Kicking off the oEmbed Feature Plugin

On Monday during the feature plugin chat we proposed a new pluginPlugin A plugin is a piece of software containing a group of functions that can be added to a WordPress website. They can extend functionality or add new features to your WordPress websites. WordPress plugins are written in the PHP programming language and integrate seamlessly with WordPress. These can be free in the WordPress.org Plugin Directory https://wordpress.org/plugins/ or can be cost-based plugin from a third-party to explore making WordPress itself an oEmbed provider.

That means that instead of just embedding YouTube videos or tweets you would be able to paste the URLURL A specific web address of a website or web page on the Internet, such as a website’s URL www.wordpress.org of a blogblog (versus network, site) post and a short preview gets embedded right away.

There’s already a proof-of-concept plugin on GitHubGitHub GitHub is a website that offers online implementation of git repositories that can easily be shared, copied and modified by other developers. Public repositories are free to host, private repositories require a paid subscription. GitHub introduced the concept of the ‘pull request’ where code changes done in branches by contributors can be reviewed and discussed before being merged be the repository owner. https://github.com/, where development will happen. Luckily, @melchoyce made some mockups for embedded WordPress posts. Here’s an example with the Twenty Fifteen theme:

Regarding point no. 4, there are many things that we need to keep in mind, for example:

Embedded content should be easily customisable
oEmbed requires lots of trust. Security is very important, while still maintaining ease of use.

I won’t be able to make the 7/20 chat, but want to share that I’m pretty excited about this concept.

We’re implementing something similar for a client right now and I use a similar idea on a personal site. In both cases, it’s a custom display of custom post typeCustom Post Type WordPress can hold and display many different types of content. A single item of such a content is generally called a post, although post is also a specific post type. Custom Post Types gives your site the ability to have templated posts, to simplify the concept. data (e.g. including post metaMeta Meta is a term that refers to the inside workings of a group. For us, this is the team that works on internal WordPress sites like WordCamp Central and Make WordPress.) that is being displayed. It would be sad if the coreCore Core is the set of software required to run WordPress. The Core Development Team builds WordPress. implementation did not allow for custom post types or customized templates.

Here’s an example from my personal site of real-world usage. We embed a preview of a book review into blogblog (versus network, site) posts when it’s contextually relevant. Here’s what that looks like:

Note that this implementation isn’t a true oEmbed provider (you can’t whitelist my site and start embedding book reviews yet). But it’s a similar editorial experience to true oEmbed and at 10up we have at least one client project in development to make content on the site true oEmbed endpoints for easier sharing and cross-linking on their networknetwork (versus site, blog) and on installs they manage outside the central multisitemultisite Used to describe a WordPress installation with a network of multiple blogs, grouped by sites.   I have been implementing this for clients with shortcodes (ex. [embed post_id="7"]) that are generated through a search functionality on the tinymce editor, although I think a URLURL A specific web address of a website or web page on the Internet, such as a website’s URL www.wordpress.org is better for most users. Also, I wonder how often people will want to be oEmbed-ing their own posts? Maybe allow for some extra filters so that if it’s on their own site they can grab that metaMeta Meta is a term that refers to the inside workings of a group. For us, this is the team that works on internal WordPress sites like WordCamp Central and Make WordPress. content and apply their own styles?
