Team Reps and Monthly Community Team Chat Schedule

Team Reps for 2017

I posted back in November about electing new team reps for the global community teamGlobal Community Team A group of community organizers and contributors who collaborate on local events about WordPress — monthly WordPress meetups and/or annual conferences called WordCamps., and we got some nominations but never got round to having elections. 🙂 We had two nominations: @francina and @miss_jwo.  When I checked in with Jenny, she said she doesn’t have the bandwidth to take on the team repTeam Rep A Team Rep is a person who represents the Make WordPress team to the rest of the project, make sure issues are raised and addressed as needed, and coordinates cross-team efforts. role this year. (We’ll cross our fingers for 2018, though!) We need two reps for the system to work, and I’m very pleased to announce that @hlashbrooke volunteered to serve as our other team rep.  Since we only have two candidates for two positions, voting seems unnecessary. Thank you to Francesca and Hugh for all the hard work — past, present, and future — you put into our team!

Suggestion to change our Monthly Team Chat schedule

Speaking of the team, our monthly team chat is coming up next week, and it’s been scheduled at 19:00 UTC for a really long time. 19:00 UTC is roughly during working hours for anyone in the US, late in the evening for anyone in the EU, and in the middle of the night for lots of folks in Asia.

Keeping in mind that we don’t want to use SlackSlack Slack is a Collaborative Group Chat Platform https://slack.com/. The WordPress community has its own Slack Channel at https://make.wordpress.org/chat/. meetings to make decisions — community-wide discussions should be held here, so people can participate asynchronously — team meetings are important and should be as accessible to as many people as possible.

Timezones are hard, and of course there’s no single time that suits everyone. That being said, here are some ideas for ways we might be able to change the schedule to include more participants:

1. Have two meetings at different times on the same day, every month
Totally swiping this idea from the Polyglots teamPolyglots Team Polyglots Team is a group of multilingual translators who work on translating plugins, themes, documentation, and front-facing marketing copy. https://make.wordpress.org/polyglots/teams/., which has two meetings every week, on Wednesday at 6:00 & 11:00 UTC. They both have the same agenda, and the second feeds off the feedback from the other. We could do the same sort of thing, but at perhaps 20:00 & 8:00 UTC, to better include more active participants in our team.

2. Alternate the meeting times each month
This option makes meeting time/dates harder to remember but doesn’t require us to double up on the work/discussions/content. If we prefer this option, then we would probably still want to alternate between 20:00 UTC and 8:00 UTC on a monthly basis.

Please vote on changing the schedule for our monthly chat in this poll:

And you can, as always, share your thoughts in a comment on this post. 🙂 We’ll try to decide in time to shift the time for next week’s meeting, assuming we all agree on a change.
