The proposed design focus list for 5.4 release

This release the design team have tried a little different process. This iteration started with collaborating to create a list of potential things to focus on for 5.4. As discussed in this week’s design meeting, the next step is to review a proposed list.

To try and focus things a little I have grouped these, ordered first by the projects everyone is focusing on this year. 5.4 sees updates as a focus here with that work starting. Thanks to @mapk for giving the issues for the editor and a review of this post.

Automatic PluginPlugin A plugin is a piece of software containing a group of functions that can be added to a WordPress website. They can extend functionality or add new features to your WordPress websites. WordPress plugins are written in the PHP programming language and integrate seamlessly with WordPress. These can be free in the WordPress.org Plugin Directory https://wordpress.org/plugins/ or can be cost-based plugin from a third-party, Theme, and Major CoreCore Core is the set of software required to run WordPress. The Core Development Team builds WordPress. Updates

• Automatic update opt-in setting for themes
• Automatic updates column for plugins screen

Editor

The things focusing on this release for the editor are foundational experience iterations, which lay the ground for later releases this year.

• Unify link interfaces in Gutenberg
• Video block subtitles
• Resizeable editor
• Group block custom text color
• Better labels for inputs
• Latest posts block – feature image
• Renaming block library categories
• Columns block width adjustment revisions

Buttons

• The disabled button doesn’t look disabled
• Change outline button hover background color

Privacy

• Mobile display of privacy request
• Progress indicator for export
• Export and erasure requests

Other (needs design feedback)

• Italic text removal
• Focus outline in Customizer
• List table action links visibility
• Password overflow
• Image alt improvements
• Improve add item function in menus
• Quick edit/bulk aren’t obvious
• wp_text_diff styling
• Add in response to
• Ajax search inference

Other (given feedback so need watching)

• Incorrect cursor
• Comment marked as spam displays poorly

Here is a list of things to potentially punt to future releases

If nobody objects these will be punted this week. Punting doesn’t mean they won’t be done a much as not this release.

• Establish guidelines for button order
• Discussion: links that look like buttons (and vice versa)
• Enhancement: improve tertiary button styles
• Proposal: improve distinction between buttons and other controls
• A consistent type scale for WordPress
• Moving block movers to the toolbar (editor)
• Add light borders (parent / child blocks)

Reviewing

As you look through the list and comment, it would be great to consider a few things:

• The release schedule is shorter with betaBeta A pre-release of software that is given out to a large group of users to trial under real conditions. Beta versions have gone through alpha testing in-house and are generally fairly close in look, feel and function to the final product; however, design changes often occur as part of the process. 1 on February 11th.
• What looks ready to release and will make the time frame or has to if you think about projects we are focusing on.
• Leave time with anything larger for testing.
