What we need to know from the community and our deputies (whether you will be attending the Summit or not), is the following:

1. Which of those topics do you think we could sort out in a SlackSlack Slack is a Collaborative Group Chat Platform https://slack.com/. The WordPress community has its own Slack Channel at https://make.wordpress.org/chat/ and/or P2P2 P2 or O2 is the term people use to refer to the Make WordPress blog. It can be found at https://make.wordpress.org discussion before the Summit?
2. Are there any additional topics that you feel are important for us to discuss at the Summit?

While answering those questions, please bear the following from the Summit announcement post in mind:

The main purpose of the summit is to move the project forward before and after the event, with the event being a milestone in a larger set of work.

With this main goal in mind, weโ€™ll touch base with all team reps to figure out which of the topics proposed can be handled beforehand, and come up with topics that would be:

1) of importance to the project as a whole
2) would benefit from cross-team collaboration
3) will leave us in a better position than when we started

Planning for WCEU Contributor Day

Europe is hosting a Contributor DayContributor Day Contributor Days are standalone days, frequently held before or after WordCamps but they can also happen at any time. Here are some ideas I had; please donโ€™t take them as settled, because this is just my first brainstorming pass:

I think it might be good to host an in-person meetupMeetup Meetup groups are locally-organized groups that get together for face-to-face events on a regular basis (commonly once a month). Learn more about Meetups in our Meetup Organizer Handbook. orientation as well as (if possible), an in-person deputyProgram Supporter Community Program Supporters (formerly Deputies) are a team of people worldwide who review WordCamp and Meetup applications, interview lead organizers, and keep things moving at WordCamp Central. Project ideas for experienced contributors:

  • work on the grants program
  • make a list of โ€œactive contributorsโ€ or whatever weโ€™re calling the folks who might get the new contributor badge

Project ideas for new contributors who are involved in a local meetup group:

  • community meetup testimonial videos (multi-lingual)
  • meetup best practices list for: running meetings, finding speakers, etc โ€” essentially in which the best practices list might be created by meetup attendees answering a survey with questions like โ€œwhat topics interest you,โ€ โ€œwhat were your favorite meetupsMeetup Meetup groups are locally-organized groups that get together for face-to-face events on a regular basis (commonly once a month). Learn more about Meetups in our Meetup Organizer Handbook. last year,โ€ โ€œwhat meeting times/dates are best for youโ€ โ€” essentially our year-end survey, with some additions?

New contributors who are 100% new to community and have no local WP group:

  • attend an in-person meetup organizer orientation
  • compile a list of local diversity in tech groups to help make a resource for local organizers who want to recruit diverse speaker lineups
  • testing the speaker application pluginPlugin A plugin is a piece of software containing a group of functions that can be added to a WordPress website. They can extend functionality or add new features to your WordPress websites. WordPress plugins are written in the PHP programming language and integrate seamlessly with WordPress. These can be free in the WordPress.org Plugin Directory https://wordpress.org/plugins/ or can be cost-based plugin from a third-party.? maybe?

Like I said, this is totally just a first pass. ๐Ÿ™‚ Please please please suggest project/task ideas in the comments below!

The new WordCamp base theme: CampSite 2017

In our last post on the current status of the new WordCampWordCamp WordCamps are casual, locally-organized conferences covering everything related to WordPress. They're one of the places where the WordPress community comes together to teach one another what theyโ€™ve learned throughout the year and share the joy. Learn more. base theme, we got some great feedback on how to improve the theme even further. The feedback has been implemented and the new theme is ready for review.

โ€œDay ofโ€ page template

One of the ideas from the feedback we wanted to implement was the โ€œday ofโ€ template. This is a page template with some additional widgetWidget A WordPress Widget is a small block that performs a specific function. You can add these widgets in sidebars also known as widget-ready areas on your web page. WordPress widgets were originally created to provide a simple and easy-to-use way of giving design and structure control of the WordPress theme to the user. areas. They can be used to arrange a page, that can be used on the day of the WordCamp. Things you might want to have on homepage on that day: the schedule, directions, social media stream, information about the after party, etc. As in the widget areas, you can use shortcodes in text widgets, itโ€™s very easy to dynamically setup such a page.

Example of the day of template

This is an example on how this could look like. The width of the widget areas can be adjusted using CSSCSS CSS is an acronym for cascading style sheets. This is what controls the design or look and feel of a site..

A11yAccessibility Accessibility (commonly shortened to a11y) refers to the design of products, devices, services, or environments for people with disabilities. The concept of accessible design ensures both โ€œdirect accessโ€ (i.e. unassisted) and โ€œindirect accessโ€ meaning compatibility with a personโ€™s assistive technology (for example, computer screen readers). (https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Accessibility)

As the new theme is based on the latest version of Underscores, it already comes with a lot of a11y improvements. But themes like TwentySeventeen even go one step further. So, for the two navigations we have on the site, we implemented the improvements from TwentySeventeen (like including a โ€œdropdown-toggleโ€ button next to sub menus).

Ready to review

We believe, that the new theme is ready to go live on WordCamp.org, so we would like to invite you, to review the current codebase on Github.

The theme itself comes with no style (except for some basic CSS from Underscores). For WordCamp Europe, we just finished our complementary style guide we presented in our first blog post and we will publish it in the next days for any WordCamp to use.
