# 9 Projects for 2019

As mentioned in [this year’s State of the Word](https://2018.us.wordcamp.org/livestream/state-of-the-word/),
these are the nine priorities that we should focus on in 2019, in order to make
the biggest impact for WordPress users:

 1. Creating a blockBlock Block is the abstract term used to describe units of markup
that, composed together, form the content or layout of a webpage using the WordPress
editor. The idea combines concepts of what in the past may have achieved with
shortcodes, custom HTML, and embed discovery into a single consistent API and
     user experience. for navigation menus.
 2. Porting all existing widgets to blocks.
 3. Upgrading the widgets-editing areas in `wp-admin/widgets.php` and the CustomizerCustomizer
Tool built into WordPress core that hooks into most modern themes. You can use
it to preview and modify many of your site’s appearance settings. to support blocks.
 4. Providing a way for themes to visually register content areas, and exposing that
in GutenbergGutenberg The Gutenberg project is the new Editor Interface for WordPress.
The editor improves the process and experience of creating new content, making
writing rich content much simpler. It uses ‘blocks’ to add richness rather than
     shortcodes, custom HTML etc. [https://wordpress.org/gutenberg/](https://wordpress.org/gutenberg/).
 5. Merging [the site health check plugin](https://wordpress.org/plugins/health-check/)
into CoreCore Core is the set of software required to run WordPress. The Core
Development Team builds WordPress., to assist with debugging and encouraging good
     software hygiene.
 6. Providing a way for users to opt-in to automatic pluginPlugin A plugin is a piece
of software containing a group of functions that can be added to a WordPress website.
They can extend functionality or add new features to your WordPress websites.
WordPress plugins are written in the PHP programming language and integrate seamlessly
with WordPress. These can be free in the WordPress.org Plugin Directory [https://wordpress.org/plugins/](https://wordpress.org/plugins/)
or can be cost-based plugin from a third-party. and theme updates.
 7. Providing a way for users to opt-in to automatic updates of major Core releases.
 8. Building a WordPress.orgWordPress.org The community site where WordPress code
is created and shared by the users. This is where you can download the source
code for WordPress core, plugins and themes as well as the central location for
     community conversations and organization. [https://wordpress.org/](https://wordpress.org/)
directory for discovering blocks, and a way to seamlessly install them.
 9. Forming a Triagetriage The act of evaluating and sorting bug reports, in order
to decide priority, severity, and other factors. team to tackle our [6,500 open issues on Trac](https://core.trac.wordpress.org/query?status=accepted&status=assigned&status=new&status=reopened&status=reviewing&order=priority).

            * I’m curious to hear what you would like to see specifically. Or is it
just that it wasn’t discussed at all? I feel similar about security.

a secure means of sending data over the internet. Used for authenticated

and privacy aren’t the shiney new objects that a new design is. That
crowd was tough! Lol. At least the PHPPHP The web scripting language

               - A commitment to privacy-by-design as an underlying development principle
would be a good start. Instead, there seems to be a casual disrespect
for privacy (and accessibilityAccessibility Accessibility (commonly
shortened to a11y) refers to the design of products, devices, services,
or environments for people with disabilities. The concept of accessible
design ensures both “direct access” (i.e. unassisted) and “indirect
access” meaning compatibility with a person’s assistive technology(
for example, computer screen readers). (https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/

that! I work with writers who are not very web savvy, and having the ability
to copy and paste from a tool they are comfortable with is really nice!!

 11. May I ask this here? This sounds good, all upcoming phases. However, it makes
     me fear.
 12. Does it make sense to build websites for clients now? In 1 year, when themes,
plugins, widgets and menus have changed, what will happen then with these websites?
 13. How will the pluginPlugin A plugin is a piece of software containing a group of

re-make 10-years-worth of custom websites in 3-4 years? Plus re-training

            * It’s a burden on devs to do all this updating, but I have precisely zero
clients whose websites haven’t been redone for 10 years. If your site
is that old, it’s time for a redesign anyway. I have two clients who
are going through rebrands right now, and that makes a perfect opportunity
to move their sites over to GutenbergGutenberg The Gutenberg project

              Classic Editor for them.

 58. AccessibilityAccessibility Accessibility (commonly shortened to a11y) refers to
the design of products, devices, services, or environments for people with disabilities.
The concept of accessible design ensures both “direct access” (i.e. unassisted)
and “indirect access” meaning compatibility with a person’s assistive technology(
for example, computer screen readers). (https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Accessibility)
is not a separate project so should not be listed as it, that’s some every phase
should include during all stages, not something that should be done as something
separate or as a new feature to be done.

      * I agree with this sentiment. It should already be a part of the process and
I think all the teams have learned a great bit about how to communicate better
which should hopefully prevent a repeat this time.

 66. Hello! First of all, thanks for the incredible work you do.
 67. I was wondering, one of the biggest flaws for WordPress is the loading speed.
 68. And one of the things that can be really inproved by 50% – 70% is the image size
by using the webp format (which is not supported by WordPress).
 69. I do understand that webp formar is not supported by all browsers, in that case
a fallback to jpg/png should be done.
 70. This seems to be a really good feature for coreCore Core is the set of software
required to run WordPress. The Core Development Team builds WordPress. WordPress,
conversion to webp and fallback to jpg/png when the browser does not support will
     reduce the loading time.
