# Opening up WordPress.tv to the World!

So, for those of you who tuned in to the office hoursOffice Hours Defined times
when the Global Community Team are in the #community-events Slack channel. If there
is anything you would like to discuss – you do not need to inform them in advance.
You are very welcome to drop into any of the Community Team Slack channels at any
time. confab [on IRC today](https://irclogs.wordpress.org/chanlog.php?channel=wordpress-events&day=2013-02-13&sort=asc),
you know that we’re talking about doing something big. VERY BIG.

> **We’re opening the uploader to the public… BOOM!**

We’re considering opening up the forward-facing uploader (similar to what WC organizers
use) for anyone to contribute video content to WordPress.tv, including tutorials,

presentations, and other educational content.  Wow. 🙂

For this merry band of moderators that kind of announcement means a lot of exciting
changes, and will also require all of your help to pull off successfully.

## Help us with submission standards

Here’s where you can help out. **We need to create good guidelines** for what can
and can’t be published, and hopefully have a draft document pulled together by the
time we meet next week.

I’ve started a new page for us to all work on, so please visit [Public Video Submission Standards](http://wptvmods.wordpress.com/public-video-submission-guidelines/)
page, and think about the following things:

 * What is there that needs to be changed?
 * Anything missing that needs to be added?
 * What should we be telling people we will (and will not) accept for submission?

Leave your thoughts in the comments on that page or in this post

Team Slack channels at any time., so I’ll voice my concerns here. I’m worried
about volume. Right now we limit the number of videos we publish per day to prevent
spamming those who subscribe to feeds. If/when we open the uploader to the public,
how many more videos will be flowing in to the queue? Will we lift our publish-
per-day limit any to account for the sudden influx of new content?

acronym for Real Simple Syndication which is a type of web feed which allows
users to access updates to online content in a standardized, computer-readable
format. This is the feed.. I imagine it’s a smaller concern when compared to
how to deal with Spam, and how to deal with all those videos! Will you be in

      * Yes that can be a concern too. Too many feeds at a time from WordPress.tv may
irritate some people. May be we can disable feeds for that categoryCategory
The 'category' taxonomy lets you group posts / content together that share
a common bond. Categories are pre-defined and broad ranging. (how?) and send
a newsletter periodically. (weekly or fortnightly) (like CodePoet sends newsletter).

         - [Eric Mann](http://eamann.com) 7:50 am _on_ February 15, 2013
         - This is something I’ll try to bring up during office hoursOffice Hours Defined
times when the Global Community Team are in the [#community-events](https://make.wordpress.org/community/tag/community-events/)
Slack channel. If there is anything you would like to discuss – you do not
need to inform them in advance. You are very welcome to drop into any of
the Community Team Slack channels at any time., but why are we so concerned
about feeds? There isn’t an explict option anywhere on WordPress.tv (that
I can find) that allows you to subscribe to a feed in the first place. Meaning
anyone who _is_ subscribed is knowledgeable enough to append /feed to a
URLURL A specific web address of a website or web page on the Internet,
such as a website’s URL www.wordpress.org and should understand they’re
getting the firehose of content. Considering there are other video sites
that allow you to subscribe in such a fashion as you get _everything_ and
they don’t set any sort of 3/4-post-per-day limit, I’m a bit confused as
to what exactly we’re trying to achive.

         - I agree, [@ericmann](https://profiles.wordpress.org/ericmann/) this should
not be a concern IMHO. One place it needs to be adjusted though is the Planet
WordPress feed that we all have as a module in the dashboard. Currently
           it’s dominated by WC videos.
         - Then again, it’s maybe not such a bad thing. That widgetWidget A WordPress
Widget is a small block that performs a specific function. You can add these
widgets in sidebars also known as widget-ready areas on your web page. WordPress
widgets were originally created to provide a simple and easy-to-use way
of giving design and structure control of the WordPress theme to the user.
never was that useful to me, or any user I know of. At least now it has
           awesome videos! 🙂

 7. Its great but I am sure there will be a lot of spam unless there is a automatic
review process.. and reject those that do not qualify certain standards. Take
into consideration that we will be spending more time reviewing “low grade” videos
while “good WC videos” might stack up.. 🙂

 11. Not sure about the spam issue for feeds but the information that could be shared
with this, IMHO, would far outweigh this issue. We would definitely need standards
for stopping spam in the videos. I would see this as a bigger issue that the feeds.
 12. Not sure about the volume, especially initially, but the WordCampWordCamp WordCamps
are casual, locally-organized conferences covering everything related to WordPress.

 17. Why we start at spam and all the other problems, those thing will only after we
start accepting public videos. If we own an umbrella we don’t wait for rain and
then only go out. Almost every WordPress website receives thousands of login attempts
and millions of spams but they do not stop blogging or close their site.
 18. Of course spam and other issues are the matter of foremost concern but more important
     is starting it up.
And of course we don’t have to start it now immediately. But
we must give it a thumbs up and start with things like drafting a internal and
public documentation/guideline and tightening the video guideline.

      * I know where you guys come from. It opens doors to many creative people for
sure. We will need to get more reviewers in this case. Just remember that each
WC video averages around 45 mins and thats a lot of time for a review. And
when it starts to get more videos uploaded, its hard to keep a check. Since
you have to like watch every second of the video to see possible “watermark”..
And its really hard to build an automated systems that reject videos. 🙂
      * But I agree on it. Lets make it public. Just concerned about possible logjam
        in near future. 🙂

      * Spam is a big fear of mine too (because it is a reality, not a possibility)
and traditionally a big problem in the wordpress.orgWordPress.org The community
site where WordPress code is created and shared by the users. This is where
you can download the source code for WordPress core, plugins and themes as

        [https://wordpress.org/](https://wordpress.org/) support forums, from speaking
to a few people I know who are mods there. I think there are two ways to keep
        this in check:
         - CAPTCHA – Which I hate to use, but is proven to be effective. The .org forums
recently added one after years of “holding out” and it has been a big help.
         - Must attach a video – Which will also weed out the bots
         - Not sure if this can be done, but Akismet for submissions (like is used
           on comments) would be HUGE.

         - Currently, it is required to attach a video file, so I’m thinking that we
might see much less spam than you’re seeing on the .org forums. Requiring
a video file attachment will really cut down/eliminate bots, according to
