Recap of the Diverse Speaker Training group (#WPDiversity) on August 12, 2020

Summary:
We talked about how our July Diverse Speaker workshops went and the plans for beginner & intermediate workshops August through November. I shared a document for feedback for volunteer sign-ups for workshop assistants. Our workshops are going to be part of the new Learn WordPress initiative, for self-guided learning and live group discussions. We followed up on team members’ current tasks.

1. How our July workshops went and what the plans are for August and September

July went well! Here is our report:
https://make.wordpress.org/community/2020/08/06/diverse-speaker-workshops-report-july-2020/

@abhanonstopnewsuk, @Nalini, and the Marketing team did a great job of helping us promote and get a higher attendance in July!

@abhanonstopnewsuk, @Nalini , @OGlekler and @lmurillom are working on our August and September workshops now.

Starting in August, we are doing something else new:
We are alternating beginner and intermediate workshops each month.

August beginner workshops August 18-20 1.Impostor & topic 2.Pitch 3.Speaking online
August practise sessions August 25 & 27
September intermediate workshops September 8-10 1.Pitch 2.Speaking online 3.Tricky questions
October beginner workshops October 6-9 1.Impostor & topic 2.Pitch 3.Speaking online

Trainings for meetups, hold your own Diverse Speaker workshops:
On September 24, @angelasjin is holding one for the Asia time zone.
On October 24, @miriamgoldman is holding one for the Americas time zone.

2. Feedback requested: New form for workshop volunteers

This month, I am trying out formalizing the assistant & mentor roles for help during the workshop. I would love your feedback on this roles sign-up document. Today would be best, but over the next few days is also ok.

3. Our workshops going online for self-guided training and group discussions

Along with the world changes, the Community team is adapting. As such, we are preparing a roadmap for workshops that people can watch in their own time, and live group discussions about the material:

Our team is submitting workshops for this.

By the way, anyone in the community is welcome to submit a workshop for this! I encourage you to share your talents, skills, stories.

4. How are your tasks going?

What are you working on? How is it going? Do you have any obstacles? With colour:

  • Green: On plan. No help needed.
  • Yellow: Not on plan but I have a strategy to get there
  • Red: Not on plan, no plan to get there, I’m lost!

@miriamgoldman sent in her report: Green. Everything is on track to hold her training in October.

@cguntur: Mine is green as well. I will be sending out the google calendar invites for next week’s workshops later today.
