WCUS 2023 Contributor Day: What should we work on?

With less than 2 months to WCUSWCUS WordCamp US. The US flagship WordCamp event. 2023, we have been asked to share our thoughts and goals with the Contributor Team.

So far this year we’ve had some robust discussions at both flagship WordCamps. Let’s keep that going!

Hello there! After WCEUWCEU WordCamp Europe. The European flagship WordCamp event., I have a couple of ideas:
- On top of the main topics/working activities, make sure that there are program managers a available to do in-person budget reviews. It would be a good idea to inform all attendees that if they need an in person budget review, they can let you know in advance. But there is always the chance that they arrive without letting you know first, so just in case let’s have someone available.
- If among the attendees there are organizers who have already organized or are organizing a new format pilot event, it would be great to have them share their experience
- One table to review the new documentation we’re working on
- One table of supporters to do vetting and HS triage (could be organized also as a training for new supporters to work by doing)

I was just introduced to a feature we have on WordCampWordCamp WordCamps are casual, locally-organized conferences covering everything related to WordPress. They're one of the places where the WordPress community comes together to teach one another what they’ve learned throughout the year and share the joy. Learn more. sites for organizers that I had no idea existed. I don’t think we have any docs related to it currently. I’m sure other features have documentation needs that could be captured and written.
1. I propose that we have a group dedicated to going through the WordCamp tools documentation to ensure they’re up-to-date.
In addition, I ran into some redundancy the other day (and a possible bug) in one of our WordCamp organizer tools. This happens when we lack docs on a feature or a continuity problem with contributors.
1. I propose we look for duplication in our process and documentation to minimize confusion for Program Managers, Program Supporters, Event Supporters, and Organizers.

I’m unsure if this is a discussion for community or metaMeta Meta is a term that refers to the inside workings of a group. For us, this is the team that works on internal WordPress sites like WordCamp Central and Make WordPress. (or both). Still, we should talk about the “accept our cookies banner” on WordCampWordCamp WordCamps are casual, locally-organized conferences covering everything related to WordPress. They're one of the places where the WordPress community comes together to teach one another what they’ve learned throughout the year and share the joy. Learn more. sites concerning global laws and regulations around privacy. I’m fairly certain we’re not in compliance with things like GDPR and CCPA if we just tell people that they have to accept our cookies or go away.

They are events where people get together to work on various areas of https://make.wordpress.org/ There are many teams that people can participate in, each with a different focus. https://2017.us.wordcamp.org/contributor-day/ https://make.wordpress.org/support/handbook/getting-started/getting-started-at-a-contributor-day/.. Would anyone from the Community Team be interested in hosting one or more of these discussions during Contributor Day?

• How to improve the Global Sponsorship program for organizers, community, and sponsors

• Make do_actiondo_action do_action hackathons are community-organised events that are focussed on using WordPress to give deserving charitable organisations their own online presence. Learn more on doaction.org. program more accessible. Background: do_action is an community-organized event that empowers charitable organizations with an engaging online presence, allowing them to focus on their work without website management getting in the way. With the do_action program, charitable organizations can focus on what they do best: creating a positive impact that changes lives. It’s a win-win situation that brings out the best in everyone involved! do_action is one of recommended event formats for WordPress MeetupMeetup Meetup groups are locally-organized groups that get together for face-to-face events on a regular basis (commonly once a month). I believe that do_action program can build strong connections between community members and real world use cases of WordPress potential to make multiple impacts. So we should encourage WordPress Meetup chapters to do do_action as it is an impactful event that may bring direct benefit to the community. In the past three years, only eight do_action events have been organized by WordPress communities around the world (ref: https://doaction.org/past-events/). We should aim to increase this number in the upcoming years.

• How to effectively increase the presence of underrepresented groups in local events, both among the participating audience and among organizers and speakers. At our local events (which are held in small towns and gather people living in small rural villages) the audience often consists of only white, mostly middle-aged males. Missing (a great deal) are women, who sometimes sign up but then do not show up. The domino effect is that it is difficult to find other people involved in organizing but also speakers. The demographics of these places, however, tell us that many people (of any gender) work in this area using WordPress. There are many barriers that prevent people from attending our events, starting with the communication of the events themselves. How to write event descriptions, what words to use to convince people that our events are safe spaces, how to communicate on social media? Can putting on the #WPDiversity Workshop (by Jill Binder) be enough to convince people to attend more? What else can we do?

If holding one or more of these discussions is of interest during WCUSWCUS WordCamp US. The US flagship WordCamp event. Contributor Day, it would be great to schedule to discussion to take place at a specific time and place, so that people who are interested in participating know when and where the discussion will be held.

@juliarosia suggested I should share my input from the team meeting earlier today. I’ll just leave most of my comment intact (with a few minor spelling/grammar adjustments):

…I wanted to chime in as there’s been several roadmap suggestions and a good bit of discussion in #sustainability team meetings (like the most recent one) about how to collaborate and contribute to some of the same initiatives, projects, and events.

It’s doubtful, I’ll be attending but I’m pretty sure some of the other folks in that channel will be attending WCUSWCUS WordCamp US. The US flagship WordCamp event. and Contributor DayContributor Day Contributor Days are standalone days, frequently held before or after WordCamps but they can also happen at any time.
