Announcement: Team Representative Change for the Community Team in 2022

Earlier this year, @samsuresh and I (@harishanker) were selected as Community Team representatives for 2022. Personally, it has been an exciting opportunity working as the Team Representative for the community team so far – and working with Sam has been nothing short of a joy! Together, we were able to make great progress – we helped finalize the community team goals for the year, we hosted some exciting team chats and trainings, and the team also had a blast at the Contributor day in WCEU.

I am taking a three-month sabbatical from work, starting mid-June. During this time, I will not be available to contribute full time to the community team, as I will be mostly away from the keyboard. I feel that it is unfair that I stay as team repTeam Rep A Team Rep is a person who represents the Make WordPress team to the rest of the project, make sure issues are raised and addressed as needed, and coordinates cross-team efforts. since I will not be contributing full-time. Hence, I have taken the difficult decision to step down as a team representative. I would also like to thank all our community members for your unconditional support for the community team so far – I will always be grateful to you, for all that you do for our community!

With that said, given our exciting plans for 2022, the team needs still need another representative to support all our exciting plans for the year.

I am excited to announce that Megan Rose (@megabyterose) will be the Community Team representative for the rest of 2022, along with @samsuresh!

Sam and I are excited to welcome Megan – she has done an excellent job supporting the community team over the past year, and we are certain that she will do a fantastic job as a team representative.

Megan is an Ohio-based web developer and community builder. She is a WordPress Community DeputyProgram Supporter Community Program Supporters (formerly Deputies) are a team of people worldwide who review WordCamp and Meetup applications, interview lead organizers, and keep things moving at WordCamp Central. Find more about program supporters in our Program Supporter Handbook. and the Expert Community Support Lead at Codeable. When not at a computer, Megan enjoys competitive swimming, reading, and spending time with her pets.

As a reminder, it is not called “team lead” for a reason. While the people elected as team reps will generally come from the pool of folks that people think of as experienced leaders, the team rep role is designed to change hands regularly.

Announcement: Team Representatives for 2022

New year means new Team Representatives for the Community Team! We had an open call for nominations and vote least year, whose results I am eager to share.

Last year @kcristiano and myself acted as a reps for the team – it was a though year for all of us, but we are so grateful for all the contributions everyone made towards the team. Thank you!

But onto this year and the announcement…

The Community Team Representatives for 2022 are Sam Suresh (@samsuresh) and Hari Shanker (@harishanker). Both are big hearted individuals and active community contributors. With Kevin, we are more than happy to pass the torch to them!

Sam Suresh

A technology instructor from Kuala Lumpur first discovered WordPress in 2010. Since then Sam has joined the WordPress project as a meetupMeetup Meetup groups are locally-organized groups that get together for face-to-face events on a regular basis (commonly once a month). They're one of the places where the WordPress community comes together to teach one another what they’ve learned throughout the year and share the joy. Learn more. organizer. Sam is the CEO of ModernLMS and co-founded MU DOT MY PLT.  Sam likes to challenge himself with new adventures and he completed his 5 KM open water swimming in 2018!

Hari Shanker

 A resident of Kochi, India. WordPress has been an integral part of Hari’s life since 2006, when he first discovered it as a college student. His passion for WordPress led him to a fledgling career around the software, and eventually ushered him into the community. After contributing to the Indian WordPress community as a Meetup and a WordCamp organizer for over four years, Hari joined the team of Sponsored Community DeputiesProgram Supporter Community Program Supporters (formerly Deputies) are a team of people worldwide who review WordCamp and Meetup applications, interview lead organizers, and keep things moving at WordCamp Central. Find more about program supporters in our Program Supporter Handbook. at Automattic in 2020 April, and has been contributing full-time to the Global WordPress Community Team, ever since. As a Community Team representative, Hari aims to collaborate with team members to work on impactful programs and projects while maintaining transparency and openness.

Community Team Reps 2022: Submit your Votes

In October, the Community team opened up nominations for new Community team reps for 2022. A little later than intended, the poll is now open and ready for your vote!

Where can I vote?

You can vote in the public poll here. You can vote for up to two people at the same time, but once you have submitted your vote you won’t be able to vote again.

This poll will remain open until 2021-11-29, after which team reps will be selected based on the votes received.

Community Team Rep Nominations for 2022

It is time to start the process to select new Community Team reps for 2022 to replace @kcristiano and myself.

On the Community team, we have historically had two reps who are asked to commit to the role for a full calendar year.

Team reps are responsible for communicating on behalf of the group to the other contributor groups via weekly updates, as well as occasional chats. 

As a reminder, it is not called “team lead” for a reason. While the people elected as team reps will generally come from the pool of folks that people think of as experienced leaders, the team repTeam Rep A Team Rep is a person who represents the Make WordPress team to the rest of the project, make sure issues are raised and addressed as needed, and coordinates cross-team efforts. role is designed to change hands regularly.

This role does have a time commitment attached to it, at least one hour a week. The main tasks include:

How Community Team Rep elections work

Following our election process last year, the Community team is planning on these key steps: 

  1. Call for Nominations: Anyone can nominate a Community team rep! The deadline is 2021-10-29.
  2. Voting for Team Reps: We will open a poll for voting on 2021-11-03. The poll will stay open for three weeks, and close on 2021-11-24. We will then be able to announce our new team reps before the end of 2021!

Community Team Rep Nominations for 2021

At the end of last year, @camikaos and myself (@mariaojob) were voted in as reps for 2020. It has been an insightful & fulfilling experience, and we are happy to pass the baton on to the next team reps for 2021 💯.

Community Team Reps for 2020

It’s been almost three years since we elected team reps for the Community Team. @hlashbrooke and I have been serving since January 2017, way longer than usually team reps do… so it’s time to have a new election!

The Role

Open Source **must be** delivered via a licensing model, see GPL. project, each team has one or two (or more!) representatives, abbreviated in reps. The role goes way back to 2012, for the historians out there 🙂

Initially, it was a six months tenure, but most reps end up doing this for at least a year.

Folks who serve as “team repTeam Rep A Team Rep is a person who represents the Make WordPress team to the rest of the project, make sure issues are raised and addressed as needed, and coordinates cross-team efforts.” are responsible for communicating on behalf of the group to the other contributor groups via weekly updates, as well as occasional chats and such. 

It is not called “team lead” for a reason. While the people elected as team reps will generally come from the pool of folks that people think of as experienced leaders, remember that the team rep role is designed to change hands regularly.

This role has a time commitment attached to it. Not a huge amount, but in my experience, it’s at least one hour a week.

Here are the main tasks:

  • Writing the agenda for the biweekly chat
  • Run the chat
  • Write the recap and post it in Updates
  • Keep an eye on the moving parts of the team to be able to report for quarterly updates (example).

Over the year, the team might decide to add one or two people to help: some teams have up to five, six people, depending on how much work there is. For now, let’s get us two new reps!

How the election works

We nominate people in the comments of this post. Self-nominations are welcome. The deadline is Sunday, December 22.

After that, we will open a poll for voting. It will stay open for four weeks, until Sunday, January 21 2020.

Team Rep Change

@andrea_r is going to be stepping back from volunteering for a while for personal reasons, so @sabreuse has graciously volunteered to fill her shoes re community outreach team. We’re overdue for a take-stock-make-plans as a number of projects that were parceled out over the past couple of months didn’t wind up going anywhere, and I’ve not been very wrangly in public. Will start being more official and consistent with posts about what’s up. In the meantime, welcome, Amy!

17 people voted. You may remember I asked a couple of other questions on the survey to make sure voters were really the people to be represented. Here are the results of those questions, if anyone is interested.
