Feature Plugin Chat on Tuesday, Jan 12

As mentioned in the dev chat notes, we’ll be holding a Feature PluginFeature Plugin A plugin that was created with the intention of eventually being proposed for inclusion in WordPress Core. See Features as Plugins. Chat on Tuesday, January 12, 2016 at 2100 UTC (the usual dev chat time).

Please come if you’re looking for feedback on your Feature Plugin, are interested in a merge in 4.5, or have a Feature Plugin idea that you’d like to propose!

It’s an adminadmin (and super admin) plugin that visually shows the timeline / release history for WP (Mainly so my clients can see how old their site is compared to previous versions etc)

I don’t think it will be ready for a WP 4.5 release but I think it’s almost stable enough for it to be reviewed and optimized (I’m going to release it as a plugin in the repository)

  I tend to think that users shouldn’t have to worry about the version of WordPress that they’re using, and that the decision on what version is best should be handled for them.
  
  Currently, WordPress suggests the newest version and provides an easy way to upgrade. Long term, I’d like to see this handled by WordPress automatically (as it is currently by many hosts). The emphasis being on less and less user intervention being necessary.

  That said, it’s possible I’m not getting a complete idea of what you’re suggesting, so feel free to pingPing The act of sending a very small amount of data to an end point. Ping is used in computer science to illicit a response from a target server to test it’s connection. Ping is also a term used by Slack users to @ someone or send them a direct message (DM). Users might say something along the lines of “Ping me when the meeting starts.” me with the URLURL A specific web address of a website or web page on the Internet, such as a website’s URL www.wordpress.org when it gets posted on the repo, and I’m happy to take a look at the plugin.

Hey Mike, thanks for the reply.

I agree that updates are best handled in the background and shouldn’t be something users need to worry about overall.

These can be free in the WordPress.org Plugin Directory https://wordpress.org/plugins/ or can be cost-based plugin from a third-party I’m building is mainly so users can see what version they are on and see how far away the latest version is from their current version. This process was useful for some of my clients who would for example be on WordPress 3.2 and update to 4.4 and break stuff in the process. It’s mainly a way for them to see in practical terms how old their current setup is.

I kinda imagined this would be on another screen that is displayed near the ‘update to X’ WordPress notification (it would display a chart / interactive layout showing the versions / sub versions and when they were released)

Once I get it up and running as a plugin I’ll send you the URLURL A specific web address of a website or web page on the Internet, such as a website’s URL www.wordpress.org to have a look.

I would like to introduce my new pluginPlugin A plugin is a piece of software containing a group of functions that can be added to a WordPress website. They can extend functionality or add new features to your WordPress websites. WordPress plugins are written in the PHP programming language and integrate seamlessly with WordPress. These can be free in the WordPress.org Plugin Directory https://wordpress.org/plugins/ or can be cost-based plugin from a third-party “Secure AXS”. Its primary purpose is to prevent spam login, automated brute-force attacks targeting the default wp-login.php of WordPress by easily creating a
custom login URLURL A specific web address of a website or web page on the Internet, such as a website’s URL www.wordpress.org.

What I think is new is that plugin doesn’t change .htaccess or depend on its setup, it also doesn’t create a new page to show the login panel. Instead it blocks access to default login url, pushes the login panel of the plugin when the url defined from plugin settings is requested.

The login panel uses default nonce check functionality of wordpress to secure the login process, Secure AXS is compatible with all the permalink setups including the default option, also works nicely with other major security plugins (i.e Sucuri, Wordfence).

The plugin offers easy to use settings to brand the login page with custom colors and image. I am currently working on adding more features to further improve security, It would be great if you can review the plugin and send me feedback when you get a chance, looking forward to it, the URL is: https://wordpress.org/plugins/secure-axs/
