# Timing for v1.5.0 and v2.0.0

A heads up on some upcoming scheduled changes:

 * WP-CLIWP-CLI WP-CLI is the Command Line Interface for WordPress, used to do administrative
   and development tasks in a programmatic way. The project page is [http://wp-cli.org/](http://wp-cli.org/)
   [https://make.wordpress.org/cli/](https://make.wordpress.org/cli/) v1.5.0 is
   slated to be released on Tuesday, January 30th. This will be the last release
   in the v1.x series, unless some critical issue necessitates a v1.5.1.
 * WP-CLI v2.x will require PHPPHP PHP (recursive acronym for PHP: Hypertext Preprocessor)
   is a widely-used open source general-purpose scripting language that is especially
   suited for web development and can be embedded into HTML. [https://www.php.net/manual/en/index.php](https://www.php.net/manual/en/index.php)
   5.4 and higher. Given current release cadence, v2.0.0 could be released in the
   May timeframe.

_Why?_ Travis CI is ending support of PHP 5.3 testing (targeting early April). I’m
not very keen to invest time into some alternate CI system solely for those still
running PHP 5.3.

If you manage WordPress installs for others and don’t already have systems for helping
them safely update PHP, you should take the time in 2018 to develop said systems.

 3. FYI: A workaround was created for GutenbergGutenberg The Gutenberg project is the
    new Editor Interface for WordPress. The editor improves the process and experience
    of creating new content, making writing rich content much simpler. It uses ‘blocks’
    to add richness rather than shortcodes, custom HTML etc.

    if required, I plan on doing it for WordPress CoreCore Core is the set of software

     * Thanks [@netweb](https://profiles.wordpress.org/netweb/). Unless there’s a really
       good, specific reason to keep PHPPHP PHP (recursive acronym for PHP: Hypertext
       Preprocessor) is a widely-used open source general-purpose scripting language
       that is especially suited for web development and can be embedded into HTML.

       5.3 support, I think this is as good of a reason as any to bump minimum.

        - The only major WP hosting platform that still defaults to PHPPHP PHP (recursive
          acronym for PHP: Hypertext Preprocessor) is a widely-used open source general-
          purpose scripting language that is especially suited for web development
          and can be embedded into HTML. [https://www.php.net/manual/en/index.php](https://www.php.net/manual/en/index.php)
          5.3 is probably CentOS 6 (still nearly 3 years of OS support left). A while
          ago, I started using the IUS repo for PHP 5.6 on CentOS 6 (best to jump to
          5.6 first before trying out PHP 7!) and it seems to work OK, though there
          were some PHP language changes between 5.3 and 5.6 that we had to fix.
        - I would suggest that when you drop PHP 5.3 support with WP-CLIWP-CLI WP-CLI

          development tasks in a programmatic way. The project page is [http://wp-cli.org/](http://wp-cli.org/)

           * Good suggestions, [@rklrkl](https://profiles.wordpress.org/rklrkl/).
           * Also worth noting that, if there’s a PHPPHP PHP (recursive acronym for
