Greetings, WordPress.tv moderators. I’ve had email exchanges with some of you, but for those I haven’t met, hello — I’m on Editorial at WP.com and try to keep an eye on and post to the WP.tv blog periodically. My plan is to check in every few months to see what’s new, but feel free to reach out anytime (cheri@automattic.com or pingPing The act of sending a very small amount of data to an end point. Ping is used in computer science to illicit a response from a target server to test it’s connection. Ping is also a term used by Slack users to @ someone or send them a direct message (DM). Users might say something along the lines of “Ping me when the meeting starts.” me here) if you’ve got announcements or post ideas for the blog.

I’d planned to do more moderator Q&As to a) introduce you all and b) share your “best practices” for creating content for WP.tv, but we can move on from this format if no one else is interested.

That said, I still would love to gather more feedback that may be helpful for people submitting videos for review:

As moderators, do you have additional tips on creating the best content possible, to supplement the Submission Guidelines page? Feel free to leave any notes here.
Are there videos you’ve published on WP.tv that you consider exemplary? Feel free to leave links to these videos in the comments — perhaps we can showcase them in a post to illustrate what works!

Thanks Cheri for stopping by. The only thing I feel needs to change is the Audio quality of the videos. Some are just too weak and you can’t really hear the speaker that well, many have people coughing around near the camera. A well documented audio would sound so much better even if the video is crap or you can’t see the speaker. The reverb and the noise is the most annoying thing for me personally. I just tend to watch those who have good quality audio. WordPress SFO is a great example in this case.

  I agree. I’ll watch a presentation with bad video and good audio but not one with good video and bad audio.
  
  After videoing local meetupsMeetup Meetup groups are locally-organized groups that get together for face-to-face events on a regular basis (commonly once a month). Learn more about Meetups in our Meetup Organizer Handbook. and WordCamps, what I have found is that the audio is much harder to get right than video.
  
  I have recorded some local meetups with the internal mic and have had some decent results. I have a shotgun mic on order and will be doing some recordings and comparing the difference.
  
  Anyone have any experience or recommendations with audio that I could give a try?

    We kept the mic on the table of the speaker but we got lot of hiss which we kind of removed in post production. This can be tedious process for newbies. The best I have done so far is to give the wireless pin mic to the speaker (on the shirt) and record the audio with the video or separately. Perfect for audio in this way. Make sure that you keep the mic on the side where he/she turns his head most (to look to the slides on the wall) otherwise the sound will vary.

      It seems the audio depends on the room setting more than the video does. When we’re in a small room then the internal mic is not bad (when set on low) but for larger rooms (or ones with outside noise) the internal mic picks up all kinds of sounds, especially from the audience.
      
      I’ll keep trying different set-ups and it would be great to hear more of what others are doing.
      
      It would be nice to come up with a guide that could be used by WC volunteers that have little experience with audio and video.

        Thanks to you both for leaving thoughts here — sounds like a post rounding up a list of tips/tricks for improving audio could be helpful. I’ll continue to follow this thread and take a peek at other discussions so I can try to gather stuff.
        
        Another idea for a post(s) would be picking great-quality videos submitted to WP.tv and “dissecting” them — tips on what worked, talking about the type of stuff you guys mention above. If you know of videos that’d work for this, let me know.
