# 󠀁[2026 Big Picture Goals: Our Focus on Meetups](https://make.wordpress.org/community/2026/01/28/2026-big-picture-goals-our-focus-on-meetups/)󠁿

Mary just published the [2026 Big Picture Goals](https://make.wordpress.org/project/2026/01/23/big-picture-goals-for-2026/)
for the project, and we wanted to share what this means specifically for our Community
Team work this year. Education-related goals will be discussed in their own context,
so this post focuses on **the major priority that affects us directly: revamping
meetupsMeetup Meetup groups are locally-organized groups that get together for face-
to-face events on a regular basis (commonly once a month). Learn more about Meetups
in our [Meetup Organizer Handbook](https://make.wordpress.org/community/handbook/meetup-organizer/).**.

## **Why meetups matter more than ever**

Meetups are explicitly called out as **the primary front door to the WordPress community**.
With WordPress Credits and Campus Connect scaling quickly, we’re going to see more
new people looking to get involved. Meetups need to be ready to welcome them and,
critically, turn that curiosity into active participation.

As the post highlights:

> “Meetups are where people build confidence, relationships, and momentum. When
> they work well, they turn curiosity into commitment.”

## **Building on what works**

Many meetups are already doing great work bringing people together. In 2026, we
want to **expand and strengthen** what’s working by adding more opportunities for
active participation alongside the presentations and social gatherings that meetups
already do well. This means:

 * **Adding issue-focused sessions** where attendees work together on real WordPress
   problems
 * **Expanding hands-on learning** opportunities tied to actual WordPress needs (
   complementing presentations with practice)
 * **Providing clear next steps** that move people from meetupMeetup Meetup groups

basis (commonly once a month). Learn more about Meetups in our [Meetup Organizer Handbook](https://make.wordpress.org/community/handbook/meetup-organizer/).
participation into contribution on Make teams
 * **Exploring new topics together**: As AI tools become more common, meetups are
natural spaces where people can learn together how these tools fit into WordPress
   workflows

## **What we need to do**

This evolution requires support from us as a team. Here’s what we think our priorities
should be for Q1 and beyond:

### **Immediate actions (Q1-Q2 2026)**

 1. **Review and strengthen current meetup resources**
 2. * Audit the Meetup Organizer Handbook to ensure it supports this broader approach
     * Identify what additional guidance organizers need for running hands-on, issue-
       focused sessions
 3. **Connect with our meetup organizer community**
 4. * Review all existing meetup groups to understand current activity levels
     * Reach out to organizers to share these goals, learn about their challenges,
       and offer support
     * Contact groups that haven’t met recently to explore options: finding new co-
organizers, revitalizing the group, or respectfully closing inactive chapters
 5. **Create practical resources for organizers**
 6. * Templates for hands-on session formats and issue-focused meetups
     * Suggested workflows for connecting meetup attendees to Make teams
     * Sample “next steps” pathways for different skill levels
     * Guidance on facilitating learning sessions about emerging topics like AI tools
       in WordPress
 7. **Highlight and share what’s working**
 8. * Identify meetups already running successful hands-on or contribution-focused
       sessions
     * Create ways to showcase these examples to inspire other organizers and mentorsEvent
Supporter Event Supporter (formerly Mentor) is someone who has already organised
a WordCamp and has time to meet with their assigned mentee every 2 weeks, they
talk over where they should be in their timeline, help them to identify their
issues, and also identify solutions for their issues.
     * Develop a system for celebrating and amplifying innovative meetup formats

### **Mid-term work (Q2-Q3 2026)**

 5. **Enhance organizer training and onboarding**
 6. * Update orientation materials to include guidance on active participation formats
      * Include resources on mentoring new contributors who attend meetups
 7. **Strengthen the meetup-to-contribution pipeline**
 8. * Work with Make team reps to ensure they have clear onboarding for meetup attendees
      * Create better visibility of “good first issues” that meetup groups can tackle
        together
 9. **Improve coordination with Education programs**
 10. * Establish clear pathways for WordPress Credits and Campus Connect participants
        to find local meetups
      * Provide organizers with context on what these program participants will need

### **Success metrics**

We should be tracking:

 * Number of meetups incorporating hands-on/contribution-focused sessions
 * Growth in meetup activity and attendance
 * Organizer feedback on new resources and guidance
 * Success stories we can share with the broader community (meetup attendees who
became contributors, innovative session formats, community impact examples)

## **How you can help**

This is a team effort. We’d love to hear from you:

 * **Organizers**: What would help you add more hands-on, contribution-focused elements
to your meetups? What’s working well right now that we should amplify?
 * **Program and event supporters**: How can we better support organizers as they
   expand their meetup offerings?
 * **Everyone**: What examples have you seen of meetups that successfully move people
into contribution? Which groups should we be highlighting?

Drop your thoughts in the comments or pingPing The act of sending a very small amount
of data to an end point. Ping is used in computer science to illicit a response
from a target server to test it’s connection. Ping is also a term used by Slack
users to @ someone or send them a direct message (DM). Users might say something
along the lines of “Ping me when the meeting starts.” us on SlackSlack Slack is

WordPress community has its own Slack Channel at [https://make.wordpress.org/chat/](https://make.wordpress.org/chat/)(
[#community-team](https://wordpress.slack.com/archives/C037W5S7X)). If you are able
and willing to help with specific tasks (updating handbook content, creating templates,
coordinating with Make teams, or reaching out to organizers) let us know.

## **Next steps**

We’ll be scheduling a team discussion in the next couple of weeks to break down
these priorities and assign ownership. In the meantime, if you’re organizing or
mentoring meetups, start thinking about what one hands-on session could look like
in your community, or share an example of something great that’s already happening.

2026 is about momentum. Meetups are where that momentum begins. Let’s make sure
we’re ready to support, celebrate, and grow together.

# 󠀁[Announcing the 2023 Community Team Goals](https://make.wordpress.org/community/2023/05/03/announcing-the-2023-community-team-goals/)󠁿

Based on feedback and conversation, we have narrowed down the submitted ideas into
three goals for 2023.

 1. Create resources to improve our Contributor Event experience.
 2. Expand our contributor training and support.
 3. Improve processes and workflows within the community team to work more efficiently,
    effectively, and transparently together.

Individual projects can be found on the [Community team Trello board](https://trello.com/b/xqiBcXo1/community-team-2023-goals)
and you are welcome to claim one as  your own. Many of those projects fall under
these three areas of focus.

If there is a particular goal you are interested in working on, but there isn’t
currently a project that fits you, let the team know. We will work together to find
a way that you can contribute toward that goal.

If you have any questions or concerns about these goals, share them. We’re happy
to discuss it with you.

# 󠀁[Community Team Goals for 2023: Call for Suggestions](https://make.wordpress.org/community/2023/01/23/community-team-goals-for-2023-call-for-suggestions/)󠁿

It’s time to add your voice to what you’d like to see the Community Team accomplish
as a group for 2023. As you can see in brainstorming posts from [2021](https://make.wordpress.org/community/2020/11/16/community-team-goals-for-2021-share-your-suggestions/),
[2020](https://make.wordpress.org/community/2020/01/15/community-team-goals-for-2020-suggestions-wanted/),
[2018](https://make.wordpress.org/community/2018/01/16/2018-goals-for-the-global-community-team-suggestions-time/),
[2017](https://make.wordpress.org/community/2017/01/02/2017-goals/), and [2016](https://make.wordpress.org/community/2015/12/22/2016-goals/),
every year we collected and shortlisted a long list of goals for our team.

This is an open thread for suggestions about what this team ought to focus on and/
or try to accomplish this year. It’s ok to include:

 * Ideas that have already been suggested in the past
 * Propose things that maybe no one has ever mentioned.

Once the group has had time to make suggestions, we’ll recruit someone to summarize
all the suggestions ([example](https://make.wordpress.org/community/2017/02/08/summary-community-team-2017-goals/)),
and then discuss as a group, to set priorities. **We’ll close comments on February
2.**

**Because of the short time frame,** we’re looking at splitting the goal planning
into two phase. We’d like to plan an initial set of goals for the first half of
2023 and then open the conversation again in May for the second half of the year.
That doesn’t mean we can’t have overarching goals for all of to 2023. It simply
opens our thinking to short term initiatives while also making sure that we are
tracking our progress throughout a long and busy year.

Consider these as you think through your suggestions:

 * What would do you think the global community teamGlobal Community Team A group
of community organizers and contributors who collaborate on local events about
WordPress — monthly WordPress meetups and/or annual conferences called WordCamps.
   should or could work on?
 * What would help further our mission to connect WordPress enthusiasts?
 * What would inspire people to do more with WordPress?
 * How can we encourage contribution to the WordPress open sourceOpen Source Open

and may be redistributed and modified. Open Source **must be** delivered via

# 󠀁[Proposal: [Experiment] Adopt Standardised Team-wide Project Management Tools – already utilised by other Make Teams for a Quarter.](https://make.wordpress.org/community/2023/01/19/proposal-adopt-github-for-team-projects/)󠁿

This proposal is focused towards improving our project management and goal and progress
tracking by using the same transparent tools that other Make Teams already utilise.

 1. [Background and Skeleton](https://make.wordpress.org/community/2023/01/19/proposal-adopt-github-for-team-projects/#background-and-skeleton)
 2. [Benefits of adopting Github:](https://make.wordpress.org/community/2023/01/19/proposal-adopt-github-for-team-projects/#benefits-of-adopting-github)

 4. [Proposal Adoption Feedback Form](https://make.wordpress.org/community/2023/01/19/proposal-adopt-github-for-team-projects/#proposal-adoption-feedback-form)

### Background and Skeleton

Currently we have many spreadsheets, trelloTrello Project management system using
the concepts of boards and cards to organize tasks in a sane way. This is what the
make.wordpress.com/marketing team uses for example: [https://trello.com/b/8UGHVBu8/wp-marketing.](https://trello.com/b/8UGHVBu8/wp-marketing)
boards, slackSlack Slack is a Collaborative Group Chat Platform [https://slack.com/](https://slack.com/).
The WordPress community has its own Slack Channel at [https://make.wordpress.org/chat/](https://make.wordpress.org/chat/)
groups and many other disparate ways of working on our various ongoing projects
outside of helpscout.

From my personal experience having returned as a Community DeputyProgram Supporter
Community Program Supporters (formerly Deputies) are a team of people worldwide
who review WordCamp and Meetup applications, interview lead organizers, and keep
things moving at WordCamp Central. Find more about program supporters in our [Program Supporter Handbook](https://make.wordpress.org/community/handbook/community-deputy/).
and now as Community Team RepTeam Rep A Team Rep is a person who represents the
Make WordPress team to the rest of the project, make sure issues are raised and
addressed as needed, and coordinates cross-team efforts., I believe that the first
action – before further planning and goals discussions – is to standardise and fully
utilize the power of the tools already available to us. We can benefit by learning
from other teams that already consistently use these tools.

   etc.

…and possibly this demo of a [Make Community Team →](https://github.com/orgs/WordPress/teams/make-community-team)

### Benefits of adopting GithubGitHub GitHub is a website that offers online implementation of git repositories that can easily be shared, copied and modified by other developers. Public repositories are free to host, private repositories require a paid subscription. GitHub introduced the concept of the ‘pull request’ where code changes done in branches by contributors can be reviewed and discussed before being merged by the repository owner. 󠀁[https://github.com/](https://github.com/)󠁿:

**GitHub is a powerful and widely-used platform for project management and issue
tracking already in full use by [@WordPress](https://github.com/WordPress). **

Adopting GitHub for these purposes within the Community Team would bring a number
of benefits, including:

 1. **Improved collaboration and communication**: GitHub provides a central location
for team members to access and work on project tasks and issues, as well as a **
built-in system for commenting, tracking progress, and assigning tasks.** This
makes it easy for team members to stay informed about the progress of a project
and to contribute to it, even when working remotely.
 2. **Increased transparency and accountability**: With GitHub, team members can easily
see the progress of tasks and issues, as well as who is responsible for them. This
increased transparency helps to ensure that everyone is on the same page and that
tasks and issues are not falling through the cracks.
 3. **Better organization and prioritization**: GitHub provides a number of tools for
o**rganizing and prioritizing tasks and issues, such as labels, milestones, and
project boards.** These tools make it easy for team members to understand what
needs to be done and when, and to focus their efforts on the most important tasks.
 4. **Standardisation**: By adopting GitHub for project management and issue tracking,**
the Community Team will standardize our way of working**, making it easier for
new team members to get up to speed and **enabling more effective cross-team collaboration**.
This standardization also makes it easier for Community Team members to** track
progress, identify issues and make data-driven decisions.**

Overall, adopting GitHub for project management and issue tracking would bring improved
collaboration, increased transparency, better organization, and standardization,
ultimately leading to a more efficient and effective team.

### Next Steps, the Experiment:

**_I propose we adopt these tooling methods similar to other make teams, and experiment
with its usage for a month, having monthly meetings reviewing its success or not,
and gathering data for more data-driven decision making _**

**If after the first Quarter the consensus is that this does not suit our team,
we will revert back to initial project and tracking practices and explore more.**

 * We already have a place-holder team and projects board on the WordPress Github
   org
    - **Team**: [https://github.com/orgs/WordPress/teams/make-community-team](https://github.com/orgs/WordPress/teams/make-community-team)
    - **Project**: [https://github.com/orgs/WordPress/projects/66/views/1](https://github.com/orgs/WordPress/projects/66/views/1)
    - This will **help get everyone onboard** should we move this way.and as well
as **improve decisions **about how we will use the tool and the **decisions
we make** by using this system.

Update: Other teams using github already were kind enough to share some of the resources
they use and workflows which would be extremely beneficial should we move forward
with this adoption standard.

 *  **How Learn uses Github:**

# 󠀁[Community Team 2022 Goals Recap](https://make.wordpress.org/community/2022/12/20/community-team-2022-goals-recap/)󠁿

Throughout 2022, the Community Team has been focused on a [wide range of goals.](https://make.wordpress.org/community/2022/03/03/2022-community-team-goals-summary/)
These goals encompassed improvements to our programs and projects, creating new
educational content, and improved outreach and coordination across the various sub-
groups of the team.

 1. Support the return of in-person events
 2. Check-in and reactivate WordPress MeetupMeetup Meetup groups are locally-organized

## Return of In-Person Events

Throughout 2022, the Community Team has been discussing how to safely return to
in-person events. In January, the team published [updated guidelines for in-person events](https://make.wordpress.org/community/2022/01/24/updated-guidelines-for-in-person-wordcamps-and-meetups-2022/).
The [WordCamp Handbook](https://make.wordpress.org/community/handbook/wordcamp-organizer/2022-returning-to-in-person-wordcamps/)
and [Meetup Handbook](https://make.wordpress.org/community/handbook/meetup-organizer/2022-returning-to-in-person-wordpress-meetups/)
are up-to-date with the decisions from the ongoing discussion.

We are also supporting event organizers by having open [discussions about the challenges](https://make.wordpress.org/community/2022/04/11/return-to-in-person-events-share-your-challenges/)
and [hopes for the future](https://make.wordpress.org/community/2022/03/23/return-to-events-blue-sky-thinking/)
with returning to in-person events.

In 2022, we had **22 in-person WordCamps**, along with 3 which were online. At the
moment, we have **12 WordCamps on the schedule**, plus our in-person [Community Summit](https://communitysummit.wordcamp.org/2023/).
16 more WordCamps are in pre-planning stages and 7 are pending review from the Community

## Community Engagement

### Community Summit

The 2023 WordPress Community Summit was announced for August 22-23 in National Harbor,
DC, UAS. This event will bring together WordPress contributors, team leads, and
diverse community voices to discuss the challenges and clarify the vision for WordPress
in the years ahead.

[Suggest a Community Summit topic](https://make.wordpress.org/community/2022/12/08/suggest-topics-for-the-2023-wordpress-community-summit/)
by January 16, 2023! 📝

## Other Activities

Another goal mentioned in our 2022 goals announcement post was to implement a revised
Camera Kit program in Europe, which will be [available beginning in January 2023](https://make.wordpress.org/community/2022/11/17/announcement-new-european-camera-kits/)!
Shout out to [@sippis](https://profiles.wordpress.org/sippis/) for the hard work
on this. 💪

With a [new Contributor Handbook](https://make.wordpress.org/handbook/), a new [Community Code of Conduct](https://make.wordpress.org/handbook/community-code-of-conduct/)
was introduced in 2022! In support of the new code of conductCode of Conduct “A
code of conduct is a set of rules outlining the norms, rules, and responsibilities
or proper practices of an individual party.” - [Wikipedia](https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Code_of_conduct),
incident response training was made available to anyone interested in learning more.
Additionally, [a new cohort](https://make.wordpress.org/updates/2022/05/26/announcement-incident-response-training/)
led by [@angelasjin](https://profiles.wordpress.org/angelasjin/) and [@juliarosia](https://profiles.wordpress.org/juliarosia/)
was announced and run, creating the WordPress community’s first Incident Response
team.

## Looking Towards 2023

There were so many great ideas submitted for 2022 which I’d like to highlight for
us to keep in mind when we move into the new year:

 * Organize regular Deputy and MentorEvent Supporter Event Supporter (formerly Mentor)

assigned mentee every 2 weeks, they talk over where they should be in their timeline,
help them to identify their issues, and also identify solutions for their issues.
roundtables on a monthly basis with a focus on learning.
 * Finalize and launch the Code of Conduct (CoCCode of Conduct “A code of conduct
is a set of rules outlining the norms, rules, and responsibilities or proper
practices of an individual party.” - [Wikipedia](https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Code_of_conduct))
   Training for Deputies.
 * Identify gaps and start working on revamping our existing contributor training,
with a goal of eventually moving them to Learn.WordPress.orgWordPress.org The
community site where WordPress code is created and shared by the users. This
is where you can download the source code for WordPress core, plugins and themes
as well as the central location for community conversations and organization.
 * Formalize the contributor path for the Community Team and make community members
aware of leadership and growth opportunities.
 * Plan regular Community Organizer check-ins.

The following goals are ongoing and should be continued:

 * Encourage community organizers in different locales to apply as Mentors or Deputies.
 * Find ways to make sure that community organizers stay updated.
 * Explore new event formats.

# 󠀁[Community Team Goals 2022: Open Discussion Sessions](https://make.wordpress.org/community/2022/02/02/community-team-goals-2022-open-discussion-sessions/)󠁿

Toward the end of last year, the Community Team opened a[ call for suggestions](https://make.wordpress.org/community/2021/11/05/2022-goals-for-the-community-team-suggestions-invited/)
for the 2022 Community team goals. As you can see [from the comments on that post](https://make.wordpress.org/community/2021/11/05/2022-goals-for-the-community-team-suggestions-invited/#comments),
lots of great suggestions were made!

2022 is a unique year for the Community Team due to the ongoing challenges posed
by the COVID-19 pandemic, which seems to have no end! Last year, the team was lucky
enough to have some excellent suggested goals, but due to the challenging nature
of the year, we were not able to get to most of them. **With that in mind, in 2022,
let us try to finalize a small list of high-impact goals that will support and empower
our resilient community. **As team representatives, [@samsuresh](https://profiles.wordpress.org/samsuresh/)
and I are going to attempt a process to gather more information around suggested
goals and finalize high-impact action items for 2022, in a collaborative way.

At this time, all suggested goals have been added to a public[ Community Team 2022 Goals Trello board](https://trello.com/b/Mlw6RPU0/community-team-2022-goals)
as separate cards. Everyone is invited to open cards and add additional detail to
the goal, such as (but not limited to):

 * What makes the goal important/what kind of impact the goal will have if met
 * What kind of resources the team would need to achieve the goal
 * What historical context might be important to understanding the goal
 * Whether there are any perceived barriers
 * Whether the goal is both measurable and achievable in 2022

### Help us finalize the Community Team goals for 2022

Along with this [Trello board](https://trello.com/b/Mlw6RPU0/community-team-2022-goals),
some open discussion sessions are being planned. In these discussion sessions, deputiesProgram

and community team members can join to chat, ask questions about specific goals,

In addition to these discussions, we are also planning synchronous discussions over
video on February 10, 2022, at the same timings:

 * **APAC/EMEA Community Team Goals – Video discussion (over zoom):** [February 10 2022 12:00 UTC](https://www.timeanddate.com/worldclock/fixedtime.html?iso=20220210T1200)

**All of you are cordially invited to join us for the Community Team goal discussion
sessions! **

You can either join us in Slack during the Community Team chats being held on February
3 (if you don’t have a Slack account yet, please visit: [https://make.wordpress.org/chat/](https://make.wordpress.org/chat/)
to create one) or participate in our video discussions on **February 10th**.

# 󠀁[2022 Goals for the Community Team: Suggestions Invited](https://make.wordpress.org/community/2021/11/05/2022-goals-for-the-community-team-suggestions-invited/)󠁿

As 2021 is slowly coming to an end (can you believe it?) it is time to start thinking
about the Community Team’s goals for 2022. While 2021 felt like a continuation of
2020, we did see some exciting changes on the horizon, especially as we paved way
for the return of [in-person WordPress meetups](https://make.wordpress.org/community/2021/07/01/in-person-meetup-events-for-vaccinated-community-members/),
[WordCamps](https://make.wordpress.org/community/2021/09/13/announcement-updated-guidelines-for-in-person-wordcamps/),
and [do_action charity hackathons](https://make.wordpress.org/community/2021/09/27/announcement-returning-to-in-person-do_action-charity-hackathons/).
I feel that 2022 will be a pivotal year for our team as we begin to see a return
to in-person events after nearly 18 months of online events. Hence, it seems prudent
that the team starts thinking of its 2022 goals early on.

This post is intended as an open thread for suggestions for our 2022 team goals.
Please share your ideas on what our team should try to accomplish in 2022. Ideas
that were suggested in the past and new ideas are welcome.

As you can see in brainstorming posts from [2021](https://make.wordpress.org/community/2020/11/16/community-team-goals-for-2021-share-your-suggestions/),
[2020](https://make.wordpress.org/community/2020/01/15/community-team-goals-for-2020-suggestions-wanted/),

[2017](https://make.wordpress.org/community/2017/01/02/2017-goals/), and [2016](https://make.wordpress.org/community/2015/12/22/2016-goals/),
every year we collected and shortlisted a long list of goals for our team. However,
the team often fell short of meeting these goals. As we are on the cusp of a challenging(
and exciting!) year, it feels more prudent to have a small set of achievable goals
that will help us find a direction for our team.

While all ideas are welcome, **we request you to focus on high-level goals that
are achievable, which will set the direction for our growth as we step into a new
year.**

We will leave this post open for comments until **~December 6, 2021 (Monday)~** **
December 13 (Monday)** to give everyone time to make their suggestions. After that,
we will be organizing brainstorming sessions to summarize the suggestions and filterFilter
