The WordPress project currently offers access to its real-time communication platform via Slack (primary) and via Matrix (What is Matrix?) by means of a bridge.
How?
We recommend you take a minute to assess your needs:
If you contribute to a single Make team and join their weekly meetings, the dedicated chat pages on your team’s P2 might fit your need best.
If you prefer an integrated chat environment like SlackSlack Slack is a Collaborative Group Chat Platform https://slack.com/. The WordPress community has its own Slack Channel at https://make.wordpress.org/chat/., we encourage you to join Making WordPress Matrix chat directly from the browser by visiting matrix.wordpress.net. This is a pre-configured instance of the Element Web client (a Matrix-based app), so you don’t have to install additional software.
If you prefer a dedicated app, Element Web is one that has downloadable apps on many operating systems. Make sure you set the homeserver as outlined in our Element guide.
We’ve also collected a number of tips specifically for those who had previously been using Slack and are looking for similar functionality in Matrix.
Other Clients
You can also use any other Matrix client that supports SSO; as a server name you need to enter:
Homeserver: community.wordpress.org
Examples of clients include:
Desktop
Mobile
The above is not an exhaustive list, just a couple of ideas. Matrix.org lists many more clients.
FAQ
What is the server name, or home server?
Please enter the address community.wordpress.org
as the homeserver.
What is my username and password?
You need to have a user registered at wordpress.org. When you enter the server name community.wordpress.org
, it will show you a button saying something like “Login in with WordPress.orgWordPress.org The community site where WordPress code is created and shared by the users. This is where you can download the source code for WordPress core, plugins and themes as well as the central location for community conversations and organization. https://wordpress.org/”.
Clicking on it will take you to the WordPress.org login page at login.wordpress.org (please always check the URLURL A specific web address of a website or web page on the Internet, such as a website’s URL www.wordpress.org of the login form, it needs to be at wordpress.org!) unless you are already logged in.
We’ll then ask for your consent to authorize the Matrix server to access your account information. After authorizing, you’ll be logged on to the server with your WordPress.org username.
Error messages
Here is a list of error messages you might encounter with explanations and solutions.
Failed to join. You attempted to join using a room ID without providing a list of servers to join through. Room IDs are internal identifiers and cannot be used to join a room without additional information.
Explanation: Someone started a DM with you but then left the chat before you could join. Maybe the other person just DM-ed you by mistake. You could try to start a new DM with them, or just dismiss (=”Reject”) the invitation.
