WordCamp Talk Proposals weekly slack chat notes 18/01/17

This meeting focused on following up on comments from Ian on previous meeting notes :

Code base: slimming things down
The need for applicants to be site users

The summary here is pretty brief:

The necessary login and redirects are already in place, so no need for the development of any additional plugins or addition of any code.
Users can be logged into WordCampWordCamp WordCamps are casual, locally-organized conferences covering everything related to WordPress. They're one of the places where the WordPress community comes together to teach one another what they’ve learned throughout the year and share the joy. Learn more. sites without being assigned roles. This will avoid any undesirable accumulation of sites in their toolbars. Applicant interaction is entirely front-end.
We have a new directive to get the codebase down to approx 10k lines. There is still a lot of code written specifically for the original WP Idea Stream plugin that isn’t necessary for our purposes here, so we will whittle away and cut any fat, focusing on the main goal of this plugin: the talk submission and selection process.

Our next meeting is scheduled for Wednesday January 25 at 5pm UTC. I’ll be away so Tom Nowell will facilitate, who now has access to post notes here to the community blog.

get the codebase down to approx 10k lines

It’s currently around 10k lines (not counting whitespace and comments, which bring it up to around 23k). If we wanted a target to shoot for, a very rough guess would be between 2k and 5k.

I don’t think focusing on the number will be helpful, though. I think it’s much more beneficial to ask a question like, “What are the essential features for an MVPMinimum Viable Product "A minimum viable product (MVP) is a product with just enough features to satisfy early customers, and to provide feedback for future product development." - WikiPedia?” and “Is this line of code/UIUI UI is an acronym for User Interface - the layout of the page the user interacts with. Think ‘how are they doing that’ and less about what they are doing. component/whatever enabling a general-purpose pluginPlugin A plugin is a piece of software containing a group of functions that can be added to a WordPress website.   I misunderstood then. However I do think that having a target is helpful for us to prioritize as we might not agree on essentials. I understand the MVPMinimum Viable Product "A minimum viable product (MVP) is a product with just enough features to satisfy early customers, and to provide feedback for future product development." - WikiPedia argument, but we aren’t working from scratch. We’re working from something that was already built out and full of features. Ideally, and I guess I can only really speak for myself, our goal here was not to deliver an MVP but something already a bit more sophisticated, as we’ve used it outside of WordCampWordCamp WordCamps are casual, locally-organized conferences covering everything related to WordPress. They're one of the places where the WordPress community comes together to teach one another what they’ve learned throughout the year and share the joy. Learn more. sites and have had proof of concept for some length of time. I should have copied your list of suggested deletes, so I’ll go back and add those now.

    That’s a good point. Thinking about an MVP is probably the wrong approach, since it wouldn’t make sense to remove useful features that are already built.

    I should have copied your list of suggested deletes, so I’ll go back and add those now.
    
    That list was just thrown together quickly during the chat, so it’s nowhere near comprehensive. They were just examples to try and help draw the distinction between what makes sense for this specific use case, and what’s consistent with WordCamp.org. Some of them may be worth keeping, and there are almost certainly other things that could be trimmed that weren’t in that list.

@imath, when you look into replacing all the code for psuedo-pages/rewrites with shortcodes, if it looks like it’ll be a big mess, then let’s talk about it more before spending a lot of time changing things.

These can be free in the WordPress.org Plugin Directory https://wordpress.org/plugins/ or can be cost-based plugin from a third-party streamlined and made more consistent with how everything else works on WordCamp.org, but I also want to be careful that it remains internally consistent, rather than a patchwork because of conflicting visions for how it should work. If it feels like a bad idea to you, feel free to push back.

If we’d end up with a dozen shortcodes, for instance, then that’d probably be a bad user experience.

  For now i’ll touch to nothing as @tomjn is making great progress on this area and has ideas to improve the code (many thanks to him). He started with improving the logic of the post status use.
  
  More globally, i’m sorry i’m not a great fan of shortcodes, that’s probably explaining my first reaction. But as i said i’m fine with any improvements ☺️

    I’m open to maybe keeping the pseudo-pages too, but it probably warrants some more discussion. Maybe we see what other areas get removed, then circle back to this part later.
