Recap from Meeting One

Last time we talked about what this group is for overall, and what we are doing.

Summary of meeting one:

There is a workshop that was started in Vancouver, other cities were inspired to run their own version, and then we collected the best of all the versions into a workshop that is up on Training right now, called Speaker Training [& Diversity Outreach]. It has already been proven to increase the number of people who identify as female speakers at MeetupsMeetup Meetup groups are locally-organized groups that get together for face-to-face events on a regular basis (commonly once a month). Learn more about Meetups in our Meetup Organizer Handbook. and WordCamps. On the other hand, not many cities know about it yet, so today we are going to talk about how we can promote it to them.

Goals LongTerm

The goal in 2018 is 5% of all meetups should embrace our training, which is 27 cities.

Goals of Today’s Meeting:

Today we brainstormed more ideas and created the beginnings of a promotion plan.

Previous discussion during the week received by @jillBinder from various community members

@AfshanaDiya suggested reaching out to the meetupMeetup Meetup groups are locally-organized groups that get together for face-to-face events on a regular basis (commonly once a month). Learn more about Meetups in our Meetup Organizer Handbook. organisers from different places.

Sheila said she could talk about it in the slack Brazilian group, and in the next local meet up. She also suggested writing articles. She also asked about WordPress TV.

Simona said their next WordCampWordCamp WordCamps are casual, locally-organized conferences covering everything related to WordPress. They're one of the places where the WordPress community comes together to teach one another what they’ve learned throughout the year and share the joy. Learn more. in Italy would be on the 15th of December, and she would talk to people there. She would like to run the workshop in April during WordCamp Turin.

Today’s Discussion

@andreamiddleton was able to clarify how various ideas were best able to get off the ground in the short term.

  • Doing videos is seen as a plus. The initial upload would be to WordPress TV and then YouTube When things go to YouTube they can make a playlist so it’s easy to find all videos in this categoryCategory The 'category' taxonomy lets you group posts / content together that share a common bond. Categories are pre-defined and broad ranging.
  • There is also the possibility of a mention in a quarterly/monthly email to Meetup organizers that is in the works.
  • Jill’s WCSEA talk is a great promotional asset once it is uploaded to WordPress TV

@newyorkerlaura suggested that the WCUSWCUS WordCamp US. The US flagship WordCamp event. Twitter could promote information regarding inclusivity to the community. Various other WordCamps may pick up on it from there. Perhaps the WCEUWCEU WordCamp Europe. The European flagship WordCamp event. team might be interested if asked.

@cguntur suggested:

  • Writing articles
  • She is starting a new meetup in Cupertino from January. She can talk about it at the meetup and see if there are people interested in it
  • Scheduling posts on twitter and Facebook groups

@jillbinder suggested

  • Reaching out to slack groups of countries if they have a Slack may be tactic as per Sheila’s suggestion
  • Speaking to people about it at WordCamps as several members had suggested speaking about it at WordCamps they will be attending

@andreamiddleton suggested:

  • Another potential asset would be to ask former workshop attendees to write articles about how attending the workshop affected them if they haven’t done so already

How might we organize all these suggestions:

We will work on some short term items, and we may ask the marketing team for help on long term items once we clearly define what we want to do. Marketing team meeting occurs weekly 11:00 am -12:00pm ET on Slack in the marketing channel

One item is for people in this team to receive training on the workshop. Being very familiar with the material will help everyone else going forward. (First training is Wednesday, December 20 at 5:00pm UTC (12pm Eastern).)
There may be another opportunity depending on reception and time availability

@blogaid
Proposed two areas of messaging that @Cguntur volunteered to flesh out and give to Jill for revision:

What is the message – who is the audience – what is the CTA – where do they hang

Scenario 1
What – Training for women speakers is available
Who – Meetup leaders
What – blurb for them to speak and where to find more info
Where – Meetup leader list

Scenario 2
What – How to take the training
Who – women wanting to speak
What – blurb on what they will find in the training and link to connect with live training
Where – Wordcamps, WP.tv, etc

Down the road, we might ask marketing for help with:
1. Text for emails if they come to pass
2. Suggested Tweet texts
3. Blog post text

In the next meeting

  • We can review the message together and talk about moving the plan forward long term.
  • Jill can start collecting short-term actions.

Other:

The doodle poll is tied for the time for the training next week. Jill was thinking that because it’s her first time running it online, an extra half hour of buffer “just in case it’s needed” time would be a good idea. So she’d like to propose that we start it at the earlier time at 5:00pm UTC (12pm Eastern) and schedule 2 hours. If anyone needs to leave after the 1.5 hour mark, they can. Hopefully that buffer time won’t be needed anyhow.
