Title: WordCamp Asia Proposal Author: Jon (Kenshino) Published: March 29, 2019 Last modified: July 12, 2019 --- [ ](https://profiles.wordpress.org/kenshino/) [Jon (Kenshino)](https://profiles.wordpress.org/kenshino/) 5:37 am _on_ March 29, 2019   # WordCamp Asia Proposal Dear all awesome community members, ## **In short** We’re looking to run WordCampWordCamp WordCamps are casual, locally-organized conferences covering everything related to WordPress. They're one of the places where the WordPress community comes together to teach one another what they’ve learned throughout the year and share the joy. [Learn more](https://central.wordcamp.org/about/). Asia in 2020! ## **Introduction** In 2015, at the Community Summit in Philadelphia, a few of us got together and started talking about how great it would be if a WordCamp would happen in Asia that would serve to bring everyone together across the many separated land masses. We continued talking through various regional WordCamps (WordCamp US, Europe) and other city WordCamps around the world. We had a pretty major meeting in WordCamp Europe (Paris) with a fair bit of WordCamp organisers in Asia present alongside key WordCamp CentralWordCamp Central Website for all WordCamp activities globally. [https://central.wordcamp.org](https://central.wordcamp.org) includes a list of upcoming and past camp with links to each. deputiesProgram Supporter Community Program Supporters (formerly Deputies) are a team of people worldwide who review WordCamp and Meetup applications, interview lead organizers, and keep things moving at WordCamp Central. Find more about program supporters in our [Program Supporter Handbook](https://make.wordpress.org/community/handbook/community-deputy/). to talk about working this through. This spawned a [P2 post](https://make.wordpress.org/community/2018/02/18/new-regional-wordcamp-in-asia/) last year. We were recommended by prominent members in the WordCamp Central team to keep growing new city based WordCamps to make this a sustainable approach. ## **Our CoreCore Core is the set of software required to run WordPress. The Core Development Team builds WordPress. Belief** WordCamps in Asia have reached a critical mass that will enable a successful regional WordCamp. We believe that running this WordCamp will contribute directly to long term efforts in fostering WordPress interest in countries that lack it. With the continued successes of WordCamp US and WordCamp Europe, alongside the newly established and incredible WordCamp Nordic, we believe that Asia complements the effort created by all these regional WordCamps. ## **What we’ve done** * The WordCamp organisers in Asia have gone around volunteering, co-organising at other WordCamps. * Many have also actively become mentorsEvent Supporter Event Supporter (formerly Mentor) is someone who has already organised a WordCamp and has time to meet with their assigned mentee every 2 weeks, they talk over where they should be in their timeline, help them to identify their issues, and also identify solutions for their issues. for new WordCamps in Asia. * We’ve been discussing this approach with many WordCamp organisers in Asia across all the WordCamps that we go to ## **Current Stage** We have a proposal (hugely based and forked from the Nordic one) that is ready for Asia and the rest of the WordCamp community members to look at and help with. (This is available here – [https://docs.google.com/document/d/1bAyUa7Ya9xAvPa2krNN6WYGOoks5B2dAio7DyDWG6sg/edit?ts=5c88948e#](https://docs.google.com/document/d/1bAyUa7Ya9xAvPa2krNN6WYGOoks5B2dAio7DyDWG6sg/edit?ts=5c88948e#) take note that we’re still actively improving the proposal) We have a [Slack](http://wpasia.slack.com) instance whereby quite a few WordCamp Organisers in Asia are present and actively discussing the future of this setup.( You’re invited) We also have mentorship support from a Lead Organiser of WordCamp Europe. ## **Next Steps** * We will look at the feedback on the proposal and make improvements * We will elect a Lead Organiser within the Global Team * The Lead Organiser will then submit the official application to WordCamp Central * The Global Team will be re-organised (ensuring a proper allocation between organisers in the region) and an official Local team will be formed ## **Please help us!** We want to ensure that the WordCamp Asia is successful – and we’d like for you to tell us how! We’d like to leave this post and the [proposal](https://docs.google.com/document/d/1bAyUa7Ya9xAvPa2krNN6WYGOoks5B2dAio7DyDWG6sg/edit?ts=5c88948e#) open for comments until 12 April 2019. After which, we’re hoping to get the go-ahead from Central to get things moving! ### Share this: * [ Threads ](https://make.wordpress.org/community/2019/03/29/wordcamp-asia-proposal/?share=threads) * [ Mastodon ](https://make.wordpress.org/community/2019/03/29/wordcamp-asia-proposal/?share=mastodon) * [ Bluesky ](https://make.wordpress.org/community/2019/03/29/wordcamp-asia-proposal/?share=bluesky) * [ Facebook ](https://make.wordpress.org/community/2019/03/29/wordcamp-asia-proposal/?share=facebook) * [ X ](https://make.wordpress.org/community/2019/03/29/wordcamp-asia-proposal/?share=x) * [ LinkedIn ](https://make.wordpress.org/community/2019/03/29/wordcamp-asia-proposal/?share=linkedin) * [Login to Reply](https://login.wordpress.org/?redirect_to=https%3A%2F%2Fmake.wordpress.org%2Fcommunity%2F2019%2F03%2F29%2Fwordcamp-asia-proposal%2F%23respond&locale=en_US) 1. ![](https://secure.gravatar.com/avatar/6845456dbc9056f20a4cd50a6b95db78f2ae31df5c0601c613ee5b8939c41a82? s=32&d=mm&r=g) 2. [Hugh Lashbrooke](https://profiles.wordpress.org/hlashbrooke/) 9:07 am _on_ March 29, 2019 30. This is great – thanks for such a detailed proposal! 31. I left some quick comments on a few things in the doc, but I have some other questions about it that I’d like to raise here for transparency’s sake: 32. 1. Based on the proposed organising team, it looks like all of the organisers are from South-East Asia – this isn’t hugely surprising given that most WP community activity in the continent is in that region, but it is something worth improving. My concern, however, is that by not having organising team members in the other areas of Asia it will effectively turn this into a “WordCampWordCamp WordCamps are casual, locally-organized conferences covering everything related to WordPress. They're one of the places where the WordPress community comes together to teach one another what they’ve learned throughout the year and share the joy. [Learn more](https://central.wordcamp.org/about/). South-East Asia” rather than “WordCamp Asia”. It would be really great to see representation from India, Israel, Turkey, Lebanon, U.A.E, Russia, and other countries on the organising team in some form – is that something you have a plan to work on by changing the name of the event, or (better yet) increasing the national representation of the organising team? 33. 2. The proposed organising team is relatively male-heavy – gender diversity is something we strive for all across the WordCamp program and it would be great to see regional camps exemplify that diversity goal. Do you have a plan for increasing the female representation on the team? 34. 3. Q1 of 2020 makes sense to not clash with WCEUWCEU WordCamp Europe. The European flagship WordCamp event. or WCUSWCUS WordCamp US. The US flagship WordCamp event., but it does seem quite soon to organise an event of this scope. It’s not impossible of course, but seeing as though we’re at the end of Q1 2019, that gives you less than 12 months. Do you feel that’s doable? 35. Aside from those questions, I think your proposal is very detailed and covers most of the bases and info that would need to be looked at during this stage. Really great work to the whole team 🙂 36. * ![](https://secure.gravatar.com/avatar/88f08eb424e714cd32448449d76674213631919d1b90aceee9c47e336c46acbc? s=32&d=mm&r=g) * [Jon (Kenshino)](https://profiles.wordpress.org/kenshino/) 9:32 am _on_ March 29, 2019 * Hey [@hlashbrooke](https://profiles.wordpress.org/hlashbrooke/)! Thanks so much for the questions. It’s exactly what we need! * > 1. So we’ll definitely see representation from countries like India, Pakistan and likely a few that I can’t think off the top of my head. There have been quite a few people involved in proposing, planning and discussing (face to face or otherwise) and simply hadn’t had the chance to put their names up yet! * So far there have been light discussions to suggest that we may do a 2 persons per country setup to be involved in the Global Team to bring in as many countries as possible while keeping the organising team lean (as a start). * The current team you see now is a representation of a few people who pitched in to get the proposal ready. * Once the lead organiser has been elected, we would expect the Global Team to be re-made. * > 2. The proposed organising team is relatively male-heavy – gender diversity > is something we strive for all across the WordCamp program and it would > be great to see regional camps exemplify that diversity goal. Do you have > a plan for increasing the female representation on the team? * Diversity will be quite a key focus that we’ll be looking at from the start of forming the teams to the end of the event itself. Asia itself is quite a bastion of ethnic diversity, so we’d definitely want to extent that and keep as many areas of diversity covered! * In short: We do want to increase female representation! * (As a reminder, the current team is not indicative of the final global team) * > 3. Do you feel that’s doable? * The timeline of WordCamp Nordic was very similar to what we’re suggesting here. While we can’t promise that we’d be as fantastic as they were, we are striving towards it. * That being said, we’re not unopposed to pushing it back if it’s not ready. * The quality of the event matters a lot to us! - ![](https://secure.gravatar.com/avatar/1dba75a903be8eb13bae6f961d81a99e5c76d5ca8c327a18bc25e96df2417b99? s=32&d=mm&r=g) - [Hugh Lashbrooke](https://profiles.wordpress.org/hlashbrooke/) 9:40 am _on_ March 29, 2019 - > Once the lead organiser has been elected, we would expect the Global > Team to be re-made. - > we may do a 2 persons per country setup to be involved in the Global > Team to bring in as many countries as possible while keeping the organising > team lean - This sounds very positive and all makes sense 🙂 - > Diversity will be quite a key focus that we’ll be looking at from the > start of forming the teams to the end of the event itself. That being said, if you feel confident that this timeline works then that sounds good to me. - > The quality of the event matters a lot to us! - I would expect nothing less from you and this team – great work all round on getting this together. 37. ![](https://secure.gravatar.com/avatar/940264fd36e442cf969e05ac4b49b72685f8ee8288be46c80dd2d70c647a0505? s=32&d=mm&r=g) 38. I am excited to see this happen soon however, I would like to draw some intentions to the size of the WordCamp Asia, right now the expected audience from each country is unrealistic for the first WCASIA . I suggest add more countries and expect at least half of the given numbers of audience. 126. This would help you in many ways like you would have more venue available since the size is reduced, you have fewer expenses and thus your sponsor’s team will have to spend less time getting sponsors and other stuff. 127. As [@hlashbrooke](https://profiles.wordpress.org/hlashbrooke/) said, we are at the end of Q1 which means we have a quite short time to organize camp. Since this is the first Camp of this nature, it would take more effort, time and resources. 128. However, I am super excited to be part of it 🙂 129. ![](https://secure.gravatar.com/avatar/1421365118661a4c171f85b529550b5d756e22438feb2dc0643a8a893e02ced7? s=32&d=mm&r=g) 130.
