Team Chat — May 29, 2014

First time we’ve actually had 5 Thursdays in a month, so this week’s topic is (virtual party), ha!

I know a handful of us are super backlogged on getting stuff done, so let’s use today’s meeting to just identify any issues that we need to work on moving forward, and keep it short and sweet.

I uploaded a tutorial for video file compression using the HandBrake transcoder.

If it is something we can use, I can expand it to cover how to do batch files also.

Moderator Orientation Details

Howdy new mods, as mentioned earlier this week, we will be doing an orientation in IRC (#wordpress-getinvolved on freenode) on Friday May 30, 2014 9am PDT Click the link to see what time it is in your area of the world

As something of an agenda (to keep me honest) we will cover the following

  • Some of the standards we use for content we publish.
  • Approving videos (please watch the video on this page before training)
  • Using tags to communicate with other mods, classify videos, and feature content
  • Managing site and theme features on wordpress.tv
  • Other moderator tips and tricks

As some of you mentioned, IRC is a new thing to you. To participate, you need an IRC client. Here is a list of several you can use, depending on your OS:
https://codex.wordpress.org/IRC#IRC_Client_Applications

If you prefer, you can use the freenode web chat interface here, instead of downloading a client: http://webchat.freenode.net/

Once configured and installed (if using a client) point it to irc.freenode.net and connect. You’ll need to choose a descriptive nickname and then “join” the #wordpress-getinvolved channel.

Please let me know if you have any questions or difficulties in joining the session on IRC. If you are on Skype, pingPing The act of sending a very small amount of data to an end point. Ping is used in computer science to illicit a response from a target server to test it’s connection. Ping is also a term used by Slack users to @ someone or send them a direct message (DM). Users might say something along the lines of “Ping me when the meeting starts.” me at jerrysarcastic, or you can email me at jerry [at] automattic [dot] com

They're one of the places where the WordPress community comes together to teach one another what they’ve learned throughout the year and share the joy. Learn more. Israel about their videos:

We still have last year’s videos. I got stuck due to the file sizes which were larger than the 2mb (or something) allowed. I can provide an Excel sheet to someone with links to each video in dropbox, with speaker name, lecture name and video, if that would help get them uploaded. I just don’t have time to figure out how to compress them all.

Can I connect someone with the excellent Miriam? 🙂

On the deck – New moderator orientation

Howdy to new mods @johnparkinson @brashrebel @squarepixel (and @natedriver when he accepts his invite to this blog) I think we are finally ready to do an orientation and get you guys going.

For the moment we don’t have a ton of videos, so there is no great rush. So how about May 30, 2014 9am PDT let’s meet up in IRC in the #wordpress-getinvolved channel for a tour of wordpress.tv and a little Q&A?

In the meantime, please check out the guide we have on approving videos which will get you familiar with that part of the process.

And if for some reason you cannot make the orientation at that time, let me know, and I’ll see if I can find a time that works for all.

How to Approve Videos – Now easier to understand!

Howdy Mod Squad!

With @myroseapple‘s help (and awesome video walk through!) we now have a new set on instructions on how to approve videos. Hopefully these will be a lot easier to follow (and refer back to) than the old documentation we used to have.

Take a look:
http://wptvmods.wordpress.com/moderator-handbook/approving-videos/

In addition to that, I would like to propose that we start building out something of a Moderator Handbook (see new widgetWidget A WordPress Widget is a small block that performs a specific function. You can add these widgets in sidebars also known as widget-ready areas on your web page. WordPress widgets were originally created to provide a simple and easy-to-use way of giving design and structure control of the WordPress theme to the user. at the top of our sidebarSidebar A sidebar in WordPress is referred to a widget-ready area used by WordPress themes to display information that is not a part of the main content. It is not always a vertical column on the side. It can be a horizontal rectangle below or above the content area, footer, header, or any where in the theme.) including this new page, and adding sections on the following:

  • Moderating Comments – What to approve, how to respond, clearing out spam, etc.
  • Internationalization/accessibilityAccessibility Accessibility (commonly shortened to a11y) refers to the design of products, devices, services, or environments for people with disabilities. The concept of accessible design ensures both “direct access” (i.e. unassisted) and “indirect access” meaning compatibility with a person’s assistive technology (for example, computer screen readers). (https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Accessibility) – What to to with non-english videos, How to moderate and approve subtitles, etc.
  • Video Standards – Policies regarding technical quality, as well as issues around GPLGPL GPL is an acronym for GNU Public License. It is the standard license WordPress uses for Open Source licensing https://wordpress.org/about/license/. The GPL is a ‘copyleft’ license https://www.gnu.org/licenses/copyleft.en.html. This means that derivative work can only be distributed under the same license terms. This is in distinction to permissive free software licenses, of which the BSD license and the MIT License are widely used examples. and community compliance.
  • Managing wordpress.tv – The nuts and bolts of how the site workswhat all the tags, categories, menus, and widgets do, how to keep the home page up to date with fresh content, etc.

I am sure there can/should be others, so if you think I’m leaving something out, please let me know. Also, if docs are your thing, you are welcome to join in and help, so give a shout out in the comments.

Team Chat Agenda May 22, 2014

FYI, I’m pretty sick today, so if possible this will be a short meeting.

Weekly Topic: Contributor recognition, .org sites

  • Profiles needs a cross-project team because the after the fact opinions on what it should do are slowing things down. Will be soliciting team members from other contrib groups and try to get buy-in on a spec.
  • Everything on my list circles back to profiles.
  • We need developers to help with camptix (making it force wordpress.orgWordPress.org The community site where WordPress code is created and shared by the users. This is where you can download the source code for WordPress core, plugins and themes as well as the central location for community conversations and organization. https://wordpress.org/ login), meetup.com api bridge to profiles (by meetup.com member ID number), spreadsheets pluginPlugin A plugin is a piece of software containing a group of functions that can be added to a WordPress website. They can extend functionality or add new features to your WordPress websites. WordPress plugins are written in the PHP programming language and integrate seamlessly with WordPress. These can be free in the WordPress.org Plugin Directory https://wordpress.org/plugins/ or can be cost-based plugin from a third-party, and probably others I’m forgetting.
  • We need people-people to help with the meetupsMeetup Meetup groups are locally-organized groups that get together for face-to-face events on a regular basis (commonly once a month). Learn more about Meetups in our Meetup Organizer Handbook. program. @chaselivingston is helping a lot, but could use some more hands (hands that are not currently embroiled in planning their WC, for the sake of everyone’s sanity).
