# Gutenberg component organisation update

GutenbergGutenberg The Gutenberg project is the new Editor Interface for WordPress.
The editor improves the process and experience of creating new content, making writing
rich content much simpler. It uses ‘blocks’ to add richness rather than shortcodes,
custom HTML etc. [https://wordpress.org/gutenberg/](https://wordpress.org/gutenberg/)
touches many areas of WordPress across multiple components. In preparation for merge
proposal, separate GitHubGitHub GitHub is a website that offers online implementation
of git repositories that can easily be shared, copied and modified by other developers.
Public repositories are free to host, private repositories require a paid subscription.
GitHub introduced the concept of the ‘pull request’ where code changes done in branches
by contributors can be reviewed and discussed before being merged by the repository
owner. [https://github.com/](https://github.com/) milestones for the different component
areas have been created. This helps clarify the remaining focus areas Gutenberg
needs to tackle before merge, and also makes it easier for component maintainers
and contributors to keep track of the remaining work.

**Merge Milestones:**

 * Rest APIREST API The REST API is an acronym for the RESTful Application Program
   Interface (API) that uses HTTP requests to GET, PUT, POST and DELETE data. It
   is how the front end of an application (think “phone app” or “website”) can communicate
   with the data store (think “database” or “file system”) [https://developer.wordpress.org/rest-api/](https://developer.wordpress.org/rest-api/):

 * Media: [https://github.com/WordPress/gutenberg/milestone/42](https://github.com/WordPress/gutenberg/milestone/42)
 * Customization: [https://github.com/WordPress/gutenberg/milestone/44](https://github.com/WordPress/gutenberg/milestone/44)
 * CoreCore Core is the set of software required to run WordPress. The Core Development
   Team builds WordPress.: [https://github.com/WordPress/gutenberg/milestone/45](https://github.com/WordPress/gutenberg/milestone/45)
 * Back Compatback compat Backward compatibility - a desire to ensure that plugins
   and themes do not break under new releases - is a driving philosophy of WordPress.
   While it is a commonly accepted software development practice to break compatibility
   in major releases, WordPress strives to avoid this at all costs. Any backward
   incompatible change is carefully considered by the entire core development team
   and announced, with affected plugins often contacted. It should be noted that
   external libraries, such as jQuery, do have backward incompatible changes between
   major releases, which is often going to be a greater concern for developers.:

 * Editor: [https://github.com/WordPress/gutenberg/milestone/22](https://github.com/WordPress/gutenberg/milestone/22)
 * i18ni18n Internationalization, or the act of writing and preparing code to be
   fully translatable into other languages. Also see [localization](https://make.wordpress.org/core/2018/04/17/gutenberg-component-organisation-update/?output_format=md#l10n).
   Often written with a lowercase i so it is not confused with a lowercase L or
   the numeral 1. Often an acquired skill.: [https://github.com/WordPress/gutenberg/milestone/49](https://github.com/WordPress/gutenberg/milestone/49)
 * Plugins: [https://github.com/WordPress/gutenberg/milestone/48](https://github.com/WordPress/gutenberg/milestone/48)–
   this includes extensibility and metaboxes.
 * Themes: [https://github.com/WordPress/gutenberg/milestone/46](https://github.com/WordPress/gutenberg/milestone/46)

In addition to core components, there are now milestones for the following areas:

 * AccessibilityAccessibility Accessibility (commonly shortened to a11y) refers
   to the design of products, devices, services, or environments for people with
   disabilities. The concept of accessible design ensures both “direct access” (
   i.e. unassisted) and “indirect access” meaning compatibility with a person’s
   assistive technology (for example, computer screen readers). (https://en.wikipedia.
   org/wiki/Accessibility): [https://github.com/WordPress/gutenberg/milestone/43](https://github.com/WordPress/gutenberg/milestone/43)
 * Documentation:  [https://github.com/WordPress/gutenberg/milestone/50](https://github.com/WordPress/gutenberg/milestone/50)

### What belongs in a merge proposal milestone?

These milestones are for the ‘must haves,’ and contain blockers for merge proposal.
For additional feature ideas or future planned features, there are now the following
milestones:

 * Bonus Features: [https://github.com/WordPress/gutenberg/milestone/32](https://github.com/WordPress/gutenberg/milestone/32)
 * Future: [https://github.com/WordPress/gutenberg/milestone/35](https://github.com/WordPress/gutenberg/milestone/35)

 3. I’ve added another milestone for the “Build Tools” component:
 4. [https://github.com/WordPress/gutenberg/milestone/51](https://github.com/WordPress/gutenberg/milestone/51)
 5. I’ll start creating a few issues outline what is required from the build tools
