Covid Prevention Stickers

An update for all WordPress community organizers.

As in-person WordPress events are coming back, we announced the updated Covid-19 Guidelines in April 2022 to keep our community and events safe. WordCampWordCamp WordCamps are casual, locally-organized conferences covering everything related to WordPress. They're one of the places where the WordPress community comes together to teach one another what they’ve learned throughout the year and share the joy. Learn more. and MeetupsMeetup Meetup groups are locally-organized groups that get together for face-to-face events on a regular basis (commonly once a month). Learn more about Meetups in our Meetup Organizer Handbook. organizers are encouraged to follow the local regulation and provide masks and hand sanitizers around the venue space. WPCSWordPress Community Support WordPress Community Support PBC is a Public Benefit Corporation, created specifically to be the financial and legal support for WordCamps, WordPress Meetup groups, and any additional “official” events organized within the WordPress Community Events program. will also provide mask and communication stickers as part of the swag packs.

Stickers with a similar design were distributed at WordCamp Europe 2022 in Porto. While we are still waiting for them to be available in our Swag Store, to ship along with WordPress stickers and buttons for your events in the future, the downloadble and editable art print has been made available on WordCamp Handbook.

You can translate the stickers into your local language, and print them locally for your WordPress events.

Are the color communication stickers easily swappable? Communication preferences change over the course of a conference. We at Stimpunks usually recommend swappable, flippable cards.

These aren’t COVID prevention stickers, they are interaction badges developed by autistic communities. Has there been a problem with overloading their meaning?

  They are not “COVID Prevention stickers”. As disabled people keep saying, we are in the middle of multiple mass disabling events. We should be building virtual conference models for the future that include neurodivergent and disabled people (like Stimpunks helped do at the Conference to Restore Humanity) not kinda-abusing interaction badges at ill-advised meatspace meetupsMeetup Meetup groups are locally-organized groups that get together for face-to-face events on a regular basis (commonly once a month).   I believe that the Community Team already ordered a large supply of both the mask stickers and the interaction stickers, and thus anticipate that they will be put to use at upcoming WordCamps. I know that this may be imperfect, and also recognize that the stickers were created out of the desire for WordCampWordCamp WordCamps are casual, locally-organized conferences covering everything related to WordPress. They're one of the places where the WordPress community comes together to teach one another what they’ve learned throughout the year and share the joy. Learn more. attendees to be able to clearly communicate their comfort with social interaction (in the case of the interaction stickers), and to indicate comfort interacting only with masked people (in the case of the mask stickers). I agree that neither of these sets of stickers are (nor should be referred to as) “Covid prevention stickers” and thus the title of this post is misleading. While different from interaction cards, the interaction stickers can certainly be changed out as the user’s preference/needs change over the course of an event.
  
  Given that we have already ordered a large supply of stickers, and based on your comments, I would like to put great care into the messaging and language associated with both sets of stickers; and to integrate your feedback and any other feedback that we might receive as we update our materials in the future. The Community Team’s goal is to organize truly inclusive WordPress events. Your comments remind me that a critical part of that involves studying and heeding Disability Justice communities’ work, writings and advocacy.
  
  If the community team drafts some clear language around the stickers (specifically their intended use, their Disability Justice context, etc.) would you be willing to review?

    Language around the history and use of interaction badges would be very appreciated. We’d love to help and are excited at the prospect of interaction badges becoming normalized.
    
    Aside: We meet with SXSW regularly to discuss interaction badges, “Cavendish Space”, and access. We’re hoping to have some impact on next year’s SXSW.
