I’ve just posted a laundry list of theme templates that our subcommittee identified as potentially helpful additions to the base WordCampWordCamp WordCamps are casual, locally-organized conferences covering everything related to WordPress. They're one of the places where the WordPress community comes together to teach one another what they’ve learned throughout the year and share the joy. Learn more. theme. If you’ve ever organized or attended a WordCamp, you’ve likely interacted with this theme. If you have, we’re looking for your feedback.

What kinds of information would be useful for you, as an attendee, leading up to and following the event? For organizers, what kinds of information do you want to display but don’t have the tools to do so?

I think there needs to be connection between the Speakers Page and the Sessions listings… if I have a speaker attached to a session it seems logical to me that I should be able to click a link on that session speaker’s name that takes me back to their Speaker profile.

  Great suggestion Dee. We discussed that kind of functionality. It may be outside the scope of our current task as that would require more data architecture rather than display, but we’ll add it to our discussion just the same.

    I don’t know what you’re planning, but the way it is today it seems easy just, on the session edit/add screen to add a dropdown menu with the speakers list (a list with the post type wcb_speaker) to choose from, instead an open input text field. It would be easy to link each session to its own speaker. Obviously it would be necessary to add speakers first and then the sessions. The other way round is also possible, I guess.

  I agree. Sessions, Speakers, and an actual template for a daily schedule should be tied together in some fashion. It was a pain trying to manually link each session and speaker name on the self-created table that we had to use for our schedule.

I organised 3 WordCamps in Brazil, and here it’s always needed for any event to give attendees, speakers and organisers some kind of comprobation they were there, so I wrote a very simple system using GD functions to generate PNG certificates. For us (in South America, I believe), some feature in this direction would help a lot.

It was easy to filterFilter Filters are one of the two types of Hooks https://codex.wordpress.org/Plugin_API/Hooks. They provide a way for functions to modify data of other functions. They are the counterpart to Actions. Unlike Actions, filters are meant to work in an isolated manner, and should never have side effects such as affecting global variables and output. just the selected, not selected, maybe, confirmed ones, etc. We can share the code. We also created a system for payment because it was a better choice not to use Paypall, we used a Brazilian system instead. But that’s sort of really specific. But it would be nice to have a more flexible system of payment in relation to this. And this makes me think that you should consider to find a way to give organizers more freedom to choose plugins and even the theme. I don’t know if it’s possible to cover all the needs from many different nationalities with just one theme. So I think it’s reasonable to let people at least request to install plugins or themes, there should be certain rules, obviously, like, the plugin or theme should be in the wordpress.orgWordPress.org The community site where WordPress code is created and shared by the users. This is where you can download the source code for WordPress core, plugins and themes as well as the central location for community conversations and organization. https://wordpress.org/ repository. The theme should be very easy to change the styles. The actual theme is too bloated. I had to do a lot of malabarism to make it looks the way I wanted. I had to create many rules to undo rules which I think is a very dumb thing to do :). Maybe we could use child themes? Just some ideas based on my experience.

  Ah, more thoughts, maybe the approach should be create more plugins instead of making them part of the theme? So we (organizers) can choose wich ones we want to activate?

  The system described above would have saved HOURS of spreadsheet manipulations and content loading. I agree! It would be awesome to have a proposal system where the proposal comes into the website and then is changed from submitted to approved presenter and then the information is tied to the speakers as well as sessions. I know the intricacies of this this are significant, but the amount of time that it could save every WordCampWordCamp WordCamps are casual, locally-organized conferences covering everything related to WordPress. Spoken by an organizer who just went through speaker selection myself. 🙂

I’ll see if we can put it on githubGitHub GitHub is a website that offers online implementation of git repositories that can easily be shared, copied and modified by other developers. Public repositories are free to host, private repositories require a paid subscription. GitHub introduced the concept of the ‘pull request’ where code changes done in branches by contributors can be reviewed and discussed before being merged be the repository owner. https://github.com/ now. It would also save me lots of time if we could fill the sessions and speakers biographies directly from this post-type.

The way I would approach this would be:

These can be free in the WordPress.org Plugin Directory https://wordpress.org/plugins/ or can be cost-based plugin from a third-party to connect Sessions and Speakers.
- Use of some date management plugin to add date and time to sessions. Blatant self-promotion: my “minimalistic event manager” plugin could be used for that 🙂
