# WP Notify – next steps

Now that we have finalized the [initial requirements](https://docs.google.com/document/d/1SoIaFqXkXiVzq5mizbZQafMfL36bD0WKj8iwYM823MI/edit?usp=sharing)
for the WP Notify project, it’s time to kick of the project build.

I would therefore like to open the floor for suggestions on how best to move forward.
I have some initial comments/questions, that I would like to gather feedback on.

 * We should probably start with designing/prototyping what the various pieces will
   look like.
    - What software will we use for design/prototyping
    - How will we gather feedback to the designs.
 * As discussed in our requirements document, this will be built as a feature pluginFeature
Plugin A plugin that was created with the intention of eventually being proposed
for inclusion in WordPress Core. See [Features as Plugins](https://make.wordpress.org/core/handbook/about/release-cycle/features-as-plugins/).
We therefore need to start the process of deciding on where/how this pluginPlugin
A plugin is a piece of software containing a group of functions that can be added
to a WordPress website. They can extend functionality or add new features to
your WordPress websites. WordPress plugins are written in the PHP programming
language and integrate seamlessly with WordPress. These can be free in the WordPress.
   org Plugin Directory [https://wordpress.org/plugins/](https://wordpress.org/plugins/)
or can be cost-based plugin from a third-party. will be built
    - Will we use GitHubGitHub GitHub is a website that offers online implementation
of git repositories that can easily be shared, copied and modified by other
developers. Public repositories are free to host, private repositories require
a paid subscription. GitHub introduced the concept of the ‘pull request’ where
code changes done in branches by contributors can be reviewed and discussed
before being merged by the repository owner. [https://github.com/](https://github.com/),
or WordPress style svn + tracTrac An open source project by Edgewall Software
that serves as a bug tracker and project management tool for WordPress.?
    - Are we able to start developing the framework of the plugin/making development
      decisions?
 * It would be ideal if we could identify/select two separate reps for these efforts,
a technical rep to manage the plugin development and a design rep to manage the
   design efforts.
    - How will we select these folks?
    - Do we have any candidates?
    - It’s important to note that these reps could change over time, but for now
I’m just considering how we deal with making decisions.
 * Is it time to resurrect the weekly meetings?

Please feel free to leave your comments/suggestions here, I’ll leave comments open
for 1 week until [Thursday, July 16, 2020, 20:00 UTC](https://www.timeanddate.com/worldclock/fixedtime.html?iso=20200716T2000),
and then use the feedback to help us define our next steps.

 3. Hi Jonathan, this is the first time i hear about that feature that sounds very
promising ! Digging on the internet I found this google doc : [https://docs.google.com/document/d/1SoIaFqXkXiVzq5mizbZQafMfL36bD0WKj8iwYM823MI/edit#heading=h.5sf8tgrl372a](https://docs.google.com/document/d/1SoIaFqXkXiVzq5mizbZQafMfL36bD0WKj8iwYM823MI/edit#heading=h.5sf8tgrl372a)

Is it still relevant ? Would you describe wp notify as some sort of internal messaging
system or more like a real time thing ? Have a good day, Benoit.

         I’m not sure what
do you mean with “messaging system or real time”, can you expand?

         - I believe he’s asking if this will be “internal” – an APIAPI An API or Application
Programming Interface is a software intermediary that allows programs to
interact with each other and share data in limited, clearly defined ways.
for plugins/code to render their notices. (Which it will be).
            Or “real
time” – if this will be a push notifications system (live – from wp-server
to browser-client). (I don’t think this is in the cards at the moment, right?)

      * [@mbcreation](https://profiles.wordpress.org/mbcreation/) thanks for asking,
I see [@folletto](https://profiles.wordpress.org/folletto/) has already confirmed
the link, but I’ve updated the original post with it as well.
      * As the document describes, The goal of WP Notify is to create a new (better)
way to manage and deliver notifications to the relevant audience.
      * So it could end up being real time, for now we’re focusing an an entirely different
way of managing and handle WP Adminadmin (and super admin) notifications.
      * I think we all can agree that the current implementation (admin_notices) is
just not up to the task of successfully and unobtrusively handling all the
notifications that plugins and themes create.

 11. Great to see this moving forward again. I’d love to help out in the design again,
I did a bunch of mockups for this already together with Alain Schlesser in our
previous effort to get this made. Not sure I can commit to being a lead yet, but
     it’s up for consideration.
 12. As software goes, I’d go with Figma as that’s what the design team uses. It has
a library of our design components in it and it has great collaboration and in-
     doc feedback features.
 13. To get that feedback, maybe we start by bringing the designs to the design team
meeting each week, and when we have a solid iteration we write a post to cast
a wider net? I’m not sure how to get a good representative amount of people to
input, maybe the design team or marketing has more ideas on that.

repo setup as it seems to be, we can have them discussed and reviewed there,
and that would be the primary place for feedback, similar to how GutenbergGutenberg
The Gutenberg project is the new Editor Interface for WordPress. The editor
improves the process and experience of creating new content, making writing
rich content much simpler. It uses ‘blocks’ to add richness rather than shortcodes,
        custom HTML etc.
        does things.
      * Everything else then builds on that: weekly calls, Make posts, etc.

      * That’s not a bad idea, I think what we’ll probably do is start with some designs,
based on what we’ve defined as our initial requirements, and then have a call
for feedback post on the make/design blogblog (versus network, site).
      * What might also be useful is if it would be possible to take your original
designs, and update them to reflect what we have in our requirements document,
        as a starting point.

            * It uses the admin_notices hook to add in the dismissal options, so it
              looks to be okay.

 27. I’ll be glad to help how I can, I’m more a project manager then a developer, but
can certainly contribute to design ideas as well.

 30. I’m unlikely to have the time to lead the design here, but I’d be more thank happy
to work as a 2nd designer on this to support the decisions, progress, and help
with the overall flows and organization.

      * Booooo, I was secretly hoping to be able to persuade you into the gig 🙂
      * Jokes aside, I do understand, and perhaps just having more folks with solid
design/user interface experience will be beneficial all round (I’m neither)

      Btw having the project on
GithubGitHub GitHub is a website that offers online implementation of git repositories
that can easily be shared, copied and modified by other developers. Public repositories
are free to host, private repositories require a paid subscription. GitHub introduced
the concept of the ‘pull request’ where code changes done in branches by contributors
can be reviewed and discussed before being merged by the repository owner. [https://github.com/](https://github.com/)
would as someone said make it more transparent and it would also be easier to
     contribute to various issues.
