# WordPress 5.0 for Contributors and Committers

GutenbergGutenberg The Gutenberg project is the new Editor Interface for WordPress.
The editor improves the process and experience of creating new content, making writing
rich content much simpler. It uses ‘blocks’ to add richness rather than shortcodes,
custom HTML etc. [https://wordpress.org/gutenberg/](https://wordpress.org/gutenberg/)
is a big project, and many WordPress contributors have limited hours in which they
can contribute. This makes getting up to speed on the scope of Gutenberg a daunting(
if not insurmountable, at least in the WordPress 5.0 timeline) task. With this phase
of the Gutenberg project setting the stage for the future of WordPress development,
I’m sure you’re wanting to get involved in whatever way you can, so my goal is to
help you get up to speed as quickly as possible. Every one of you has different
skills, availability, and experience with the Gutenberg project, so the Gutenberg
and WordPress 5.0 teams need your help to prioritise what information you need.

If you’re an experienced contributor or committercommitter A developer with commit
access. WordPress has five lead developers and four permanent core developers with
commit access. Additionally, the project usually has a few guest or component committers-
a developer receiving commit access, generally for a single release cycle (sometimes
renewed) and/or for a specific component. who has time available during the WordPress
5.0 release cycle, and want to be able to make meaningful contributions towards
making WordPress 5.0 awesome, you’re exactly who I need to hear from.

Please reply to this post with information about your availability, what components
of WordPress you have experience in, and (if you haven’t got involved with Gutenberg
yet) what you feel has been getting in the way.

## In the mean time…

While we’re sorting out which tasks are available, please read Gutenberg’s [Getting Started](https://github.com/WordPress/gutenberg/blob/master/CONTRIBUTING.md#getting-started)
documentation, and get a Gutenberg environment up and running. The helper scripts
in the Gutenberg repo use Docker, but if you already have an environment you prefer,
there’s no need to switch: just make sure you have Node 8.x (or higher), and the
latest NPM installed.

There are a few places where you can start straight away, depending on which components
are of particular interest to you:

 * [@danielbachhuber](https://profiles.wordpress.org/danielbachhuber/) has a regularly
   updated [list of REST API tasks](https://danielbachhuber.com/wp-5-0-rest-api-tasks/#next),
   with a summary of what each issue requires.
 * If you’re interested in backwards compatibility issues, there’s [a list of issues currently milestoned for WordPress 5.0](https://github.com/WordPress/gutenberg/issues?q=is%3Aopen+is%3Aissue+milestone%3A%22WordPress+5.0%22+label%3A%22Backwards+Compatibility%22).
 * Similarly, there are [a few Media issues](https://github.com/WordPress/gutenberg/issues?q=is%3Aopen+is%3Aissue+milestone%3A%22WordPress+5.0%22+label%3AMedia)
   that need attention, too.
 * We also have some issues that are [depending on Core bug fixes](https://github.com/WordPress/gutenberg/issues?utf8=%E2%9C%93&q=is%3Aopen+is%3Aissue+milestone%3A%22WordPress+5.0%22+label%3A%22%5BType%5D+WP+Core+Bug%22+),
   which would be great to get fixed up.
 * There’s [documentation to be written and managed](https://github.com/WordPress/gutenberg/milestone/50),
   we also need to figure out which parts of the documentation need to be moved
   out of the [Gutenberg Handbook](https://wordpress.org/gutenberg/handbook/), and
   where each part should go.

I’m also putting in a special request for folks to help with triaging TracTrac An
open source project by Edgewall Software that serves as a bug tracker and project
management tool for WordPress. reports:

 * [Open tickets in the 5.0 milestone](https://core.trac.wordpress.org/query?status=accepted&status=assigned&status=new&status=reopened&status=reviewing&milestone=5.0&group=component&col=id&col=summary&col=status&col=milestone&col=owner&col=type&col=priority&order=priority)
   need to be reviewed, most of them should be moved to the 5.0.1 or 5.1 milestones.
 * [Closed tickets in the 5.0 milestone](https://core.trac.wordpress.org/query?status=closed&milestone=5.0&group=component&col=id&col=summary&col=status&col=milestone&col=owner&col=type&col=priority&order=priority)
   need to be reviewed, and reopened if the need to be ported to the 5.0 branchbranch
   A directory in Subversion. WordPress uses branches to store the latest development
   code for each major release (3.9, 4.0, etc.). Branches are then updated with
   code for any minor releases of that branch. Sometimes, a major version of WordPress
   and its minor versions are collectively referred to as a "branch", such as "the
   4.0 branch".. If they don’t need to be in 5.0, there are two options:
    - If they should be in a 5.0.x release, move them to the 5.0.1 milestone, and
      reopen them for porting after 5.0 is released.
    - If they can wait until 5.1, move them to the 5.1 milestone. If they need changes
      due to the milestone move (eg, inline documentation needs to be updated to
      the new version), reopen them.
 * [Open tickets in the 4.9.9 milestone](https://core.trac.wordpress.org/query?status=accepted&status=assigned&status=new&status=reopened&status=reviewing&milestone=4.9.9&group=component&col=id&col=summary&col=status&col=milestone&col=owner&col=type&col=priority&order=priority)
   will mostly be moved to the 5.0.1 milestone, though there may be some that are
   appropriate for 5.0.
 * [Closed tickets in the 4.9.9 milestone](https://core.trac.wordpress.org/query?status=closed&milestone=4.9.9&group=component&col=id&col=summary&col=status&col=milestone&col=owner&col=type&col=priority&order=priority)
   will probably need to be reopened and moved to the 5.0 or 5.0.1 milestones.

These are just a few areas you can explore to get started. If there’s a different
area you’d like to be contributing to, please say so, and we’ll see what we can
find!

     for the RESTful Application Program Interface (API) that uses HTTP requests to
     GET, PUT, POST and DELETE data. It is how the front end of an application (think“

     is the main hurdle. The docs say Docker isn’t necessary, but I’m not very familiar
     with a lot of the node stuff, like running end-to-end tests with Puppeteer.
 41. I’d either appreciate some more documentation pointing how to proceed in a non-
     Docker environment (beyond just install node and npm; like how to run code linter
     and lots of the tasks the *.sh files take care of for Docker users), or I’ll try

     the switch to Docker.

      I’d like to help from bundled themes to a11yAccessibility Accessibility (
     commonly shortened to a11y) refers to the design of products, devices, services,
     or environments for people with disabilities. The concept of accessible design
     ensures both “direct access” (i.e. unassisted) and “indirect access” meaning compatibility
     with a person’s assistive technology (for example, computer screen readers). (

        Beta versions have gone through alpha testing in-house and are generally fairly
        close in look, feel and function to the final product; however, design changes
        often occur as part of the process.-rc-final packages…

 64. I am available around 10 ~ 15 hours/week. I’ve been contributing in GithubGitHub
     GitHub is a website that offers online implementation of git repositories that
     can easily be shared, copied and modified by other developers. Public repositories
     are free to host, private repositories require a paid subscription. GitHub introduced
     the concept of the ‘pull request’ where code changes done in branches by contributors
     can be reviewed and discussed before being merged by the repository owner. [https://github.com/](https://github.com/).
