Community Team Reps: Submit your Votes

In November, the Community team opened up nominations for new Community team reps for 2021. The poll is now open and ready for your vote!

What are team reps?

In the WordPress open sourceOpen Source Open Source denotes software for which the original source code is made freely available and may be redistributed and modified. Open Source **must be** delivered via a licensing model, see GPL. project, each team has one or two (or more!) representatives, abbreviated as “reps”. On the Community team, we ask reps to commit to the role for a full calendar year.

Team reps are responsible for communicating on behalf of the group to the other contributor groups via weekly updates, as well as occasional chats. 

As a reminder, it is not called “team lead” for a reason. While the people elected as team reps will generally come from the pool of folks that people think of as experienced leaders, the team repTeam Rep A Team Rep is a person who represents the Make WordPress team to the rest of the project, make sure issues are raised and addressed as needed, and coordinates cross-team efforts. role is designed to change hands regularly.

This role does have a time commitment attached to it, at least one hour a week. The main tasks include:

  • Writing the agenda for the biweekly chat (example)
  • Run the chat (example)
  • Write the recap and post it in Updates
  • Keep an eye on the moving parts of the team and provide reports for quarterly updates (example).

Over the year, the team can decide to add one or two people to help, depending on how much work there is. For now, the Community team would like to elect two team reps for 2021. 

Where can I vote?

You can vote in the public poll here. You can vote for up to two people at the same time, but once you have submitted your vote you won’t be able to vote again.

This poll will remain open until Tuesday, December 22, after which team reps will be selected based on the votes received.

Community Team Rep Nominations for 2021

At the end of last year, @camikaos and myself (@mariaojob) were voted in as reps for 2020. It has been an insightful & fulfilling experience, and we are happy to pass the baton on to the next team reps for 2021 💯.

This post kicks off the election process with nominations to replace @camikaos and myself (@mariaojob) as Community Team Reps.

How Community Team Rep elections work

Following our election process last year, the Community team is planning on these key steps: 

  1. Call for Nominations: Anyone can nominate a Community team rep! The deadline is Wednesday, November 25.
  2. Voting for Team Reps: We will open a poll for voting on Tuesday, December 1. The poll will stay open for three weeks, and close on Tuesday, December 22. We will then be able to announce our new team reps before the end of 2020!

If you would like to nominate someone in private, please reach out to @mariaojob, @camikaos, or @angelasjin. 

If you get nominated, you do not have to say yes! We will only add people who respond positively to a nomination to the poll, so feel free to decline a nomination if you don’t feel like this is the right fit for any reason.

Community Team Reps for 2020

It’s been almost three years since we elected team reps for the Community Team. @hlashbrooke and I have been serving since January 2017, way longer than usually team reps do… so it’s time to have a new election!

The Role

In the WordPress open sourceOpen Source Open Source denotes software for which the original source code is made freely available and may be redistributed and modified. Open Source **must be** delivered via a licensing model, see GPL. project, each team has one or two (or more!) representatives, abbreviated in reps. The role goes way back to 2012, for the historians out there 🙂

Initially, it was a six months tenure, but most reps end up doing this for at least a year.

Folks who serve as “team repTeam Rep A Team Rep is a person who represents the Make WordPress team to the rest of the project, make sure issues are raised and addressed as needed, and coordinates cross-team efforts.” are responsible for communicating on behalf of the group to the other contributor groups via weekly updates, as well as occasional chats and such. 

It is not called “team lead” for a reason. While the people elected as team reps will generally come from the pool of folks that people think of as experienced leaders, remember that the team rep role is designed to change hands regularly.

This role has a time commitment attached to it. Not a huge amount, but in my experience, it’s at least one hour a week.

Here are the main tasks:

  • Writing the agenda for the biweekly chat
  • Run the chat
  • Write the recap and post it in Updates
  • Keep an eye on the moving parts of the team to be able to report for quarterly updates (example).

Over the year, the team might decide to add one or two people to help: some teams have up to five, six people, depending on how much work there is. For now, let’s get us two new reps!

How the election works

We nominate people in the comments of this post. Self-nominations are welcome. The deadline is Sunday, December 22.

After that, we will open a poll for voting. It will stay open for four weeks, until Sunday, January 21 2020.

Team Rep Change

@andrea_r is going to be stepping back from volunteering for a while for personal reasons, so @sabreuse has graciously volunteered to fill her shoes re community outreach team. We’re overdue for a take-stock-make-plans as a number of projects that were parceled out over the past couple of months didn’t wind up going anywhere, and I’ve not been very wrangly in public. Will start being more official and consistent with posts about what’s up. In the meantime, welcome, Amy!

Team Rep Election Results

Andrea Middleton and Aaron Jorbin. Congrats! The term starts with the new year, so I’ll be in touch before then to make sure everyone is on the same page regarding expectations.

17 people voted. You may remember I asked a couple of other questions on the survey to make sure voters were really the people to be represented. Here are the results of those questions, if anyone is interested.

  • 9 – I am an active member of the events team, and am currently participating in one of the subcommittee projects.

Team Reps

It’s time to vote for team reps to communicate on behalf of the group to the other contributor groups via weekly updates, as well as occasional chats and such. If you haven’t seen the spiel on one of the other team blogs about how team reps/voting/terms work, the longer explanation is after the jump.

This group is an odd one because it hasn’t really started yet. Other groups are either in their second round of elections, or had an appointed acting rep(s) while the group ramped up. I and Andrea Rennick are listed as acting reps on the updates blog but since we’re deliberately not starting any projects until after the December holidays, there a) aren’t really official contributors yet. Still, we could at least get feedback/votes of confidence from potential contributors. Ideally Andrea Rennick and I would take the first term to get things up and running, then rotate ourselves out so other contributors can step up, but you are free to vote for anyone you think is appropriate.

Note: It should be people who want the responsibility. Anyone interested in being a team repTeam Rep A Team Rep is a person who represents the Make WordPress team to the rest of the project, make sure issues are raised and addressed as needed, and coordinates cross-team efforts. should leave a comment saying as much so people know who they can/should vote for. Voting is open until December 15, and results will be posted here once voting closes.

Team Reps

When we elected team reps last time around, the events contributor group didn’t exist yet. Groups that formed since the last elections had a team repTeam Rep A Team Rep is a person who represents the Make WordPress team to the rest of the project, make sure issues are raised and addressed as needed, and coordinates cross-team efforts. appointed for them until such time as there were enough group members to vote. You’ve made it, and it’s time to vote for your team reps!

There will be two event team reps. The hope for the role is that every six months when we vote, a new person will get tagged in to learn the responsibilities over the first half of the term, and then take over in the second half while the ‘elder’ steps back into the backup role. Rinse, wash, repeat. This way, we continually invest in the process of growing new community leaders. (This means please vote for two names, not just the same one twice.)

The team rep role is responsible for posting weekly updates to the team reps blog, and participating in team rep chats as needed. Note that this role is mostly administrative; it’s not a role that carries solo decision-making power. More detailed information about the team reps role is available after the jump.
