Find more about program supporters in our Program Supporter Handbook. handbook has been updated to reflect this change. Please note that SSL certificates for new domains are issued only twice daily. This means that after creating a new site in the network, you’ll have to wait up to 12 hours before it gets a valid certificate. Previously issued certificates auto-renew every 60 days unless the site has been deleted.

Do they need to wait for the SSLSSL Secure Socket Layer - Encryption from the server to the browser and back. Prevents prying eyes from seeing what you are sending between your browser and the server. cert to be issued before doing anything, or is it just a matter of being aware that the site won’t be secure until then, but they can still start adding content, users, etc? If the latter, does it really introduce risk at that point, and if so, what are the risks?

  My advice is to not use the site until it has a valid SSLSSL Secure Socket Layer - Encryption from the server to the browser and back. Prevents prying eyes from seeing what you are sending between your browser and the server. certificate.
  
  The connection to the site will still be encrypted, and most browsers will let you by-pass the common name mismatch error, at least until we start forcing HTTPSHTTPS HTTPS is an acronym for Hyper Text Transfer Protocol Secure. HTTPS is the secure version of HTTP, the protocol over which data is sent between your browser and the website that you are connected to. The 'S' at the end of HTTPS stands for 'Secure'. It means all communications between your browser and the website are encrypted. This is especially helpful for protecting sensitive data like banking information. with HSTS, which we haven’t discussed yet.
  
  That said, it’s not always easy to tell one HTTPS error from another, because all of them carry the same or similar wording (“your connection is not private”) so you’ll need to look at the details to make sure you’re not being targeted in a MITM attack. So again, my advice is to not use the site until a valid SSL certificate has been issued. If this becomes a big inconvenience/bottleneck, we can look at decreasing the time window.

Just curious, what are the advantages of year.city.wordcamp.org format vs. city.wordcamp.org/year/?

The ones outlined in the September post seemed abstract, and pretty much all of the comments were “-1 for revert”.

One point was that it’s more consistent with the rest of WordPress.orgWordPress.org The community site where WordPress code is created and shared by the users. This is where you can download the source code for WordPress core, plugins and themes as well as the central location for community conversations and organization. https://wordpress.org/’s infrastructure (e.g. core.trac.wordpress.org), but we also have make.wordpress.org/community/ and developer.wordpress.org/reference/, not community.make.wordpress.org or reference.developer.wordpress.org 🙂

The other one was that it could provide more granular control at the DNSDNS DNS is an acronym for Domain Name System - how you assign a human readable address to a website’s exact numeric coded location (ie. wordpress.org uses the actual IP address 198.143.164.252). level over where each individual site is hosted, but that also seemed possible to implement at the NginxNGINX NGINX is open source software for web serving, reverse proxying, caching, load balancing, media streaming, and more. It started out as a web server designed for maximum performance and stability. In addition to its HTTP server capabilities, NGINX can also function as a proxy server for email (IMAP, POP3, and SMTP) and a reverse proxy and load balancer for HTTP, TCP, and UDP servers. https://www.nginx.com/. level with either structure.

  The reasons from the September post are the ones behind the migrationMigration Moving the code, database and media files for a website site from one server to another. Most typically done when changing hosting companies.. There was definitely a lot of support for keeping the city.wordcamp.org/year structure, but ultimately Matt decided that he thought the original one was better, so we went back to that.
