Report: #WPDiversity Inclusion and Diverse Speaker Workshops February and March 2023

In March 2023, the #WPDiversity group held a Diverse Speaker workshop and an Inclusion workshop for individuals in the AMER/EMEA time zone. Also, the first WordCampWordCamp WordCamps are casual, locally-organized conferences covering everything related to WordPress. They're one of the places where the WordPress community comes together to teach one another what they’ve learned throughout the year and share the joy. Learn more. Asia was held in February 2023, which included a WPDiversity discussion on creating more inclusive spaces and attracting more diverse speakers. 

Diverse Speaker Workshops

How to Own Your Expertise & Start Speaking at WordPress Events AMER/EMEA, March 1, 2023

We held a 2-hour interactive watch party to help boost speaking confidence, which included exercises for speaking topics and real-time feedback. The attendees were supported by speaker mentorsEvent Supporter Event Supporter (formerly Mentor) is someone who has already organised a WordCamp and has time to meet with their assigned mentee every 2 weeks, they talk over where they should be in their timeline, help them to identify their issues, and also identify solutions for their issues. who shared their expertise through the experience.

Organizing Diverse & Inclusive WordPress Events

Organizing Diverse & Inclusive WordPress Events AMER/EMEA, March 16, 2023

We held a watch party workshop to help MeetupMeetup Meetup groups are locally-organized groups that get together for face-to-face events on a regular basis (commonly once a month). Learn more about Meetups in our Meetup Organizer Handbook. and WordCamp organizers, as well as anyone in WordPress who would like to champion this work, create diverse and inclusive events.

WPDiversity Discussion in Asia

WPDiversity discussion at WordCamp Asia Contributor DayContributor Day Contributor Days are standalone days, frequently held before or after WordCamps but they can also happen at any time. In February 2023, the first WordCamp Asia was held, which included a WPDiversity discussion on creating more inclusive spaces and attracting more diverse speakers in WordPress.

Impact

WordCamp Entebbe March 2023 organizer Arthur Kasirye (@thehopemonger) shared with us that thanks to the #WPDiversity speaker workshop that he attended, the camp organizers were able to:

  • Create their first all-women tech panel
  • Hold a gender diversity program of female speakers and student attendees
  • Have more women attend the WordCamp than ever before

  • getting to know other speakers and event organizers
  • workshopping talks with each other and with mentors

  • getting connected with support for speaker travel expenses

There have been so many of these (but most of them not reported in the channel itself) that it’s been hard to keep on tracking. We are creating a new system with a form to make it easier going forward!

Report: #WPDiversity Diverse Speaker Workshops December 2022 and January 2023

In December 2022 and January 2023, the #WPDiversity group held diverse speaker workshops in AMER/EMEA and APAC time zones, respectively. Also Italy held a speaker workshop.

@martatorre asked if we have a safe space program, such as groups that are just for women so they feel safe to talk and discuss technology without fear. Answer: Not officially, but groups are welcome to do this as they choose. There are certain guidelines and recommendations in this thread on WordPress Slack.

Diverse and Inclusive WordPress Events Workshop

March 16, 2023 @ 10:00am–12:00pm PST: Organizing Diverse & Inclusive WordPress Events AMER/EMEA

This workshop is timed for people in Europe, the Middle East, Africa, North America, Central America and South America who speak English to join us. Check your time here. Do you run or attend WordPress events and notice only one type of person is attending? You’d love to see more diversity represented, but people are either not showing up — or they attend once and don’t come back. What can you do to be a good ally to foster, promote, and support diversity and an inclusive space?

This workshop is beneficial for all levels of Diversity and Inclusion knowledge, from complete beginners to experienced event organizers who are already incorporating good practises. This is not just for organizers, but anyone who wants to champion this kind of environment at official WordPress events, now or in the future.

  • 15 people attended the WPDiversity discussion at the Community Team table at WC Asia. This was the largest discussion
  • Discussion was facilitated by @onealtr, @alliennimmons, and @bobdunn-trainer
  • They discussed things such as: Diversity challenges in the past. What is diversity in Asia? How did WCUSWCUS WordCamp US. The US flagship WordCamp event. and WCEUWCEU WordCamp Europe. The European flagship WordCamp event. work on their mix of speakers. What the results were of getting a diverse speaker lineup at WC Asia.

6 – Diversity in Spain project (@martatorre)

Things @martatorre has done recently:

  • offered to speak at WC Barcelona about diversity and what we are doing in this group
  • thinking about doing a brainstorming session with organizers and/or volunteers to see Diversity things they can do for the WordCamp Barcelona community table
  • in the next few weeks, Marta will meet with the WordCamp Granada team to help you make their event more diverse

7 – Diverse Speaker Support Channel “Wins” project (@jillbinder)

Jill talked through her current ideas on how to track speaker wins in the #diverse-speaker-support channel and got feedback from the group

  • @martatorres asked: “Any ideas to find people to join from other countries where there is not much diversity?” We discussed it a little in the meeting and also talked about where to ask the question (on the #community-events channel (during our official discussion hours or any time— and cross-post the link on #diverse-speaker-support so that people know to go answer the question)
