WordCamp US 2018 Contributor Day Recap

This year at WCUSWCUS WordCamp US. The US flagship WordCamp event. Contributor DayContributor Day Contributor Days are standalone days, frequently held before or after WordCamps but they can also happen at any time. They are events where people get together to work on various areas of https://make.wordpress.org/ There are many teams that people can participate in, each with a different focus. https://2017.us.wordcamp.org/contributor-day/ https://make.wordpress.org/support/handbook/getting-started/getting-started-at-a-contributor-day/. we had an incredibly productive day and lots of help from new contributors!

We had quite the ambitious list and we did really good! Here is what we worked on and next steps:

  1. Making process diagrams for processes described in our handbooks – The team started working on an outline for a diagram for sponsorship, next step is collaborating with design. The goal was to make the process of interacting with sponsor easier for organisers and more collaborative with sponsors. It’s my understanding that this is quite a complex project, we definitely need someone to take ownership of this to move forward.
  2. Organising the Trello board. Oh my! We have a TrelloTrello Project management system using the concepts of boards and cards to organize tasks in a sane way. This is what the make.wordpress.com/marketing team uses for example: https://trello.com/b/8UGHVBu8/wp-marketing. board with procedures thanks to a great group of new contributors that landed their project management expertise to the project! I will check with them to see if they are done and then I think we can start using it on January and test for 6 months as initially planned.
  3. Review of the deputyProgram Supporter Community Program Supporters (formerly Deputies) are a team of people worldwide who review WordCamp and Meetup applications, interview lead organizers, and keep things moving at WordCamp Central. Find more about program supporters in our Program Supporter Handbook. training materials. This is also quite a big project and we shall see how to proceed and who has the bandwith to take this on.
  4. Search through meetup.com for interesting/unusual meetupMeetup Meetup groups are locally-organized groups that get together for face-to-face events on a regular basis (commonly once a month). Learn more about Meetups in our Meetup Organizer Handbook. event formats/topics that could be recommended in future meetup organiser newsletter – Now there is a whole spreadsheet full of ideas!
  5. Summarise proposed 2018 goals – We have now a spreadsheet. Next step is checking what has been done and what has not been done: good base for our 2019 list of desiderata and goals.
  6. Adding email templates for responding to life-threatening allergy and a11yAccessibility Accessibility (commonly shortened to a11y) refers to the design of products, devices, services, or environments for people with disabilities. The concept of accessible design ensures both “direct access” (i.e. unassisted) and “indirect access” meaning compatibility with a person’s assistive technology (for example, computer screen readers). (https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Accessibility) needs notifications to the handbooks. Here they are! What’s next? How can we automate the first email to the attendee based on their selection?
  7. Last, but definitely not least: WordCampWordCamp WordCamps are casual, locally-organized conferences covering everything related to WordPress. They're one of the places where the WordPress community comes together to teach one another what they’ve learned throughout the year and share the joy. Learn more. Tel Aviv sent an application for 2019 🥳

I assume the next few weeks might be a bit slower than usual, with many countries (albeit not all of them) observing Christmas, New Year, etc… So I will add a reminder to myself to check with the people after January 7th to see if they will continue with the tasks and how things are going.

  • organising the Trello board – @wolfpaw volunteered to take the lead on this
    • Brainstorm with other teams that are using TrelloTrello Project management system using the concepts of boards and cards to organize tasks in a sane way. This is what the make.wordpress.com/marketing team uses for example: https://trello.com/b/8UGHVBu8/wp-marketing.: how they got started, how do they encourage its use, etc…
  • work on documentation from our “needs documentation” list
  • run a real-time deputyProgram Supporter Community Program Supporters (formerly Deputies) are a team of people worldwide who review WordCamp and Meetup applications, interview lead organizers, and keep things moving at WordCamp Central. And since we couldn’t really do much at WordCamp Europe, due to the lack of wi-fi, I suggest we reuse the plans we had for June 😉

We also need to decide who is going to lead the table and coordinate with @aaroncampbell

Ideas for experienced contributors

  • run a real-time mentorship training for any experienced WordCamp organisers who want to be trained as mentorsEvent Supporter Event Supporter (formerly Mentor) is someone who has already organised a WordCamp and has time to meet with their assigned mentee every 2 weeks, they talk over where they should be in their timeline, help them to identify their issues, and also identify solutions for their issues.. See:

WordCamp Europe 2018 – Squad Goals

We had a couple of comments and we threw a few ideas around during our most recent chat (recap to be done).

Thanks mainly to @andreamiddleton we have a number of tasks, now we need some “squad” leads. I will pingPing The act of sending a very small amount of data to an end point. Ping is used in computer science to illicit a response from a target server to test it’s connection. Ping is also a term used by Slack users to @ someone or send them a direct message (DM). Users might say something along the lines of “Ping me when the meeting starts.” some of you in the comments and in SlackSlack Slack is a Collaborative Group Chat Platform https://slack.com/. The WordPress community has its own Slack Channel at https://make.wordpress.org/chat/. to see if you are up to leading one of the initiatives.

I will also add a card for each task in the brand new Trello board for the Community Team. The TrelloTrello Project management system using the concepts of boards and cards to organize tasks in a sane way. This is what the make.wordpress.com/marketing team uses for example: https://trello.com/b/8UGHVBu8/wp-marketing. board is a work in project and I just started it, bare with me… we will ask someone from the Marketing Team how they manage theirs so we can get up to speed asap.

Here is the list of the tasks: for each one I tried to add the relevant links so we don’t have to waste time looking for them on the day. If there is already someone attached to the task I added their names as well.

2018 goals for the global community team: suggestions time!

Here on the global community teamGlobal Community Team A group of community organizers and contributors who collaborate on local events about WordPress — monthly WordPress meetups and/or annual conferences called WordCamps., for the past couple of years we’ve started off January by suggesting and discussing what we’d like to accomplish as a group over the next 12 months. (Here are the brainstorming posts for 2017 and 2016.) It’s January again, so let’s start talking about 2018 goals! 🙂

Please consider this an open thread for suggestions about what this team ought to focus on and/or try to accomplish in 2018. Once the group has had time to make suggestions, we’ll recruit someone to summarize all the suggestions (example), and then discuss as a group, to set priorities.

2016 Goals

I think it would be helpful for us to set some team goals for 2016 that we can use to guide how we prioritize work and projects. Let’s consider this an open thread for making suggestions for what we ought to focus on and/or try to accomplish in 2016, and then I’ll turn it into a survey so we can all weigh on on which things are most important.
