and synced pattern interactions PR to explore a few ideas to see what direction makes sense, and Improve override indication for editable blocks in synced patterns (changing from an outline around editable blocks to the background of blocks showing purple).
• Unifying site editor & post editor: Unify publish flow between post and site editors building on the work done to unify the packages for 6.5. This is a very early work in progress PR.
• Create BlockBlock Block is the abstract term used to describe units of markup that, composed together, form the content or layout of a webpage using the WordPress editor. The idea combines concepts of what in the past may have achieved with shortcodes, custom HTML, and embed discovery into a single consistent API and user experience. They can extend functionality or add new features to your WordPress websites. WordPress plugins are written in the PHP programming language and integrate seamlessly with WordPress. These can be free in the WordPress.org Plugin Directory https://wordpress.org/plugins/ or can be cost-based plugin from a third-party: Add theme json inspector has been added for the next release of the plugin, solving a big enhancementenhancement Enhancements are simple improvements to WordPress, such as the addition of a hook, a new feature, or an improvement to an existing feature. request!
• Extending templates: Update ‘Add template’ screen to prefer template_name label instead of singular_name enabling user friendly names for templates registered by plugins.
