Rethinking our Monthly Team Meetings

The problem

Over the past months we’ve tried two meeting slots at different times, then a 12-hour open window, hoping to catch more people across timezones. Neither change moved the needle. Attendance and participation remain low, and, as we discussed openly in the April meeting, most of the value of these meetings can already be absorbed by reading the agenda or the recap afterward. If a meeting can be fully replaced by a P2P2 P2 or O2 is the term people use to refer to the Make WordPress blog. It can be found at https://make.wordpress.org post, it’s not really a meeting anymore.

We (the 2026 Team Reps) have talked this through and want to propose splitting what today is a single monthly meeting into two separate, more focused things.

The proposal

1. A monthly written update (unchanged in spirit, clarified in purpose)

We’ll keep publishing a monthly post at the start of each month summarizing what the team has been working on: policy changes, WordCamps, meetupsMeetup Meetup groups are locally-organized groups that get together for face-to-face events on a regular basis (commonly once a month). Learn more about Meetups in our Meetup Organizer Handbook., Campus Connect recaps, education programs, and anything else worth surfacing for people who can’t follow every P2 post or SlackSlack Slack is a Collaborative Group Chat Platform https://slack.com/. The WordPress community has its own Slack Channel at https://make.wordpress.org/chat/ thread.

What changes: this stops being “the agenda for a meeting” and becomes its own thing: a monthly digest, written by a different volunteer each month. We think this is a great low-friction way for people to start contributing to team coordination without needing to run a live session.

2. Coworking sessions

Instead of a status-update meeting, we want to try live coworking sessions: blocks of 1–2 hours where a group works together, in real time, on an actual team task.

Rough shape:

  • Short kickoff (5–10 min): whoever’s hosting explains what we’re working on that session and why, and takes quick questions.
  • Focused work blockBlock Block is the abstract term used to describe units of markup that, composed together, form the content or layout of a webpage using the WordPress editor. The idea combines concepts of what in the past may have achieved with shortcodes, custom HTML, and embed discovery into a single consistent API and user experience.: everyone works (same or related tasks) with the channel/call open for “does anyone know how…” questions as they come up.
  • Wrap-up (10–15 min): quick share of what got done, what’s blocked, and what needs follow-up.

Why we think this could work

The coreCore Core is the set of software required to run WordPress. The Core Development Team builds WordPress. insight from the discussion was that people don’t show up for information they can get elsewhere, they show up when there’s something to do together, or someone to ask in real time. A status meeting competes with reading a P2 post, and loses. A working session doesn’t have that competition, because you can’t “read” your way into having helped triage the backlog.

We’d love feedback before taking this further:

  • Does the split between “written update” and “coworking” make sense to you?
  • Any specific ideas about the coworking sessions format?
  • Any concerns about coworking sessions being harder to join for volunteers in less common timezones (worse than a single meeting would be, since we’re not proposing multiple slots yet)?
  • Should we pilot this for one or two months before committing, and if so, what would tell us it’s working better than the old format?

Community Team June 2026 meeting recap

This is a summary of the Community Team monthly meeting held on June 11, 2026. This month’s meeting was pushed from June 4 to June 11 because of WordCamp Europe 2026. Thanks everyone for joining and for keeping the Community Team work moving across time zones.

This month, we continued with the open meeting format. Instead of two separate sessions, we ran a single open meeting starting at 12:00 UTC and kept it open for 12 hours. People could drop in when it worked for them, leave check-ins, share thoughts on the topics, and carry on with their day.

There were also updates from the WordPress Nairobi community, including a hike and photo walk at Oloorua in Nairobi, with photos shared to the WordPress Photo Directory. The group is also organizing a picnic and networking meetup for the WordPress Nairobi community this month.

Several contributors are also helping with Campus Connect, WordPress Credits, GatherPress, meetup planning, and local community growth.

✨ Highlights

A few things worth noting from the agenda that came up during the session:

How to Bring Your Community to Make WordPress Slack explains how local meetup groups, locale communities, and flagship event teams can now request dedicated channels in Make WordPress Slack. Communities are asked to join #community-slack-migration and share their group name, Meetup.com URLURL A specific web address of a website or web page on the Internet, such as a website’s URL www.wordpress.org or equivalent community page, and the channels they need created. This is an important step toward bringing more local and regional community conversations closer to the wider WordPress project.

Open Source Starts in the Classroom: WordPress Education in Poland highlights how WordPress Credits, Campus Connect, and student showcases are growing in Poland, including work with universities and high schools ahead of WordCamp Europe 2026. It’s a strong example of how open sourceOpen Source Open Source denotes software for which the original source code is made freely available and may be redistributed and modified. Open Source **must be** delivered via a licensing model, see GPL. education can connect students, educators, and local WordPress communities.

Monthly Education Buzz Report – May 2026 shares updates from Campus Connect, WordPress Credits, and Student Clubs. WordPress education initiatives continue to grow, with more events, student-led activity, and regional participation across the program.

A few recent announcements and updates were shared:

WordCamp India 2027: What’s Next? Applications for the WordCamp India 2027 host city are open until the end of June 2026. Community Team managers are expected to review applications in mid-July, with the host city announcement planned for early August.

Community Slack migration is now open for local communities Communities interested in joining Make WordPress Slack can now begin requesting channels through #community-slack-migration. This is especially relevant for local meetup communities, locale groups, and event teams that want to connect more directly with the broader WordPress project.

WordPress education initiatives continue to grow Campus Connect, WordPress Credits, and Student Clubs are seeing strong momentum, with new events, new cohorts, and student-led activity across different regions. Community Summit alongside a flagship event for 2027 or 2028

The post Community Summit alongside a flagship event for 2027 or 2028 was shared again as useful context for future planning and ongoing community conversations.

@patricia70 noted that she had published the question because the call for the WordCamp Europe 2028 host city is open, and if a Community Summit is organized alongside it, applicant teams need to know early so they can ask for the corresponding venue and catering offers before applying.

@malgra added that, ideally, a decision needs to be made as soon as possible because teams are preparing applications, and this would require additional reservation and space planning.

Worth a read for any organizer looking to shake things up.

WordPress Academy for Young People in Kraków by Sebastian Misniakiewicz. A look at bringing WordPress education to young and beginner audiences in Kraków, ahead of WordCamp Europe 2026. A strong example of community-driven outreach and a model worth considering for other host cities.

A few recent announcements and updates were shared:

WordCamp India 2027: What’s Next? by Karen Arnold. WordCamp India will become the fourth flagship WordCamp, joining WordCamp Europe, WordCamp US, and WordCamp Asia. Host city applications are open, with a deadline at the end of June 2026.

Introducing the WordPress Facilitator Training Program by Destiny Kanno. This new program is aimed at equipping WordPress community members with the skills to lead sessions, workshops, and discussions more effectively.

Announcing our 2026 Global Partners and Welcoming Bluehost as a 2026 Global Partner by Harmony Romo. These posts introduced the 2026 Global Partners lineup, including Automattic, Hostinger, Woo, and Bluehost. These partnerships help sustain WordPress community events worldwide.

💬 Open Floor

These were the main questions and topics that sparked conversation.

Could we create a regular space for organizers to share experiences?

@unintended8 raised a useful open floor question after having a couple of calls with event organizers where people shared tips, experiments, lessons learned, and things that worked or did not work at past events. The conversations were valuable, but they happened by chance. So the question was: how could we create a regular space to share these conversations?

Several ideas came up. @mosescursor suggested adding a session into the SlackSlack Slack is a Collaborative Group Chat Platform https://slack.com/. The WordPress community has its own Slack Channel at https://make.wordpress.org/chat/ meeting or introducing themes for Community Team meetings. @mohkatz suggested something like monthly community organizers office hoursOffice Hours Defined times when the Global Community Team are in the #community-events Slack channel. If there is anything you would like to discuss – you do not need to inform them in advance.You are very welcome to drop into any of the Community Team Slack channels at any time., with both live Zoom or Google Meet sessions and async Slack participation for those unable to attend live. @aquila20 and @yoga1103 agreed with the idea.

There was also discussion about where this should live. @unintended8 suggested that #community-events is probably the natural home, but conversations can easily get buried there. A possible combination emerged: a live call where organizers can speak freely, paired with a recap on Make Community or a pinned shared board/document to collect broader lessons and ideas.

@harmonyromo suggested creating some kind of board or document that could be pinned to the channel so ideas stay collected and easier to revisit.

@adityakane raised another important point: there are quite a few people in the pipeline for mentoring events or becoming program supporters, and this may need more eyes and hands to help move things along.

@unintended8 suggested getting this sorted out by the end of the following week.

Request for Feedback: Guide to Speaking at Meetups and WordCamps about the Core AI Projects by Jonathan Bossenger. The AI team is seeking community input on a guide designed to help contributors speak about WordPress’s coreCore Core is the set of software required to run WordPress. The Core Development Team builds WordPress. AI efforts at local events. Your feedback, especially from organizers and frequent speakers, is welcome.

🎤 Open floor

The open floor also included a call for volunteers to facilitate future meetings. @mohkatz offered to help facilitate a future meeting after being encouraged by @mosescursor and @nazmul111. Thank you!

There was also a nice side conversation around a possible Lugano meetup. @Rashunda shared interest in gathering WordPress users in the Swiss Italian area, possibly leading to a future WordCamp Lugano. @patricia70 offered to help connect with previous co-organizers and pointed to the WordCamp Switzerland 2026 call for organizers, where Italian-speaking organizers would be especially welcome.

WordCamps in Africa and around the world. @mosescursor and others shared updates on events held in Uganda and Nigeria. It continues to be exciting to see the African WordPress community grow. WordCamp recaps from Valencia and Bhopal were also celebrated, both milestone editions in their own right.

Campus Connect momentum. The program is reaching students globally. This month’s highlights included the first Campus Connect in Malaysia and a multi-campus program in Uganda led by @mohkatz (that was also around in the meeting!) that reached over 1,200 students. Remarkable scale for a still-young initiative.

📝 Open discussions

These were the two questions that sparked the most conversation.

Where should content live: WordCamp CentralWordCamp Central Website for all WordCamp activities globally. https://central.wordcamp.org includes a list of upcoming and past camp with links to each., Make/Community, or organized chaos?

Several people weighed in (and “organized chaos” did get a vote or two). The most useful framing that emerged from the conversation came from @mohkatz, who suggested Make Community for general announcements and WordCamp Central specifically for event-related news. @nilovelez proposed that Central is worth preserving for event-specific content, with Make as the home for general team news, and that Central posts can always be linked from Make. @unintended8 floated a possible distinction: “general public” → Central, “learnings for organizers” → Make.

One thing everyone seemed to agree on: before we can make a real decision, we need to know where people actually read. Which platform has more reach? Which one drives more engagement? We don’t currently have a clear answer to that, and we probably should. One practical outcome in the meantime: it became clear that a spring cleaning of publishing permissions is overdue, nobody is quite sure who has access to write where.

How do we make these meetings worth attending?

This one hit close to home, especially for a meeting about meeting engagement.

@patricia70 suggested sending a direct message/email to the team reminding people that participating live and shaping the discussions matters. @unintended8 noted that many people have notifications off and may not even realize the meeting is happening, @aquila20 confirmed he’d missed it for exactly that reason.

In the Americas session, someone half-jokingly proposed a raffle among attendees. @tobifjellner offered a more structural take: with async channels available 24/7, the bar for showing up synchronously has to be high. He suggested that meetings might work better with slightly longer “open windows” (12 to 24 hours) where threads stay active and input gets collected before closing, rather than requiring everyone to be present at the same time.

There’s something worth exploring there. If you have ideas, this comment section is a good place to start.

📢 Announcements

  • 2026 Community Team Reps. Juan Hernando (yeah, me) joined the team as a new Team RepTeam Rep A Team Rep is a person who represents the Make WordPress team to the rest of the project, make sure issues are raised and addressed as needed, and coordinates cross-team efforts. for 2026, alongside the three continuing reps. The meeting was gracious enough to celebrate this, thank you all for the kind words. No pressure now 😅
  • Monthly Education Buzz Report – March 2026. Destiny Kanno’s latest report covers another strong month for the education programs. Notable highlights include ten new institutions joining the WordPress Credits program and the launch of a new Leading WordPress Education Programs course on Learn WordPress. Worth a read if you work in or near the education space.
  • Campus Connect–Specific Mentor Program retired. Its responsibilities are now absorbed into the existing Event Supporters program, simplifying the support structure for WPCC events.

🎤 Open floor

Three topics came up outside the agenda and both deserve their own follow-up.

Community Summit planning. @patricia70 shared a post she’d been working on for two months about scheduling a Community Summit alongside a flagship event in 2027 or 2028. The key point: this needs to be decided early, as it affects the host city call, venue capacity, catering, and the number of attendees. If you have any thoughts, head to that post and leave a comment.

Live captions and translation at multilingual WordCamps. @patricia70 raised the question of whether there’s a community-owned account for live captioning and translation tools, something WordCamp Switzerland would benefit from, as they plan to host speakers in English, German, French, and Italian. @unintended8 shared that WordCamp Asia is using Interprefy this year (while past editions of WCA and WCEUWCEU WordCamp Europe. The European flagship WordCamp event. used Wordly AI) and that a conversation with the Central Production Team is already underway to explore a global account that multiple events could share. Switzerland and Canada were mentioned as natural early candidates apart from flagship events.

Where do declined applications go? @tobifjellner noted that there are many automated decline messages going out to cities and groups, and asked whether there’s a public resource listing the most common reasons, something that could even be linked from application forms. @unintended8 confirmed that no such resource currently exists (or if it does, it’s buried deep in the handbooks), but that the idea is solid. Common reasons include applications from people without an existing local group or wanting to organize everything alone. This might be worth turning into a proper handbook page.

WordPress Credits Program Update

The WordPress Credits Program continues to grow following the successful pilot at the University of Pisa.
New institutions, including Fidélitas University (Costa Rica), are joining the program. The initiative aims to expand the student contributor base by 2026, encouraging more participation from mentorsEvent Supporter Event Supporter (formerly Mentor) is someone who has already organised a WordCamp and has time to meet with their assigned mentee every 2 weeks, they talk over where they should be in their timeline, help them to identify their issues, and also identify solutions for their issues., educators, and companies worldwide.

Recently, the program also updated its sponsorship guidelines to ensure meaningful engagement and educational impact.

Companies can no longer sponsor tools or resources alone; they must also sponsor one or more mentors to align with the program’s educational goals.

WordPress Campus Connect – Organizing Guidelines

Discussion around who can organize WordPress Campus Connect events continued.

  • Anyone affiliated with a college, university, or educational institute can host.
  • A faculty member must apply on behalf of the institution and nominate at least two student coordinators to ensure continuity.
  • @webtechpooja shared updates about upcoming Campus Connect Ajmer and mentorship efforts for events in India and the Philippines.

Announcements and Highlights

WordCampWordCamp WordCamps are casual, locally-organized conferences covering everything related to WordPress. They're one of the places where the WordPress community comes together to teach one another what they’ve learned throughout the year and share the joy. Learn more. Asia 2026 is planned for April 9–11, 2026, at Jio World Convention Centre, Mumbai, India.

@patricia70 provided updates about mentoring WordCamps in France and Germany (2026). @ritikaroy2830 announced the upcoming Kolkata Meetup and Campus Connect at RCC Institute of Technology (Jan 2026). @devmuhib and @mosescursor shared updates on local mentorship and campus contribution activities in Africa and South Asia.

WordPress 6.9 Development Update

WordPress 6.9 is planned for December 2, 2025. Release CandidateRelease Candidate A beta version of software with the potential to be a final product, which is ready to release unless significant bugs emerge. 1 (RC1) is scheduled for November 11, 2025.

Additionally, WordPress 6.9 BetaBeta A pre-release of software that is given out to a large group of users to trial under real conditions. Beta versions have gone through alpha testing in-house and are generally fairly close in look, feel and function to the final product; however, design changes often occur as part of the process. 3 is now available for download and testing. Notes: This recap is a summary of the Community Team monthly meeting. It will cover the discussion points, ideas, and decisions that came up during the meeting. The aim of this recap is to provide a quick overview for those who were unable to attend as well as an overview for everyone. @bobdunn-trainer reports engaging discussions on WordPress Event Talk, including a recent session featuring the Portugal Community discussing WordPress and community events in Portuguese.

@peiraisotta a sponsor team member for WordCamp Europe, is busy preparing for the event while mentoring WordCamp Krakow and do_actiondo_action do_action hackathons are community-organised events that are focussed on using WordPress to give deserving charitable organisations their own online presence. Learn more on doaction.org. Port Harcourt. She’s also actively handling emails and administrative tasks for the 5ftF initiative.

@matteoenna translates Five for the Future for his workplace, excitedly organizes for WordCamp Europe, and offers to assist with open projects, considering himself a junior.

@nukaga contributed to the closing activities of WordCamp Asia 2024 and conducted vetting for Meetups and WordCamps, showcasing her active involvement in the WordPress community.

@hellosatya is working on visa documentation for WordCamp Europe, graduated from the WordPress Contributor Mentorship Program, and seeks sponsorship assistance through the 5ftF initiative.

@patricia70 is focused on her role in the WCEUWCEU WordCamp Europe. The European flagship WordCamp event. Volunteer team and reflects on her experience as a mentorEvent Supporter Event Supporter (formerly Mentor) is someone who has already organised a WordCamp and has time to meet with their assigned mentee every 2 weeks, they talk over where they should be in their timeline, help them to identify their issues, and also identify solutions for their issues. in the mentorship program. @bobdunn-trainer, from the Community Voices show, reaches out to local WordPress communities, encouraging them to share their experiences and projects in their native languages on the show. @peiraisotta  follows up by tagging several individuals who are active in their communities, inviting them to connect with @bobdunn-trainer for potential features on the show. @matteoenna offers himself as a host for the show, showing eagerness to contribute.

Meanwhile, @patricia70 suggests drafting a proposal on the Polyglots P2P2 P2 or O2 is the term people use to refer to the Make WordPress blog. It can be found at https://make.wordpress.org channel regarding the handling of local channels in the WordPress global Slack. @peiraisotta supports the idea and asks Patricia to draft the proposal for the team’s input before publishing it. Shusei Toda raises a query about hosting an additional session for the AMER-friendly time slot and asks for volunteers.

Later on, @peiraisotta reminds the team to create GitHubGitHub GitHub is a website that offers online implementation of git repositories that can easily be shared, copied and modified by other developers. Public repositories are free to host, private repositories require a paid subscription. GitHub introduced the concept of the ‘pull request’ where code changes done in branches by contributors can be reviewed and discussed before being merged by the repository owner. https://github.com/ issues for specific tasks, proposing a streamlined process for task allocation and completion. Julia Golomb offers to host an AMER session, expressing her readiness to facilitate discussions whenever needed. @peiraisotta expresses gratitude for @juliarosia‘s willingness to step in and confirms that the necessary materials have been shared with her.

Call for Meeting Facilitators

The Community Team Monthly Meetings happen on the first Thursday’s of every month. These meetings can be facilitated and run by any member of the community team, and is a great opportunity to engage with the rest of the community and team.
