What’s this new events widget I’m hearing so much about? Where do I find it?

If your WordPress site is running the most up-to-date version of WordPress (4.8 or later), then — good news! — the new Events and News widget is already on your dashboard!
Image shows the new Events and News dashboard widget and its placement on the WordPress dashboard, including an arrow pointing to the pencil icon that allows users to edit the location.

The widget will try to guess your location automatically, but you can also click on a pencil icon and type in the location of your choice. At the bottom of the widget, you’ll find links to the WordPress Meetup landing page, WordCamp Central schedule, and the WordPress.org News blog.

How can I attend an event that I see in the WordPress Events and News widget?

If you see an event on the Events and News widget that you would like to attend, just click on the event name to be taken to a page with more information. You’ll be able to RSVP for the meetup event via meetup.com, or buy a ticket for a WordCamp on the local WordCamp website. If you have any trouble, you can email support@wordcamp.org for more information. And welcome to the WordPress community!

I belong to a WordPress meetup group, and our events don’t show up on the widget! Is it broken?

Only groups that are part of the WordPress meetup chapter program are listed on the widget. If your local group’s events aren’t showing up, it’s possible that it just hasn’t joined the chapter program yet! Joining is free, and requires following a few good-faith rules that were created by a group of volunteer meetup organizers. Information on joining the WordPress meetup program can be found here: https://make.wordpress.org/community/meetups/

My group joined the meetup program, but we don’t use meetup.com. How can our events show up on the widget?

Right now, the widget pulls data only from meetup.com and from WordCamp.org. Most groups in our meetup program that are organized in places where meetup.com isn’t very popular simply cross-post their events to a meetup.com chapter group (we pay the dues) so that their events will show up on the aggregated listings. It’s unlikely that we’ll add additional platforms to our program listing in 2017, but that might change! Subscribe to make.wordpress.org/community to stay up-to-date on developments.
