WordPress 4.9 release delayed by one day

Found a bugbug A bug is an error or unexpected result. Performance improvements, code optimization, and are considered enhancements, not defects. After feature freeze, only bugs are dealt with, with regressions (adverse changes from the previous version) being the highest priority.? Create a ticket in the bug tracker.

The 4.9 release was due out today (November 14th), however issues with shortcodes within widgets (#42548) and changes to the Editor (#42530) occurred during release preparations. The new target release date is tomorrow (November 15th). It doesn't serve anybody well to delay things this late in the day, but it's essential to ensure the late fixes which have landed in the last few days are well tested.

We will do a release dry-run today at November 14th, 23:00 UTC / 23:00 UTC in #core after the code freeze, depending on the availability of the lead devs. An update will be posted that includes a link to a nightly build after the code freeze.

We've re-scheduled the 4.9 release to occur tomorrow at November 15th, 23:00 UTC / 23:00 UTC.

For future release improvements: I love the new customizerCustomizer Tool built into WordPress core that hooks into most modern themes. You can use it to preview and modify many of your site’s appearance settings. options, especially now that we can schedule, or save draft copies of the changes, and there is a preview link generated for them. However, this feature would be 100 times more useful, if we could save multiple copies of drafts and schedule multiple changes to take affect.

Specifically with the multiple draft options, we can truly have multiple designers pitching various ideas to the customer to choose from, or one designer pitching numerous ideas, and ESPECIALLY this would be really useful to theme developers, displaying many possibilities without spending endless hours setting up various demos, etc…

I hope in the future the code developers consider adding multiple drafts and multiple scheduling in the customizer.

  @nick6352683 Thanks, and you’re in luck! You can enable the ability to have multiple drafts and scheduled changesets concurrently. This is the “branching” mode that is discussed on the dev note. As noted in that section, the Customize Snapshots pluginPlugin A plugin is a piece of software containing a group of functions that can be added to a WordPress website. They can extend functionality or add new features to your WordPress websites. WordPress plugins are written in the PHP programming language and integrate seamlessly with WordPress. These can be free in the WordPress.org Plugin Directory https://wordpress.org/plugins/ or can be cost-based plugin from a third-party provides the additional UIUI User interface for being able to list and manage changesets when there is more than one in existence. Please test the pull request that makes the necessary updates for 4.9.
