Got a complaint today about WC Philly videos not being up (and some allegations of favoritism since a well-known WP author’s video had already been posted and promoted). Looked around, and I can see 5 videos just fine but it turns out that the event was never added to the Browse by WordCampWordCamp WordCamps are casual, locally-organized conferences covering everything related to WordPress. They're one of the places where the WordPress community comes together to teach one another what they’ve learned throughout the year and share the joy. Learn more. menu.

I went in to add it myself, but can’t seem to add events to the menu (even though WC Philly 2012 does exist as an event). Any thoughts?

Allegations of favoritism make me sad. I am having similar trouble, and have asked Konstantin to look into it. 🙂

  So, it looks like that menu is being created by a widgetWidget A WordPress Widget is a small block that performs a specific function. You can add these widgets in sidebars also known as widget-ready areas on your web page. WordPress widgets were originally created to provide a simple and easy-to-use way of giving design and structure control of the WordPress theme to the user., and there are a bunch of settings for the widget, one of which is “Show terms assigned to at least this many posts, ” which is why Philly wasn’t showing up. It was originally a menu, but we changed it so that it would auto-update. What do you guys think about changing it back to a menu, which you can then edit?

    Ok, makes sense. I saw all of the “custom menu” widgets and saw the actual custom menu for events, and I was confused as to why they weren’t lining up. Perfect. I think the automated tool is a better solution, and once Brad has a chance to process a few more videos I’m confident it will bump over the 10-video minimum in no time.
    
    So I suggest we don’t change back to a menu. That’d be just one more thing to manage.

    I actually was messing with the taxonomyTaxonomy A taxonomy is a way to group things together. WordPress widgets were originally created to provide a simple and easy-to-use way of giving design and structure control of the WordPress theme to the user. settings some time ago. The problem I noticed at the time was that it was displaying a lot of content for old (like 2009 and 2010) camps. I set the threshold to only show a camp if it had 10 or more videos associated with the event. This cleaned out a lot of older events, which only had a few videos.
    
    The problem of course is that newer camps with less than 10 videos get hidden, which leads to torches and pitchforks apparently. 😮
    
    What would be better would be to add one more filterFilter Filters are one of the two types of Hooks https://codex.wordpress.org/Plugin_API/Hooks. They provide a way for functions to modify data of other functions. They are the counterpart to Actions. Unlike Actions, filters are meant to work in an isolated manner, and should never have side effects such as affecting global variables and output. to the widget, to let us filter by year. That way we could set up a widget to show taxonomy:events for year: 2013 with a low threshold, like 2 or more videos.
    
    With that filter, we could set up a widget for each year (one for 2013 videos, one for 2012 videos, etc.) instead of one widget that is trying to “do it all” in the sidebarSidebar A sidebar in WordPress is referred to a widget-ready area used by WordPress themes to display information that is not a part of the main content. It is not always a vertical column on the side. It can be a horizontal rectangle below or above the content area, footer, header, or any where in the theme.. It’s would help to prevent the current problem of burying newer events.
