Recognise volunteers in WordCamp websites

Hi!
I have been thinking about ways to recognise the volunteers at WordCamps. Beside getting them all on stage during closing remarks, what do you think about having a page where we can list them as we do for Attendees via their email or WordPress.orgWordPress.org The community site where WordPress code is created and shared by the users. This is where you can download the source code for WordPress core, plugins and themes as well as the central location for community conversations and organization. https://wordpress.org/ username?
Before opening a tracTrac Trac is the place where contributors create issues for bugs or feature requests much like GitHub.https://core.trac.wordpress.org/. ticket I would like to hear your feedback about it.

Attendees would need a way to be flagged as a volunteer, but I think it would be great to have a shortcodeShortcode A shortcode is a placeholder used within a WordPress post, page, or widget to insert a form or function generated by a plugin in a specific location on your site. that displayed them all. Definitely a long term win!

  Or you use a special ticket/coupon and filterFilter Filters are one of the two types of Hooks https://codex.wordpress.org/Plugin_API/Hooks. They provide a way for functions to modify data of other functions. They are the counterpart to Actions. Unlike Actions, filters are meant to work in an isolated manner, and should never have side effects such as affecting global variables and output. on that. But that’s less robust, as some volunteers might also be speakers who have bought their tickets with a speakers coupon.

Tampa 2016; we had admin flags for Organizer, Volunteer, Speaker, Sponsor and used some logic to determine on the badges which was the ‘prominent’ Label. The Admin Flags are a good way to show this, though, at least in a grouping.

You can create a Organizer > Team = Volunteer and use [organizers columns=”3″ teams=”volunteer”]

  That would also be possible (I added this new team CT for WCEUWCEU WordCamp Europe. The European flagship WordCamp event. this year), but that would also list them as organizers on their WordPress.orgWordPress.org The community site where WordPress code is created and shared by the users. This is where you can download the source code for WordPress core, plugins and themes as well as the central location for community conversations and organization. https://wordpress.org/ profile, which would not be ideal.

    But as said, it should only be used for actual organizers. You should use admin flags to mark attendees as volunteers or speakers. This is also useful, if you print different badges for those groups. And with the [camptix_attendees has_admin_flag="volunteer"] shortcodeShortcode A shortcode is a placeholder used within a WordPress post, page, or widget to insert a form or function generated by a plugin in a specific location on your site. you can easily print a list on the website.

I’m adding the flag successfully and toggling the people but getting no results on the page when using the short code.

        The best place would probably be the MetaMeta Meta is a term that refers to the inside workings of a group. For us, this is the team that works on internal WordPress sites like WordCamp Central and Make WordPress.-TracTrac Trac is the place where contributors create issues for bugs or feature requests much like GitHub.https://core.trac.wordpress.org/.. For a page listing volunteers, I would recommend using the Admin Flags feature, rather than creating a special organizers team, for the reason mentioned by @kau-boy.

I’ve been listed below the organizers (as a social media volunteer) before. They can definitely be on that page with GravatarGravatar Is an acronym for Globally Recognized Avatar. It is the avatar system managed by WordPress.com, and used within the WordPress software. https://gravatar.com/. links.

I agree it’s very important to recognise all WordCampWordCamp WordCamps are casual, locally-organized conferences covering everything related to WordPress. They're one of the places where the WordPress community comes together to teach one another what they’ve learned throughout the year and share the joy. Learn more. contributors. For WordCamp Paris 2018, i’ve began considering people as members of different teams. As we’re all contributing no matter which one we’re into. So of course Sponsors, Speakers, organisers, and attendees but also Volunteers will be listed.

BTW Thanks for the tip about admin flags @kau-boy

Moreover i’m strongly in favour of posting a dedicated post for each volunteer and organiser in which they would introduce themselves and explain why they are contributing.

I hope the other members of the WordCamp Paris organising team will agree with me about this last point 😉

We added Volunteering and Volunteer lists to Wapu.us Event Tracker.

That being said, I would be hesitant adding Volunteers to the site before the events. The site link is for credit and a lot of times people say they want to volunteer but never show up. They also get a free ticket and at most camps have to help about an hours worth of time.(not including setup and take down).

If it was my call, Yes add them but after the event.

I’m totally down with this idea, although for larger WordCamps this might prove to be a little complicated and you would need to state clearly up front the volunteer policy and how one becomes an official volunteer. I’ve seen camps get “last minute volunteers”, for whatever reason don’t feel they’re acknowledged.

Miami talks about honoring volunteers more officially last year, and I think we’ll move forward with this idea. It’s also our 10th anniversary in 2018 so we’ll be honoring other “types” of long standing volunteers as well.

I think large camps like US or EU with more than 100 volunteers are tricky to handle manually.

I’ve been a Volunteer Organizer for the last three years in my locale and love the idea. My faithful volunteers work very hard for an entire weekend. Anything to elevate this role in the eyes of our community is welcomed.

Thanks to everyone who commented! In the future we might want to consider a CPT for Volunteers, for the time being I think we all agree using the Admin Flags as suggested by @kau-boy would be a great starting point!

There is now a custom post typeCustom Post Type WordPress can hold and display many different types of content. A single item of such a content is generally called a post, although post is also a specific post type. Custom Post Types gives your site the ability to have templated posts, to simplify the concept. wcb_volunteer and the option to add them like speakers and organisers, but I’m still trying to figure out how to display them in the front end. There is no custom blockBlock Block is the abstract term used to describe units of markup that, composed together, form the content or layout of a webpage using the WordPress editor. The idea combines concepts of what in the past may have achieved with shortcodes, custom HTML, and embed discovery into a single consistent API and user experience., and the query loopLoop The Loop is PHP code used by WordPress to display posts. Using The Loop, WordPress processes each post to be displayed on the current page, and formats it according to how it matches specified criteria within The Loop tags. Any HTML or PHP code in the Loop will be processed on each post. https://codex.wordpress.org/The_Loop. block also doesn’t detect this post type.
