# Post Meta Team Introductory Meeting

Hi folks! I’d like to introduce a new pluginPlugin A plugin is a piece of software
containing a group of functions that can be added to a WordPress website. They can
extend functionality or add new features to your WordPress websites. WordPress plugins
are written in the PHP programming language and integrate seamlessly with WordPress.
These can be free in the WordPress.org Plugin Directory [https://wordpress.org/plugins/](https://wordpress.org/plugins/)
or can be cost-based plugin from a third-party. team in its nascent stages: Post
MetaMeta Meta is a term that refers to the inside workings of a group. For us, this
is the team that works on internal WordPress sites like WordCamp Central and Make
WordPress. (nickname TBD). We’ll be having our introductory meeting [ Tuesday, November 26, 2013, 22:00 UTC ](https://www.timeanddate.com/worldclock/fixedtime.html?iso=20131126T2200)
in #wordpress-coreCore Core is the set of software required to run WordPress. The
Core Development Team builds WordPress.-plugins on freenode. Further meetings TBD.

When I talk about Post Meta here, I’m talking about the Post Meta developer’s experience
from the back-end – creating input elements for meta fields in a programatic method.
There have been a slew of libraries/frameworks/plugins ([CMB](https://github.com/jaredatch/Custom-Metaboxes-and-Fields-for-WordPress),
[SCB](https://github.com/scribu/wp-scb-framework), [WPAlchemy](https://github.com/farinspace/wpalchemy),
[ACF](https://wordpress.org/plugins/advanced-custom-fields/), [Pods](https://wordpress.org/plugins/pods/)),
which have filled this role for the moment. We’ll look to these as spiritual prequels
to a new core-worthy plugin.

Improving Post Meta support in this way connects to other parts of the adminadmin(
and super admin) area codebase. After all, should there be that much diff in the
code for a custom post meta box versus a custom settings page? For more on this
topic, here is some suggested reading: [#18285: New Settings API and workflow](https://core.trac.wordpress.org/ticket/18285),
[#18179: WP_Meta_Box](https://make.wordpress.org/core/2013/11/25/post-meta-team-introductory-meeting/core.trac.wordpress.org/ticket/18179?output_format=md).

For our introductory meeting, let’s plan on talking at a high-level about the issues
at hand, and what we might want from a new plugin. See you there!

by Human Made which is IMO a lot better with the added repeater fields, and columns)
heavily and am happy to offer up some feedback here.

 9. Great news! The coreCore Core is the set of software required to run WordPress.
The Core Development Team builds WordPress. is really missing that.
 10. If you’re looking at the plugins mentioned for inspiration etc., please also
look at some other like my own Simple Fields [https://wordpress.org/plugins/simple-fields/](https://wordpress.org/plugins/simple-fields/)
and Magic Fields [http://magicfields.org/](http://magicfields.org/). They all
feature they unique take on custom fields. Perhaps to best solution out there

 11. Anyway, I would love to drop support for my pluginPlugin A plugin is a piece

 35. Please count me in too. I’ve been working on this type of functionality for client
products for the past 3 years.
 36. One thing I think it would be good to clarify is the target audience. Is this
for end-users to be able to add fields to existing post types such as Advanced
Custom Fields allows, or is this for developers to add fields to custom post
types in plugins much like register_post_type() is how a plug can add custom
post types to WordPress? I would vote for the latter and then later build the
former on top because if you start with end-user functionality you are likely
to make it much harder to support deployment needs of developers.
 37. Case in point is post types vs. menus & menu items; it is really difficult to
build and deployDeploy Launching code from a local development environment to
the production web server, so that it's available to visitors. menus programmatically
in WordPress but it is super easy to add (and deploy) custom post types.

       * Based on the discussions that have led up to this, the focus is on the developer/

a form builder idiom like Django’s, in a way. Fieldmanager is available on WordPress
VIP sites, and in use on a number of them, including NYPost.com and KFF.org.
It supports adding fields to users, terms, settings forms, and (in a fork) quick

 51. I can’t make it to the meeting, so I want to voice a few thoughts here.
 52. One of the key pieces of post metaMeta Meta is a term that refers to the inside
workings of a group. For us, this is the team that works on internal WordPress
sites like WordCamp Central and Make WordPress., settings pages, etc., is displaying,
validating, and saving form fields. Right now, WordPress outputs form fields
      by doing things like:
 53.  echo ”;
 54. Personally, I find this atrocious. We should have an APIAPI An API or Application
Programming Interface is a software intermediary that allows programs to interact
with each other and share data in limited, clearly defined ways. for building
the form/element structure without worrying about the HTMLHTML HyperText Markup
Language. The semantic scripting language primarily used for outputting content
in web browsers. My own contribution to this is at [https://github.com/jbrinley/wp-forms](https://github.com/jbrinley/wp-forms).
      You can do things like:
 55.  echo WP_Form_Element::create(‘text’)
       ->set_name(‘my_field_name’) ->set_label(
__(‘My Field Label’) ->set_description(‘This is where you put your first name’)-
      >set_default_value(get_post_meta($post_id, ‘_my_field’, true));
 56. Or you can structure elements into a form (or a partial form), which other plugins
can hook into to modify the form before rendering.
 57. I’d like to see a solution that could be used for both themeable front-end forms
and for back-end forms, but for the purposes of the post meta team, a simpler
back-end-only solution might be the place to start.
 58. The other end of the process is validation and saving. I’d like to see a solution
that avoids developers having to worry about adding nonces to every meta box
and that avoids developers having to access $_POST directly. I.e., we can set
up some callbacks that will be given the submitted data via an argument, and
that can trust that WP has already verified the nonce from the submission.
 59. Again, I did some work on this with WP Forms, but I’m not going to say that this
      is THE solution for WP.
 60. And finally, can we have a way of aborting the save if fields don’t validate?
I.e., a user clicks the Publish button on a post, and some meta fields have invalidinvalid
A resolution on the bug tracker (and generally common in software development,
sometimes also _notabug_) that indicates the ticket is not a bug, is a support
request, or is generally invalid. values. Now we have a post that is published
but has bad data. A developer can, of course, work around this, but it would
be nice if WP handled a lot of that, taking the user back to the edit screen
with invalid fields highlighted and nothing saved yet.

       * I really hope we don’t end up encouraging method chaining like you are showing
above. Method chaining is a PITA to debug and it adds procedural logic element
to what should otherwise be declarative, IMO Defining fields and using fields
should not require themer’s to learn OOP.
       * // In init hook in pluginPlugin A plugin is a piece of software containing

__( ‘My Field Label’ ), ‘description’ => __( ‘This is where you put your first

       * // In theme template file
       * the_field( ‘my_field_name’, array(
          ‘default_value’ => get_field( ‘my_field’)));
       * We should definitely use OOP to implement this, but we should not require
the existing themers to up their game significant just to be able to participate.
       * Also, separating definition from usage means we can cache the definitions
to improve performance and it also means we could have a form of reflection
allows us to write code that inspect the fields that have been defined.

 67. Just to get some musings out there for discussion in advance of the actual meeting…
I think if this could possibly address parts of point #3 of [The Search Initiative](https://make.wordpress.org/core/2013/11/11/the-search-initiative/),
      it’d be super-awesome.
 68. As far as actual structure (and I apologize if I’m getting ahead of myself here)
      I’d guess something like…
 69. > Something built off `post_type_supports` where each post type has a list of‘
      > registered’ metaMeta Meta is a term that refers to the inside workings of a
      > group. For us, this is the team that works on internal WordPress sites like
      > WordCamp Central and Make WordPress. keys — that each can have a number of
      > properties, such as `protected_meta` (which would map to `is_protected_meta()`),`
      > index_for_search`, `input_type` (text, textarea, radio, select, number, email,
      > url, etc), and `input_options` (if the input type is radio or select or the
      > like).
 70. This would be a huge win in extensibility, as the mobile apps and other external
APIs could get more details on the data structures stored in postmeta, and even
offer fields to let users set/update them in the mobile apps.
 71. I see this as paving the cowpaths, and I totally look forward to what comes out
      of it.

 93. I’m very interested in this but otherwise engaged for the next week.
 94. I’ve been working on a number of APIs which allow me to define different fields
for (custom) post types – providing functions for input in forms (adminadmin (
and super admin) and front end UIUI User interface) and for display ( front end
      UI ).
 95. My approach was to start with the APIs required to define and manipulate the
      fields.
The APIs are documented at oik-plugins.com. Search for bw_register_field,
      bw_register_field_for_object_type.
 96. Custom fields are all handled by the bw_effort_box and bw_effort_save_postdata
APIs, which are provided in the oik base pluginPlugin A plugin is a piece of

or can be cost-based plugin from a third-party..
 97. I’ve recently developed a simple admin UI to allow dynamic definition/modification
      of CPT’s, fields and taxonomies ( oik-types plugin ).
 98. What most bothers me is the amount of processing that WordPress coreCore Core
is the set of software required to run WordPress. The Core Development Team builds
WordPress. and plugins perform which are often completely unnecessary. In my
opinion any new APIs should be constructed to allow for deferred implementation
of functionality. Only do something when absolutely necessary.

      for custom fields.
 105. My approach has been simple APIs for registering fields with 3 basic attributes:
name, type, label. Then each type would provide additional attributes, either
during the registration or via filters.
 106. For each field there is an APIAPI An API or Application Programming Interface

and validation starts with common sense but is also extensibleExtensible This
is the ability to add additional functionality to the code. Plugins extend the

 125. Why would the average Joe blogger need advanced custom fields? If WP is moving
towards a more robust CMS-like environment, then comments should be turned into
custom fields (repeater, in ACF) and treated like any other custom fieldCustom
Field Custom Field, also referred to as post meta, is a feature in WordPress.
It allows users to add additional information when writing a post, eg contributors’
names, auth. WordPress stores this information as metadata. Users can display
this meta data by using template tags in their WordPress themes.… this would
      greatly clean up the code..

             * Just pasting an URLURL A specific web address of a website or web page
on the Internet, such as a website’s URL www.wordpress.org failed and
it also failed if I used a proper anchor tagtag A directory in Subversion.
