I think the underlying problem here is that the featured imageFeatured image A featured image is the main image used on your blog archive page and is pulled when the post or page is shared on social media. The image can be used to display in widget areas on your site or in a summary list of posts. is coupled with the sharing image, so I agree with @kraftbj that an additional metaMeta Meta is a term that refers to the inside workings of a group. For us, this is the team that works on internal WordPress sites like WordCamp Central and Make WordPress. box to choose a sharing image could be a good solution.

On the other hand, though, this does seem like an edge case, because in most circumstances setting the featured image works. Personally, I don’t see the big deal with just using the featured image and letting it be displayed on the page, or setting it and then using CSSCSS CSS is an acronym for cascading style sheets. This is what controls the design or look and feel of a site. to hide it.

I recognize that in this situation it’d be nice to be able to set the sharing image without having to set the featured image, but the downside is that we’d be cluttering the UIUI UI is an acronym for User Interface - the layout of the page the user interacts with. Think ‘how are they doing that’ and less about what they are doing. for this in the foreseeable future. We have filters, etc in place that make this pretty flexible (granted, that doesn’t help WordCampWordCamp WordCamps are casual, locally-organized conferences covering everything related to WordPress.
