What can we do to improve translations/subtitles?

Howdy ModSquad,

While we have added a lot of muscle to help with moderating international videos, we still don’t have nearly as much of those coming in (though this is growing) as we do in English. We are also getting close to a critical mass where we have more mods than videos, as I have a ton of interested applicants I have been holding off on welcoming to the squad. How many? 24 applications so far. 🙂

That’s the good news (the other good news being that most of those mods are international as well) but what do we do in a situation where me have way more mods around than videos to mod?

Translating wordpress.tv

You may not know this because we don’t get too many submissions, but it is easy to add a caption file to videos on wordpress.tv: http://wordpress.tv/using-amara-org-to-caption-or-subtitle-a-wordpress-tv-video/

With that in mind, how do we feel about starting a new sub-team within the ModSquad aimed at translating our current (and future) English language videos by adding captions, so that we can start sharing the wealth of WordPress knowledge we see every day.

Since so many of us are involved in local MeetupsMeetup Meetup groups are locally-organized groups that get together for face-to-face events on a regular basis (commonly once a month). Learn more about Meetups in our Meetup Organizer Handbook. and Contributor Days (at local WordCamps) another key role this translation team could help with is local outreach. For example, how cool would it be to have a “Translation Party” at your next meetupMeetup Meetup groups are locally-organized groups that get together for face-to-face events on a regular basis (commonly once a month). Learn more about Meetups in our Meetup Organizer Handbook.,?

Anyone interested in helping to build this new team? What else can we do to take our current library of videos and expand it’s reach globally?

Get Involved

Big news! On Monday, we’ll be launching a new top-level menu item called Get Involved, which will include options to Submit a Video, Caption a Video, and Apply to be a WordPress.tv Moderator.

Captioning on WordPress.tv is soon to become a reality. For details, please see https://make.wordpress.org/docs/2013/02/21/hello-docs-folks-theres-a-new-project-set/

The Docs group will be heading up the captioning effort, as you see there, so this won’t add much to the current mod workload. If someone reports any issues with a caption, though – if it’s reported to be inaccurate, profane, spam, or problematic in any way – please unattach the caption file from the video, but don’t delete it. On Monday you’ll see a new metaMeta Meta is a term that refers to the inside workings of a group. For us, this is the team that works on internal WordPress sites like WordCamp Central and Make WordPress. field for captions in the Edit Post screen.

Caption files will be uploaded via a form similar to the video upload form, so there’s nothing you’ll have to do to connect them.

Submit a Video: On Monday, we’ll quietly take off the password protection and then announce it within the Events contributor group. I’ll be sure to set very low expectations for moderation time. 🙂

Apply to be a WordPress.tv Moderator: I’ve created a draft application, which I’d love you guys to look over: http://wordcampcentral.polldaddy.com/s/wordpress-tv-moderator-application

Please let me know what edits you’d suggest. It’s loosely based on the WordCampWordCamp WordCamps are casual, locally-organized conferences covering everything related to WordPress. They're one of the places where the WordPress community comes together to teach one another what they’ve learned throughout the year and share the joy. Learn more. organizer application. We’re obviously going to need to continue to grow, especially now that we’re going to be taking submissions from the general public, and I think this is a good way to start the vetting process for new mods.

Please share any concerns you have here. Yay! WordPress.tv is Taking Off, and the work you guys do so carefully and reliably is SO much of why we can grow. Thank you, thank you, thank you – from the bottom of my heart.
