It has been a bit of a slow week in terms of videos, but we expect that to change soon as the high season for WordCamps gets in full swing. Spring is in the air, and big camps in San Diego, Miami, and Nashville are not far behind!

Since “Get Involved” was launched last week, we have already started receiving our first public video submissions! It’s great to see more variety in the videos we publish, and we can’t wait for this to really take off! Uptake so far has been measured, and has sparked quite a bit of discussion on our P2 and during our weekly office hours on IRC. Here’s what’s been going on:

This Week

• Published 11 videos (7 WordCampWordCamp WordCamps are casual, locally-organized conferences covering everything related to WordPress. They're one of the places where the WordPress community comes together to teach one another what they’ve learned throughout the year and share the joy. • For “how-to” videos, we discussed how to format video descriptions, and looking into ways to give proper attribution to uploaders.
• Discussed duplicate content – For now we allow duplicate videos if they come from different sources. We’ll let visitors determine which is best. We will revisit if it looks like things are getting out of hand.
• Along with that, discussed the need to improve the discoverability of up-voted content on the site. Currently star ratings and likes are possible on video pages, but there is no way to effectively promote this content to new visitors, and it is not a ranking factor in site searches.

Next Week

• Finalize how we want to handle “how-to” video descriptions/attributions.
• Continue making improvements to process documentation to improve process of on-boarding new mods.
• Mod the heck out of whatever videos come our way.

• Discussed how to approach and classify WordPress “meetupMeetup Meetup groups are locally-organized groups that get together for face-to-face events on a regular basis (commonly once a month). Learn more about Meetups in our Meetup Organizer Handbook.” submissions, which we think will vary a little a bit, compared to WordCamp presentation videos we’ve seen.
• Published 30 videos.

• Getting ready for some awesome submissions.
• Looking to plan a docs sprint soon, to build out the rest of our documentation on how to become a moderator.
• Publish great WordCamp videos.

This has been a busy week for moderators at WordPress.tv, especially with the approaching availability of a public-facing video uploader. What this means is that soon anyone can submit their best WordPress videos (tutorials, presentations, meetupsMeetup Meetup groups are locally-organized groups that get together for face-to-face events on a regular basis (commonly once a month). Learn more about Meetups in our Meetup Organizer Handbook., etc.) to the benefit of all users. Pretty exciting times, and look for a public announcement next week!

As a result of this big change, our weekly IRC chat was quite active. You can catch up on the conversation here, or stop by our P2 page, where we have also been discussing the impact that publicly uploaded videos has on our workflow as moderators.  Here’s what happened, and what’s coming up:

Last Week:

• Working on revised submission standards to include screencasts, meetups, presentations, and other video content.
• Featured Videos on the WordPress.tv homepage – Mods will now promote videos that really stand out from the latests submissions, and promote them as Featured content on the site.
• The WordCamp TV page now features updated content from recent WordCamps, and better tools for browsing our growing catalog of videos.
• Had our best week to date!  We published 31 videos (over 4 a day!) last week from recent WordCamps (Norway, Phoenix, and Nepal) as well as recently discovered content from past WordCamps.
• Tested the new video uploader interface, ahead of making it available to the public.

Next Week:

• A special announcement!

They're one of the places where the WordPress community comes together to teach one another what they’ve learned throughout the year and share the joy. Learn more. videos (and other announcements) this is a big change, for us as moderators, and for the WordPress community as a whole.  It’s exciting, kind of scary, and could change the face of WordPress.tv forever!  You know, no pressure.  🙂

Last Week

Now with moar moderators!
It’s been a busy week behind-the-scenes here in moderator land. We added a total of 4 new mods (doubling the size of our group) and that has been very refreshing! It has also led to a lot of chatter, as the “senior” moderators have only been here 3 months, and we we’re still working on our process documentation. Suffice it to say, lots of conversation on our P2P2 P2 or O2 is the term people use to refer to the Make WordPress blog. Documentation
We have our new mods documenting their processes as they learn, which is a big help! Hopefully we will have outr process docs filled out soon. We have also have put together a document on Video Submission Standards to share with WC organizers. We’re still editing and adding to it, but hope to get that to the proper subcommittee soon to be a part of the info that is given to future WordCampWordCamp WordCamps are casual, locally-organized conferences covering everything related to WordPress. We’re going retro!
One of the reasons we have WordCamp video moderators right now is because this used to be the job of one busy and over-worked person. That led to some videos falling through the cracks, as you can imagine. Well we’ve done an audit of the site, and found a bunch of unpublished videos from past WordCamps. We will be publishing these to WordCamp.tv next week (and beyond) so if you missed a session from your favorite WordCamp, stay tuned!

It has been a slow week for WordCampWordCamp WordCamps are casual, locally-organized conferences covering everything related to WordPress. They're one of the places where the WordPress community comes together to teach one another what they’ve learned throughout the year and share the joy. Learn more. videos here at WordPress.tv, but it is a temporary lull, as there have already been some great WordCamps to kick off 2013 and we expect to see those videos in the moderator queue soon. So for now the big news is that we have finally set a time/place to meet and discuss the initiatives we’d like to work on for the upcoming year. This is an open meeting, so you are welcome to attend, especially if you would like to join us!
