Contributor Orientation Tool

An online tool has been created by WordCampWordCamp WordCamps are casual, locally-organized conferences covering everything related to WordPress. They're one of the places where the WordPress community comes together to teach one another what they’ve learned throughout the year and share the joy. Learn more. Europe Organizers to help new contributors take part in building the WordPress platform.

By answering a series of questions, the Contributor Orientation Tool helps you learn about the different teams you can join to contribute.

The tool only takes a few minutes to use and is available on the WordCamp Europe (WCEUWCEU WordCamp Europe. WordCamp Europe 2019 – Community Team Plans

We are less than two months away from WordCampWordCamp WordCamps are casual, locally-organized conferences covering everything related to WordPress. They're one of the places where the WordPress community comes together to teach one another what they’ve learned throughout the year and share the joy. Learn more. Europe 2019, which means it’s time to get organised!

WordCamp Europe and WordCamp US are what we consider flagship events and are always a great opportunity for teams to get together, contribute and onboard more people. There are going to be a whole lot of us present and we should take advantage of that and maximize our time together.

As we did last year, please add in the comments ideas and suggestions for tasks we could work on together while in Berlin.

I will be available to lead the table: do the initial presentation, take on one macro task of group of people to work during the day but I think there should be at least other two Community Team experienced members that can help with guiding people throughout the day.

Deadline to comment is May 19 so we can discuss this during the next two Community chats: after that date I will summarise in a “squad goals” post (like the one we had last year) and we will go from there!

WordCamp US 2018 Contributor Day Recap

This year at WCUSWCUS WordCamp US. The US flagship WordCamp event. Contributor DayContributor Day Contributor Days are standalone days, frequently held before or after WordCamps but they can also happen at any time. They are events where people get together to work on various areas of https://make.wordpress.org/ There are many teams that people can participate in, each with a different focus. https://2017.us.wordcamp.org/contributor-day/ https://make.wordpress.org/support/handbook/getting-started/getting-started-at-a-contributor-day/. we had an incredibly productive day and lots of help from new contributors!

We had quite the ambitious list and we did really good! Here is what we worked on and next steps:

  1. Making process diagrams for processes described in our handbooks – The team started working on an outline for a diagram for sponsorship, next step is collaborating with design. The goal was to make the process of interacting with sponsor easier for organisers and more collaborative with sponsors. It’s my understanding that this is quite a complex project, we definitely need someone to take ownership of this to move forward.
  2. Organising the Trello board. Oh my! We have a TrelloTrello Project management system using the concepts of boards and cards to organize tasks in a sane way. This is what the make.wordpress.com/marketing team uses for example: https://trello.com/b/8UGHVBu8/wp-marketing. board with procedures thanks to a great group of new contributors that landed their project management expertise to the project! I will check with them to see if they are done and then I think we can start using it on January and test for 6 months as initially planned.
  3. Review of the deputyProgram Supporter Community Program Supporters (formerly Deputies) are a team of people worldwide who review WordCamp and Meetup applications, interview lead organizers, and keep things moving at WordCamp Central. Find more about program supporters in our Program Supporter Handbook. training materials. This is also quite a big project and we shall see how to proceed and who has the bandwith to take this on.
  4. Search through meetup.com for interesting/unusual meetupMeetup Meetup groups are locally-organized groups that get together for face-to-face events on a regular basis (commonly once a month). Learn more about Meetups in our Meetup Organizer Handbook. event formats/topics that could be recommended in future meetup organiser newsletter – Now there is a whole spreadsheet full of ideas!
  5. Summarise proposed 2018 goals – We have now a spreadsheet. Next step is checking what has been done and what has not been done: good base for our 2019 list of desiderata and goals.
  6. Adding email templates for responding to life-threatening allergy and a11yAccessibility Accessibility (commonly shortened to a11y) refers to the design of products, devices, services, or environments for people with disabilities. The concept of accessible design ensures both “direct access” (i.e. unassisted) and “indirect access” meaning compatibility with a person’s assistive technology (for example, computer screen readers). (https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Accessibility) needs notifications to the handbooks. Here they are! What’s next? How can we automate the first email to the attendee based on their selection?
  7. Last, but definitely not least: WordCampWordCamp WordCamps are casual, locally-organized conferences covering everything related to WordPress. They're one of the places where the WordPress community comes together to teach one another what they’ve learned throughout the year and share the joy. Learn more. Tel Aviv sent an application for 2019 🥳

I assume the next few weeks might be a bit slower than usual, with many countries (albeit not all of them) observing Christmas, New Year, etc… So I will add a reminder to myself to check with the people after January 7th to see if they will continue with the tasks and how things are going.

Ideas for experienced contributors

  • run a real-time mentorship training for any experienced WordCamp organisers who want to be trained as mentorsEvent Supporter Event Supporter (formerly Mentor) is someone who has already organised a WordCamp and has time to meet with their assigned mentee every 2 weeks, they talk over where they should be in their timeline, help them to identify their issues, and also identify solutions for their issues.. See:

Things that probably will not happen but if they do it would be great! 

  • Either publish something about the team structure and the decision making process or kill it forever (since without doing anything formal we changed completely the way we operate in the past 12 months I am inclined to kill it, but might be worth to have one final brief discussion for closure)

Call for volunteers: Contributor Drives Document

Hi Team

we have been contacted by Angela Jin, who is putting together some documentation for small scale contributor drive events for individual Make WordPress teams.

The goal is to create a how-to resource which hopefully will make organising contributor drives an easier process for everyone involved .

This documentation will consist of:

  1. A “Contributor Drive Community Team Overview”, which will provide information about your team and the projects available for contributor drives
  2. A general “Contributor Drive Overview” that introduces what contributor drives are and how to organize one.

Feedback from the Community Team is needed to identify projects within the Community Team that are suitable for contributor drives: we should be also able to explain how each project fits into the overall team goals, what steps contributors would need to take to tackle the project, as well as what resources/tools/skills contributors need to do so.

Angela is working on a document and it would be great if someone within the team could lead this effort.

Planning for WCEU Contributor Day

Here are some ideas I had; please don’t take them as settled, because this is just my first brainstorming pass:

I think it might be good to host an in-person meetupMeetup Meetup groups are locally-organized groups that get together for face-to-face events on a regular basis (commonly once a month). Learn more about Meetups in our Meetup Organizer Handbook. orientation as well as (if possible), an in-person deputyProgram Supporter Community Program Supporters (formerly Deputies) are a team of people worldwide who review WordCamp and Meetup applications, interview lead organizers, and keep things moving at WordCamp Central. Find more about program supporters in our Program Supporter Handbook. training session.

Project ideas for experienced contributors:

  • work on the grants program
  • make a list of “active contributors” or whatever we’re calling the folks who might get the new contributor badge

Project ideas for new contributors who are involved in a local meetup group:

  • community meetup testimonial videos (multi-lingual)
  • meetup best practices list for: running meetings, finding speakers, etc — essentially in which the best practices list might be created by meetup attendees answering a survey with questions like “what topics interest you,” “what were your favorite meetupsMeetup Meetup groups are locally-organized groups that get together for face-to-face events on a regular basis (commonly once a month). Learn more about Meetups in our Meetup Organizer Handbook. last year,” “what meeting times/dates are best for you” — essentially our year-end survey, with some additions?

New contributors who are 100% new to community and have no local WP group:

  • attend an in-person meetup organizer orientation
  • compile a list of local diversity in tech groups to help make a resource for local organizers who want to recruit diverse speaker lineups
  • testing the speaker application pluginPlugin A plugin is a piece of software containing a group of functions that can be added to a WordPress website. They can extend functionality or add new features to your WordPress websites. WordPress plugins are written in the PHP programming language and integrate seamlessly with WordPress. These can be free in the WordPress.org Plugin Directory https://wordpress.org/plugins/ or can be cost-based plugin from a third-party? maybe?

WordCamp US Contributor Day Projects

In a little less than a month, many of our contributors will be together at WordCampWordCamp WordCamps are casual, locally-organized conferences covering everything related to WordPress. They're one of the places where the WordPress community comes together to teach one another what they’ve learned throughout the year and share the joy. Learn more. They are events where people get together to work on various areas of https://make.wordpress.org/ There are many teams that people can participate in, each with a different focus. https://2017.us.wordcamp.org/contributor-day/ https://make.wordpress.org/support/handbook/getting-started/getting-started-at-a-contributor-day/., and this will be a great chance for us to get some work done on Community programs and tools! We’ll want to plan for projects that can include people who’ve been contributing to the Community Team for a while, and then also projects that will work for people who are coming to us for the first time. Here are some suggestions that I think have a good balance between development, documentation, testing, community management, and design tasks:

  • add a metaMeta Meta is a term that refers to the inside workings of a group.   • plan for a new, WordCamp-surplus-inclusive & fan-designed swag store that organizers can order from autonomously
  • mentorship/organizing task list that lives inside WordCamp dashboard (@brandondove similar to what we scoped out at the opening of this year)
  • finishing touches on meetup application on Central
  • micro-grant application on Central
  • edit and finally publish the WordCamp toolkit
  • making design kit variations
  • editing handbook, orientation scripts

Global Translation Day 2

Hello hello!
As some of you might know, last April the Polyglots teamPolyglots Team Polyglots Team is a group of multilingual translators who work on translating plugins, themes, documentation, and front-facing marketing copy. https://make.wordpress.org/polyglots/teams/. hosted the first Global Translation Day with 24 hours of streamed sessions and live events around the world. It was an incredible experience: we translated thousands of strings, on-boarded hundreds of new contributors and ate tons of cake (oh well, that might have been only in Torino). It was such an incredible experience that we decided to have another one on November 12 and we would like to get *even* more people excited from all over the world.

I have been involved with Polyglots and Community for a while now and I think it would be very helpful to have the support from the Community team to do some outreach.

I will get in touch with WordCamps that have Contributor Days coming up to announce the event, and I think it would be super cool and effective if we could send a message to all MeetupsMeetup Meetup groups are locally-organized groups that get together for face-to-face events on a regular basis (commonly once a month). We have a ton of materials from last WGTD to help Meetups organise a local event if they want to, even if they never contributed to Polyglots before.
