Editor chat Summary: 18 March, 2020

This post summarizes the weekly editor chat meeting (agenda here) held on Wednesday, 18th March 2020 in Slack. Moderated by @jorgefilipecosta.

Opening Remarks

• It was noted that the chat was well attended.
• @jorgefilipecosta wished everyone the best with ongoing COVID-19 situation.
• @jorgefilipecosta noted that some teachers in Portugal are using the P2 WordPress theme to communicate with their students.

WordPress 5.4 Upcoming Release

• WordPress 5.4 RC3 was released yesterday [17 March 2020].
• Details of the editor fixes included in the release can be found on GithubGitHub GitHub is a website that offers online implementation of git repositories that can easily be shared, copied and modified by other developers. Public repositories are free to host, private repositories require a paid subscription. GitHub introduced the concept of the ‘pull request’ where code changes done in branches by contributors can be reviewed and discussed before being merged be the repository owner. https://github.com/.
• Next Monday [23 March 2020] will be the package publish date for the next RCrelease candidate One of the final stages in the version release cycle, this version signals the potential to be a final release to the public. Also see alpha (beta)..
• [As of 18 March 2010] there are 3 days left to merge things for WordPress 5.4 that will be tested during the RC period.
• Todo list for WordPress 5.4 is on the Github project board.
• 🙏The CoreCore Core is the set of software required to run WordPress. The Core Development Team builds WordPress. team are looking for folks to help with Reviews and PRs.

GutenbergGutenberg The Gutenberg project is the new Editor Interface for WordPress. The editor improves the process and experience of creating new content, making writing rich content much simpler. It uses ‘blocks’ to add richness rather than shortcodes, custom HTML etc. https://wordpress.org/gutenberg/ version 7.7.0

• Gutenberg 7.7.0 was released on 11 March 2020.
• 7.7.1 was subsequently released to address some bugs that were found.
• There was a discussion on the new UIUI User interface following a question from @mapk:
  • most people indicated they ❤️the new UI.
  • concerns were raised around corners, borders and the “sterile look”.
  • a lack of consistency with WP Admin was also a point of issue.

Monthly Plan / Weekly Priorities

• Highest priority is clearing the “must have board” for WP 5.4.

• @youknowriad highlighted the overview Issue for Full Site Editing – if you’re interested in working add your name next to one of the items.

Task Coordination Summary

Tasks that folks have been working on or that they plan to work on:

• @youknowriad is working on the Full Site Editing issues
• @andraganescu worked on Latest Posts, Navigation Block and WP Menus.
• @jorgefilipecosta proposed a new interface package.
• @nerrad worked on converting effects to actions as well as making `createInterpolateElement` stable.
• @brentswisher is working on Storybook Stories and PR cleanup.
• @itsjonq is continuing working on Design Tools.
• @aduth will be crushing 5.4 bugs and moving on to Full Site Editing.
• @mapk noted he has been working on triage.

Points from the Open Floor

• @jorgefilipecosta reminded everyone that to correctly attribute/props credits for BlockBlock Block is the abstract term used to describe units of markup that, composed together, form the content or layout of a webpage using the WordPress editor. The idea combines concepts of what in the past may have achieved with shortcodes, custom HTML, and embed discovery into a single consistent API and user experience. Editor contributions please ensure you’ve connected your WP.org profile to your Github profile.
• @paaljoachim drew attention to several PRs and Issues that need feedback or review.
