architecture for all WordPress sites and its release on the plugin repository is
a big milestone. This release simplifies installation and gives developers a more
reliable way to build your own MCP functionality on top of shared canonical architecture.

## What is MCP Adapter?

MCP Adapter provides a way for WordPress sites to expose site functionality to AI
agents and harnesses via the [Model Context Protocol](https://modelcontextprotocol.org).

 * **Provides a default MCP server **– the plugin ships with a default MCP server(
endpoint: `/wp-json/mcp/mcp-adapter-default-server`) that includes three fundamental
MCP tools. This serves as a common model for the ecosystem to extend and build
upon, with options for developers to register your own tools, resources, and
   prompts.
 * **Bridges WP Abilities to MCP** – the plugin bridges WordPress’s Abilities APIAbilities
API A core WordPress API (introduced in 6.9) that creates a central registry
of capabilities, making WordPress functions discoverable and accessible to AI
agents, automation tools, and developers. Transforms WordPress from isolated
functions into a unified system. with the MCP specification, providing a standardized
way for AI agents to interact with WordPress functionality. Any publicly exposed

 * **Enables the creation of custom MCP servers **– MCP Adapter enables developers
to build custom MCP Servers for WP sites or plugins. Developers can hook into`
mcp_adapter_init` to create their own custom server for more direct or explicit
   integrations. See the [plugin docs](https://github.com/WordPress/mcp-adapter/blob/trunk/docs/guides/default-server.md)
for guidance on when to use a custom server versus extending the default server.

The plugin is focused on providing server infrastructure for MCP connections, so
it does not currently include an MCP clientMCP Client AI agents, IDEs, or assistants
that connect to MCP servers to access capabilities. or UIUI UI is an acronym for

they doing that’ and less about what they are doing. for a full, end-to-end, user-
facing agentic workflow. Please leave feedback in [the GitHub issues](https://github.com/WordPress/mcp-adapter/issues)
if you’d like to see this (or other functionality) added in a future release.

## Why a canonical plugin?

Earlier versions of the MCP Adapter were managed exclusively through the GitHubGitHub
GitHub is a website that offers online implementation of git repositories that can
easily be shared, copied and modified by other developers. Public repositories are
free to host, private repositories require a paid subscription. GitHub introduced
the concept of the ‘pull request’ where code changes done in branches by contributors
can be reviewed and discussed before being merged by the repository owner. [https://github.com/](https://github.com/)
repository and required users to either manually download and install the plugin,
or bundle it as a Composer dependency in their own code. This allowed early-adopters
to experiment and iterate alongside the Core AI team’s work, but kept installation
out of reach for most WordPress users and required plugin developers to handle dependency
updates and cross-plugin conflicts themselves.

On the other end of the spectrum, building a piece of shared canonical infrastructure
like this naturally raises the question: Why isn’t this part of core WordPress?
At the time of writing, the MCP specification itself is still in flux, with a major
breaking update having shipped [less than three months ago](https://blog.modelcontextprotocol.io/posts/2026-07-28/).
This volatility makes MCP a poor fit for inclusion in the core WordPress package
at this time, which has massive, often automated distribution, it’s own independent
release cadence, and a strong commitment to backwards-compatibility.

Keeping MCP Adapter outside of WordPress Core allows the plugin to iterate rapidly
and stay in sync with the fast pace of change in the MCP specification itself and
the broader AI ecosystem. As a canonical plugin on [WordPress.org](http://WordPress.org),
end-users and plugin developers can rely on MCP Adapter without worrying about multiple
conflicting, outdated copies. Core WordPress features, such as [plugin dependencies](https://make.wordpress.org/core/2024/03/05/introducing-plugin-dependencies-in-wordpress-6-5/)
and [conditional autoinstall from WordPress.org](https://developer.wordpress.org/plugins/wordpress-org/detailed-plugin-guidelines/#8-plugins-may-not-send-executable-code-via-third-party-systems)
allow plugins to still treat MCP Adapter as a dependency with the added benefit
of keeping AI-related functionality transparent and auditable, in line with the
Core AI Team’s [“Building Blocks” approach](https://make.wordpress.org/ai/2025/07/17/ai-building-blocks/).

## What’s new in 0.7.0?

 * Added support for the new, stateless `2026-07-28` MCP spec. Clients that request`
2025-06-18` or `2024-11-05` still connect, and are served through the `2025-11-
   25` schema.
 * Direct callable tools can request elicitation input under `2026-07-28` with `
   McpInputRequired`.
 * Default abilities register even when another plugin initializes the Abilities
   API first.

If you were already using an older version of the plugin through GitHub or Composer,
check out the [0.7.0 Migration Guide](https://github.com/WordPress/mcp-adapter/blob/trunk/docs/migration/v0.7.0.md)
to see if you need to make any changes to your integration.

## What’s next?

MCP Adapter is still experimental, and the current focus is on providing key infrastructure
while gathering feedback from developers to reach a stable v1.0 release.

You can follow progress or contribute via the [MCP Adapter plugin repo](https://github.com/WordPress/mcp-adapter).

We’re pleased to announce the release of [AI 1.4.0](https://github.com/WordPress/ai/releases/tag/1.4.0),
the latest update to the canonical plugin powering AI-powered features in WordPress.
This release introduces Markdown feeds for making WordPress content easier for AI
systems and other Markdown consumers to access, expands the Embeddings infrastructure,
and adds a new Comment Value score to Comment Moderation. It also improves Content
Translation, Type Ahead, Alt Text Generation, AI Request Logging, and several existing
developer tools.

## What’s new in 1.4.0?

### New Experiment: Markdown Feeds

The new Markdown Feeds experiment provides Markdown-formatted versions of WordPress
content alongside the existing HTMLHTML HTML is an acronym for Hyper Text Markup
Language. It is a markup language that is used in the development of web pages and
websites. and feed formats.

When enabled, sites gain a Markdown feed at `/feed/markdown/`, including the equivalent
feed URLs for other WordPress feed contexts. Individual posts and pages can also
be requested as Markdown by adding `?output_format=markdown` to their URLURL A specific
web address of a website or web page on the Internet, such as a website’s URL www.
wordpress.org. This provides a cleaner, structured representation of published content
for AI agents, language models, developer tools, and other systems that can work
more efficiently with Markdown than rendered HTML. The implementation converts WordPress
content to Markdown while preserving common structures such as headings, links,
images, lists, blockquotes, and code. Post titles, excerpts, and other feed content
are also normalized to avoid leaking HTML entities into the Markdown output.

### Comment Moderation adds a value score

Comment Moderation now evaluates how substantive and relevant a comment is to the
post where it was submitted.

When moderation runs, each analyzed comment receives a value score between 0 and
1. The score is displayed as a new column on the Comments screen alongside the existing
moderation signals. The goal is to provide an additional signal beyond toxicity
and sentiment. A comment can be perfectly civil while still adding little to the
discussion, while another may contain substantial information or meaningfully engage
with the post. Bulk comment analysis has also been updated to limit the size of
the moderation queue, helping avoid unnecessarily large processing requests.

### Expanded embeddings and vector infrastructure

AI 1.4.0 significantly expands the embeddings foundation introduced in the previous
release.

The plugin now includes a storage and CRUD layer for embedding vectors using a new`
wpai_embeddings` database table. Stored vectors can include information about the
providerProvider An AI service offering models for generation, embeddings, or other
capabilities (e.g., Anthropic, Google, OpenAI). and model used to generate them,
providing a common foundation for future semantic search, retrieval, recommendations,
and other vector-based features.

The release also introduces `Vector_Math` and `Vector_Ranker` classes for calculating
vector similarity and ranking results.

These additions are primarily developer infrastructure rather than a new end-user
experiment today, but they establish reusable building blocks for future AI features
that need to understand the semantic relationship between content. Embedding generation
has also been updated to use the latest implementation from the PHPPHP PHP (recursive
acronym for PHP: Hypertext Preprocessor) is a widely-used open source general-purpose
scripting language that is especially suited for web development and can be embedded
into HTML. [https://www.php.net/manual/en/index.php](https://www.php.net/manual/en/index.php)
AI Client.

The `generate_embeddings` helper now requires callers to specify an embedding model.
Developers should pass either a model ID or a `ModelInterface` instance. When passing
a model ID, the provider offering that model must also be specified. **_This is
a breaking change for third-party code that began using the embedding helper introduced
in earlier versions._**

### Content Translation improvements

Content Translation gains several workflow and language improvements in 1.4.0.

Nine additional default target languages are now available, and the underlying Content
Translation abilityAbility A registered, self-documenting unit of WordPress functionality
that can be discovered and invoked through multiple contexts (REST API, Command
Palette, MCP). Includes authorization and input/output specifications. can incorporate
relevant WordPress editorial guideline categories when generating translations.
If a translation request fails, editors can now retry it directly rather than closing
and restarting the workflow. The translation interface also better preserves existing
text and background colors while content is being processed. Title translation is
disabled with an explanatory notice when the title is too short to provide enough
useful context.

### Alt Text Generation understands decorative images

Alt Text Generation now integrates with the Image blockBlock Block is the abstract
term used to describe units of markup that, composed together, form the content
or layout of a webpage using the WordPress editor. The idea combines concepts of
what in the past may have achieved with shortcodes, custom HTML, and embed discovery
into a single consistent API and user experience.’s decorative-image setting. Images
explicitly marked as decorative are treated accordingly rather than being presented
as candidates for generated alternative text. This brings the AI workflow into closer
alignment with the accessibilityAccessibility Accessibility (commonly shortened
to a11y) refers to the design of products, devices, services, or environments for
people with disabilities. The concept of accessible design ensures both “direct
access” (i.e. unassisted) and “indirect access” meaning compatibility with a person’s
assistive technology (for example, computer screen readers). (https://en.wikipedia.
org/wiki/Accessibility) semantics already available in the editor.

### Type Ahead workflow improvements

Type Ahead now provides a visible loading indicator while a suggestion is being
generated, making it clearer when the feature is processing a request. The editor
also reserves space for suggestions when the caret is positioned at the end of a
paragraph, reducing layout and text-placement issues while ghost text is generated.

### AI Request Logging improvements

AI Request Logging now handles provider errors more accurately.

HTTPHTTP HTTP is an acronym for Hyper Text Transfer Protocol. HTTP is the underlying
protocol used by the World Wide Web and this protocol defines how messages are formatted
and transmitted, and what actions Web servers and browsers should take in response
to various commands. 4xx and 5xx responses from providers are recorded as errors
with their status code and message rather than being incorrectly recorded as successful
requests. Gemini text-generation requests are also categorized correctly rather
than appearing as metadata operations. These changes should make the request log
more useful when troubleshooting provider configuration or failed generations.

### Updated Abilities

Several of the general-purpose WordPress abilities introduced in earlier releases
have been renamed to better describe their behavior:

 * `core/read-content` is now `core/content-query`
 * `core/read-users` is now `core/users-query`
 * `core/read-settings` is now `core/settings-get`

The previous names continue to work as deprecated aliases for now, giving existing
integrations time to migrate. The `ai/get-post-details` ability is also deprecated.
Developers should use the single-post mode of `core/content-query` instead.

### The global “Enable AI” setting has been removed

The “Enable AI” toggle previously displayed at the top of the AI settings screen
has been removed. Features and experiments continue to be controlled individually
from the AI settings interface, eliminating the additional global toggle.

### Accessibility and workflow improvements

The release includes several fixes across existing experiments and interfaces:

 * Content Resizing now moves keyboard focus to the Accept button after content
   generation completes.
 * Content Classification suggestion pills use focus styles aligned with WordPress
coreCore Core is the set of software required to run WordPress. The Core Development
   Team builds WordPress. components.
 * Collapsible settings cards receive corrected focus styles.
 * Suggest Reply is hidden when a comment is being edited using Quick Edit.
 * Editorial Notes correctly analyzes template blocks when the editor’s “Show template”
   mode is enabled.
 * Generated summaries are inserted correctly when working in “Show template” mode.
 * Abilities Explorer no longer crashes when an ability input property supports
   multiple data types.
 * Content normalization better preserves HTML entities and text surrounding shortcodes.
 * Saving general WordPress settings no longer produces validation errors when the
   plugin’s abilities are active.

The release also includes several compatibility and performance improvements, including
cached detection of active SEO plugins and improved handling of connector approval
checks.

### Minimum WordPress version is now 7.0.3

AI 1.4.0 increases the minimum supported WordPress version to 7.0.3. **_Sites running
an earlier WordPress release should update WordPress before upgrading the AI plugin._**

### Security improvements

AI 1.4.0 includes several additional security hardening changes. Bulk Comment Moderation
now verifies that the current user has the `moderate_comments` capability before
processing a request and checks the `edit_comment` capability for each individual
comment. The release also hardens JSONJSON JSON, or JavaScript Object Notation,
is a minimal, readable format for structuring data. It is used primarily to transmit
data between a server and web application, as an alternative to XML. data parsing
within admin screens and improves the security of the WordPress Playground preview
publishing workflow by deriving pull request and commit metadata directly from the
triggering workflow run.

**_Sites using the AI plugin are encouraged to update promptly._**

the latest update to the canonical plugin powering AI-powered features in WordPress.
This release adds new editor workflows for translating content and generating slugs,
introduces explicit controls for exposing custom abilities, and expands the plugin’s
developer tools. It also includes security hardening, accessibilityAccessibility
Accessibility (commonly shortened to a11y) refers to the design of products, devices,
services, or environments for people with disabilities. The concept of accessible
design ensures both “direct access” (i.e. unassisted) and “indirect access” meaning
compatibility with a person’s assistive technology (for example, computer screen
readers). (https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Accessibility) improvements, and fixes
across several existing experiments.

## What’s new in 1.3.0?

### New Editor Experiment: Content Translation

The new Content Translation experiment lets editors translate content without leaving
the post editor.

After selecting a target language, the experiment translates supported Paragraph
and Heading blocks. Editors can also choose to translate the post title. The translated
content replaces the original content in the editor, where it can be reviewed and
adjusted before publishing.

### New Editor Experiment: Slug Generation

Slug Generation suggests concise, search-friendly permalinks based on the post title
and content.

Suggestions are available from the permalink controls and during the pre-publish
flow. Editors can review, edit, regenerate, and apply a suggested slug before publishing.
The interface also previews how manually edited text will be normalized and prevents
values that cannot produce a valid slug from being applied.

### New Admin Experiment: Custom Abilities

Version 1.3.0 introduces a single opt-in setting for exposing the plugin’s custom
WordPress Abilities through the Abilities APIAbilities API A core WordPress API (
introduced in 6.9) that creates a central registry of capabilities, making WordPress
functions discoverable and accessible to AI agents, automation tools, and developers.
Transforms WordPress from isolated functions into a unified system..

Enabling the Custom Abilities experiment registers the following abilities:

 * `ai/get-post-details`
 * `ai/get-post-terms`
 * `core/read-settings`
 * `core/read-users`
 * `core/read-content`

These abilities are no longer registered automatically. Sites or integrations already
using them must enable **Custom Abilities** under **Settings > AI > Admin Experiments**
after upgrading.

Internal AI plugin features continue to work whether or not the experiment is enabled.
The toggle controls external exposure through interfaces such as the Abilities API
and Model Context Protocol (MCP).

### New Developer Tool: Settings import and export

Administrators can now export non-sensitive AI plugin settings to a JSONJSON JSON,
or JavaScript Object Notation, is a minimal, readable format for structuring data.
It is used primarily to transmit data between a server and web application, as an
alternative to XML. file and import them on another site.

This makes it easier to move experiment and developer configurations between local,
staging, and production environments. Credentials, APIAPI An API or Application
Programming Interface is a software intermediary that allows programs to interact
with each other and share data in limited, clearly defined ways. keys, tokens, and
other sensitive values are excluded from exports and are not overwritten during
import.

Import and export controls are available from the menu on the AI settings screen.

The release also adds an AI Plugin section to Site Health, including configuration
information and status tests that can help administrators identify setup or connectivity
problems.

### Improved Content Classification

Content Classification now produces more relevant categoryCategory The 'category'

context, distinguishing between broad categories and specific tags, and filtering
out low-confidence results.

The update also introduces three filters for sites that need more control over classification:

 * `wpai_content_classification_available_terms`
 * `wpai_content_classification_min_confidence`
 * `wpai_content_classification_candidate_pool_size`

These filters can be used to customize the candidate terms supplied to the model,
adjust the minimum confidence required for a suggestion, and control the size of
the candidate pool.

### New developer extension points

Version 1.3.0 adds per-abilityAbility A registered, self-documenting unit of WordPress
functionality that can be discovered and invoked through multiple contexts (REST
API, Command Palette, MCP). Includes authorization and input/output specifications.
filters for customizing system instructions, assembled prompts, and prompt builders
without forking the plugin.

These extension points allow developers to modify prompts, providerProvider An AI
service offering models for generation, embeddings, or other capabilities (e.g.,
Anthropic, Google, OpenAI). or model preferences, request options, and other ability-
specific behavior while preserving the plugin’s default implementation.

The release also adds:

 * A public `WordPress\AI\log_ai_request()` API, allowing MCP servers and direct
ability consumers to record activity in the AI Request Log.
 * Support for custom providers in the Abilities Explorer provider filterFilter
Filters are one of the two types of Hooks [https://codex.wordpress.org/Plugin_API/Hooks](https://codex.wordpress.org/Plugin_API/Hooks).
They provide a way for functions to modify data of other functions. They are
the counterpart to Actions. Unlike Actions, filters are meant to work in an isolated
manner, and should never have side effects such as affecting global variables
   and output..
 * Origin-based Abilities Explorer statistics, ensuring custom-provider abilities

 * Alphabetical ordering by display name for collections returned by `core/read-
   users`.

### Security improvements

This release includes several changes to strengthen how the plugin handles generated
content, bulk operations, and externally supplied image URLs.

Updates include:

 * Additional sanitization for content sent to or rendered from a large language
   model.
 * Nonce verification before bulk alt text and summary generation.
 * Validation that custom image URLs are public, use an allowed image type, and
do not redirect to a different unverified location.
 * Limits for custom image downloads, including configurable MIME types, timeouts,
   and maximum file sizes.
 * A new `wpai_bulk_action_max_items` filter for controlling the number of items
   processed in one bulk request.

Sites using the AI plugin are encouraged to update promptly.

### Accessibility and workflow improvements

AI 1.3.0 includes several improvements to keyboard navigation, focus management,
and editor feedback:

 * Focus now moves predictably when generating, accepting, or dismissing Content
   Classification suggestions.
 * Generated title and reply fields receive focus when their content is ready.
 * The Suggest Reply tone menu supports Escape dismissal and restores focus appropriately.
 * Provider and model details in the AI Request Log are more accessible to keyboard

   interfaces, preventing duplicate requests.
 * The experiments list has been reorganized, with related admin experiments grouped
together and editor experiments sorted alphabetically.

The release also fixes several workflow issues:

 * Completed bulk actions no longer run again when a list is sorted or paginated.

### Upgrade notes

#### Custom Abilities must be enabled

Integrations using `ai/get-post-details`, `ai/get-post-terms`, `core/read-settings`,`
core/read-users`, or `core/read-content` must enable the new Custom Abilities experiment
after upgrading.

#### Post meta keys now use the `wpai_` prefix

The following meta keys have been renamed:

 * `ai_generated` to `wpai_generated`
 * `ai_generated_summary` to `wpai_generated_summary`
 * `ai_note` to `wpai_note`

The plugin migrates its own stored data, but third-party code that references these
keys directly should be updated.

#### Public APIs have been deprecated

The `AI_Service` class and `get_ai_service()` helper are deprecated and will be
removed in the next major releaseMajor Release A set of releases or versions having
the same major version number may be collectively referred to as “X.Y” -- for example
version 5.2.x to refer to versions 5.2, 5.2.1, and all other versions in the 5.2.(
five dot two dot) branch of that software. Major Releases often are the introduction
of new major features and functionality.. Developers should use `wp_ai_client_prompt()`
directly.

The unused `wpai_meta_description_result_temperature` filter is also deprecated
and is scheduled for removal in the next release.

#### Plugin data is removed when the plugin is deleted

Deleting the AI plugin now removes its settings, transients, scheduled events, and
request-log table. Deactivating the plugin does not remove this data.

#### Additional updates

The preferred models for the three default providers have been updated to more recent
models. The plugin also no longer sets custom temperature values on its requests,
improving compatibility with models that do not support those parameters.

AI 1.3.0 has been tested with WordPress 7.1 and includes updated WordPress packages,
development tools, testing dependencies, and GitHubGitHub GitHub is a website that

We’re pleased to announce the release of [AI 1.2.0](https://github.com/WordPress/ai/releases/tag/1.2.0),
the latest update to the canonical plugin powering AI-powered features in WordPress.
This release introduces a new Suggest Reply experiment, bulk Content Summary generation,
and two new read-only Abilities. It also simplifies the plugin’s settings interface
and improves Type-ahead Text, Connector Approvals, accessibilityAccessibility Accessibility(

## What’s new in 1.2.0?

### New Experiment: Suggest Reply

AI 1.2.0 introduces a new Suggest Reply experiment for comment moderation. When
enabled, comment moderators can generate a contextual reply from the Comments administration
screen or the Activity dashboard widgetWidget A WordPress Widget is a small block
that performs a specific function. You can add these widgets in sidebars also known
as widget-ready areas on your web page. WordPress widgets were originally created
to provide a simple and easy-to-use way of giving design and structure control of
the WordPress theme to the user.. Suggestions can incorporate the comment, its parent
post, and optional editorial guidelines.

The experiment supports:

 * Friendly, professional, and casual reply tones (friendly as default)
 * Optional instructions or editorial guidelines
 * Inserting the suggestion directly into WordPress’s inline reply form

Generated replies remain suggestions for a moderator to review, edit, and choose
whether to publish. This helps sites respond more efficiently while keeping people
in control of the conversation.

### Generate content summaries in bulk

Content Summarization can now be run across multiple posts or pages from the corresponding
list table. After selecting content, users can choose the new `Generate Summary`
bulk action. WordPress processes the selected items and creates or updates their
AI-generated summaries without requiring each item to be opened individually in
the editor.

This makes Content Summarization more practical for established sites that want
to add summaries to an existing content library.

### New `core/read-content` AbilityAbility A registered, self-documenting unit of WordPress functionality that can be discovered and invoked through multiple contexts (REST API, Command Palette, MCP). Includes authorization and input/output specifications.

AI 1.2.0 adds a new `core/read-content` Ability, providing structured, read-only
access to WordPress content through the Abilities APIAbilities API A core WordPress
API (introduced in 6.9) that creates a central registry of capabilities, making
WordPress functions discoverable and accessible to AI agents, automation tools,
and developers. Transforms WordPress from isolated functions into a unified system..
The default response remains intentionally lean, while permissions and per-post
access checks determine which content and fields are available.

The Ability supports:

 * Retrieving a single post by ID
 * Retrieving a single post by post type and slug
 * Querying collections of posts
 * Filtering by status, author, parent, or included post IDs
 * Pagination and field selection
 * Explicit opt-in access to heavier or raw content fields

This provides a useful foundation for assistants, agents, automation tools, and
other integrations that need to securely discover and read WordPress content.

### New `core/read-users` Ability

This release also introduces the `core/read-users` Ability. It can retrieve a single
user by ID, email address, login, or nicename, or return a filtered and paginated
collection of users. Collection queries can be filtered by role, published content,
included user IDs, and other supported fields. Lean fields are returned by default.
Sensitive identifiers and fields must be explicitly requested and remain protected
by WordPress permissions.

Together, `core/read-content`, `core/read-users`, and the previously introduced `
core/read-settings` Ability expand the plugin’s reference implementation for permission-
aware access to WordPress data.

### Simpler settings with optional advanced controls

AI 1.2.0 reorganizes configuration options to make the primary settings experience
more approachable. A new `Advanced settings` option is available from the Developer
Tools menu. It is disabled by default, leaving each Feature or Experiment with its
primary on/off control.

When Advanced settings are enabled, additional options such as providerProvider

e.g., Anthropic, Google, OpenAI). selection, model selection, taxonomyTaxonomy A
taxonomy is a way to group things together. In WordPress, some common taxonomies

strategies, or suggestion limits become available where supported. This keeps common
configuration focused while preserving detailed controls for developers and advanced
site administrators.

### Clearer Connector Approval guidance

When Connector Approvals are enabled but no AI connectors have been approved, the
plugin now displays an inline notice explaining that the AI plugin must be approved
before it can use an AI provider connector.

Previously, administrators might not discover the missing approval until they attempted
to use an AI feature and encountered an error. The new notice makes the required
action visible while configuring the plugin.

### Type-ahead Text improvements

The Type-ahead Text experiment received several refinements in this release:

 * Type Ahead assets no longer load on the site’s front end.
 * Dismissing a suggestion with the Escape key no longer immediately triggers another
   request.
 * Ghost text placement has been improved.
 * Stale suggestions no longer overlap placeholders in empty blocks.

### Accessibility and workflow refinements

Additional interface and workflow improvements include:

 * Keyboard focus is restored more reliably after saving AI settings.
 * AI Home feature-card images now include descriptive alternative text for screen
   reader users.
 * Content Summary detection now works when the blockBlock Block is the abstract
term used to describe units of markup that, composed together, form the content
or layout of a webpage using the WordPress editor. The idea combines concepts
of what in the past may have achieved with shortcodes, custom HTML, and embed
discovery into a single consistent API and user experience. is nested inside
   another block.
 * Initial settings are registered before `core/read-settings` creates its settings
   snapshot.
 * Explicit `show_in_abilities` values are respected while remaining compatible
with future WordPress coreCore Core is the set of software required to run WordPress.
The Core Development Team builds WordPress. support.

These changes continue the project’s focus on making AI workflows predictable, accessible,
and compatible with evolving WordPress APIs.

### Developer and extensibility updates

AI 1.2.0 introduces the `wp_ai_client_default_request_timeout` filterFilter Filters
are one of the two types of Hooks [https://codex.wordpress.org/Plugin_API/Hooks](https://codex.wordpress.org/Plugin_API/Hooks).
They provide a way for functions to modify data of other functions. They are the
counterpart to Actions. Unlike Actions, filters are meant to work in an isolated
manner, and should never have side effects such as affecting global variables and
output., allowing developers to customize the timeout used for long-running AI client
requests. This release applies the filter to image generation only, while exposing
it for application to other features in the future. The default remains 90 seconds,
but sites using slower providers or infrastructure can now increase or otherwise
adjust that value.

The release also includes end-to-end test improvements, pinned npm dependencies,
updated WordPress UIUI UI is an acronym for User Interface - the layout of the page
the user interacts with. Think ‘how are they doing that’ and less about what they
are doing. packages, new and updated screenshots, and documentation describing how
contributors can become plugin maintainers.

## What’s next in 1.3.0?

Work is already underway on additional Features, Experiments, and infrastructure
improvements planned for [1.3.0](https://github.com/WordPress/ai/milestone/22) and
future releases, including:

 * Updated Experiment: [Integrate Refine from Notes with Real-time Collaboration](https://github.com/WordPress/ai/issues/324)

We’re pleased to announce the release of [AI 1.1.0](https://github.com/WordPress/ai/releases/tag/1.1.0),
the latest update to the canonical plugin powering AI-powered features in WordPress.
This release introduces two new experiments, Type-ahead Text and Key Encryption,
while continuing to improve content workflows, comment moderation, developer settings,
Abilities APIAbilities API A core WordPress API (introduced in 6.9) that creates
a central registry of capabilities, making WordPress functions discoverable and
accessible to AI agents, automation tools, and developers. Transforms WordPress
from isolated functions into a unified system. integration, and overall interface
polish.

## What’s new in 1.1.0?

### New Experiment: Type-ahead Text

AI 1.1.0 introduces a new Type-ahead Text experiment for the blockBlock Block is
the abstract term used to describe units of markup that, composed together, form
the content or layout of a webpage using the WordPress editor. The idea combines
concepts of what in the past may have achieved with shortcodes, custom HTML, and
embed discovery into a single consistent API and user experience. editor.

When enabled, Type-ahead Text can suggest inline ghost text at the end of paragraph
blocks while a user is writing. It can also be triggered manually within supported
blocks, giving writers a lightweight way to explore AI-assisted continuation without
leaving the editor flow.

The experiment supports:

 * Context-aware suggestions based on surrounding content
 * Manual triggering within supported blocks
 * Keyboard controls for accepting or dismissing suggestions
 * ProviderProvider An AI service offering models for generation, embeddings, or
other capabilities (e.g., Anthropic, Google, OpenAI). and model overrides through
   developer settings
 * Integration with site Guidelines (aka Knowledge)

This brings a familiar AI writing pattern directly into WordPress while keeping
it experimental, opt-in, and available for community testing.

### New Experiment: Key Encryption

This release also introduces a Key Encryption experiment focused on improving how
AI Connector APIAPI An API or Application Programming Interface is a software intermediary
that allows programs to interact with each other and share data in limited, clearly
defined ways. keys are stored.

When enabled, AI Connector API keys are encrypted before being stored in the database
and decrypted when needed for use. If the experiment is disabled, global AI functionality
is turned off, or the plugin is deactivated, keys are restored so sites are not
left in an unusable state.

This experiment is especially relevant as WordPress continues exploring Connectors
and AI provider integrations. It gives the project a practical place to test API
key handling approaches and gather real-world feedback before similar patterns are
considered elsewhere.

### Smarter content readiness checks

AI 1.1.0 improves when content-based features become available.

Features that rely on post content are now disabled until minimum content thresholds
are met. The release also improves those checks by using locale-aware word or character
counting, helping content workflows behave more reliably across languages.

This affects workflows such as:

 * Content Resizing
 * Content Summarization
 * Content Classification

These updates should reduce confusing states where an AI action appears available
before there is enough content to produce a useful result.

### Comment Moderation improvements

The Comment Moderation experiment continues to get more control and refinement.

AI 1.1.0 adds a setting that lets site owners choose whether guest comments should
be analyzed automatically. This setting defaults to enabled, but can be turned off
to avoid running AI sentiment or toxicity analysis on anonymous comments.

This is useful for sites that receive a high volume of guest or spam comments and
want more control over where AI analysis is applied. The release also skips comment
analysis and moderation for comments already marked as spam or trashTrash Trash
in WordPress is like the Recycle Bin on your PC or Trash in your Macintosh computer.
Users with the proper permission level (administrators and editors) have the ability
to delete a post, page, and/or comments. When you delete the item, it is moved to
the trash folder where it will remain for 30 days., reducing unnecessary AI requests.

### New `core/read-settings` AbilityAbility A registered, self-documenting unit of WordPress functionality that can be discovered and invoked through multiple contexts (REST API, Command Palette, MCP). Includes authorization and input/output specifications.

AI 1.1.0 adds a new `core/read-settings` Ability.

This read-only ability exposes eligible site settings through the Abilities API,
providing another example of how WordPress capabilities can be made available to
AI-powered workflows in a structured, permission-aware way. The ability requires
appropriate permissions and supports filtering returned settings, creating a useful
foundation for future admin, assistant, and developer workflows.

### Workflow and interface refinements

AI 1.1.0 also includes several workflow and user experience improvements:

 * Editorial Notes now prompt users to save after running.
 * Editorial Note loading indicators are scoped to the active block.
 * Editorial Updates only appear when pending notes are linked to the current blocks.
 * Title Generation button text and loading states are now more consistent.
 * Content Classification term suggestions persist more reliably and recover better
   when term assignment fails.
 * Experiment modal warnings now use the standard Notice component.
 * Settings screen snackbars no longer overlap the main content.
 * AI Request Logs now use a fixed 30-day window so summary cards and the logs table
   match.
 * Documentation now more clearly notes that the plugin has targeted support only
   for the Block Editor.

### Developer and extensibility updates

This release includes several improvements for developers and advanced site builders:

 * A new `wpai_has_image_generation_support` filterFilter Filters are one of the
   two types of Hooks [https://codex.wordpress.org/Plugin_API/Hooks](https://codex.wordpress.org/Plugin_API/Hooks).
They provide a way for functions to modify data of other functions. They are
the counterpart to Actions. Unlike Actions, filters are meant to work in an isolated
manner, and should never have side effects such as affecting global variables
and output. allows third parties to declare Image Generation support, including
cases where authentication does not rely on an API key.
 * Abilities Explorer schema output now handles non-ASCII characters more readably.
 * Ability input handling was improved so omitted input can still allow schema defaults
   to apply.
 * Scalar input schema validation is now supported in Abilities Explorer.

These changes help make the plugin a stronger reference implementation for others
building AI-powered WordPress features.

## What’s next in 1.2.0?

Work is already underway on additional Features, Experiments, and infrastructure
improvements planned for [1.2.0](https://github.com/WordPress/ai/milestone/19) and
future releases, including:

 * Updated Experiment: [Integrate Refine from Notes with Real-time Collaboration](https://github.com/WordPress/ai/issues/324)
 * New Experiment: [Suggest Replies](https://github.com/WordPress/ai/pull/724)
 * New Experiment: [Content Translations](https://github.com/WordPress/ai/pull/747)
 * New Experiment: [Integrate with Gutenberg’s experimental Media Editor](https://github.com/WordPress/ai/issues/325)
   including [focus-aware crop suggestions](https://github.com/WordPress/ai/issues/238)
 * New Experiment: [Promoted AI Provider Connectors](https://github.com/WordPress/ai/issues/502)
 * New Experiment: Content Provenance tracking for [text](https://github.com/WordPress/ai/pull/294)
   and [images](https://github.com/WordPress/ai/pull/302) via [C2PA](https://c2pa.org/)
while [detecting C2PA manifests on upload](https://github.com/WordPress/ai/issues/421)

These concepts are still exploratory, but they help test how AI could support real
workflows across WordPress.

We’re pleased to announce the release of [AI 1.0.0](https://github.com/WordPress/ai/releases/tag/1.0.0),
the latest update to the canonical plugin powering AI-powered features in WordPress.
This release marks an important milestone for the plugin. Since the first AI Experiments
release in late 2025, contributors across the WordPress ecosystem have helped test,
refine, and expand a growing set of AI capabilities built directly on top of the
[AI Building Blocks initiative](https://make.wordpress.org/ai/2025/07/17/ai-building-blocks/).
With 1.0.0, the plugin continues evolving from an experimental sandbox into a more
mature reference implementation for AI-powered workflows in WordPress.

AI 1.0.0 introduces new observability and governance tooling, expands moderation
and media workflows, improves onboarding and providerProvider An AI service offering

## What’s new in 1.0.0?

### New Experiment: Request Logging

![](https://make.wordpress.org/ai/files/2026/05/ai-request-logs-737x1024.png)

This release introduces a new Request Logging experiment that provides observability
into AI activity across WordPress. Once enabled, administrators can review AI requests
and responses generated through coreCore Core is the set of software required to
run WordPress. The Core Development Team builds WordPress., plugins, and themes
to help teams better understand:

 * What AI operations are being triggered
 * Which features and providers are being used
 * How requests are performing
 * Potential debugging or workflow issues

This creates a foundation for improved transparency and operational awareness as
AI usage within WordPress grows.

### New Experiment: Connector Approvals

![](https://make.wordpress.org/ai/files/2026/05/connector-approvals-882x1024.png)

AI 1.0.0 also introduces a new Connector Approvals experiment focused on governance
and administrative control.

This experiment allows site administrators to determine which plugins can access
configured AI connectors. As more plugins begin integrating with AI services, Connector
Approvals provides an additional layer of oversight around how provider credentials
and AI capabilities are shared across a site.

This continues the broader focus on giving users and site owners flexibility and
control over how AI integrations operate inside WordPress.

### Expanded Comment Moderation Workflows

![](https://make.wordpress.org/ai/files/2026/05/activity-widget-sentiment-toxicity.
png)

The Comment Moderation experiment introduced in previous releases continues to evolve
in AI 1.0.0. This release adds:

 * Sorting and filtering in the Comments screen by Sentiment and Toxicity
 * Sentiment and Toxicity labeling directly in the Activity dashboard widgetWidget
A WordPress Widget is a small block that performs a specific function. You can
add these widgets in sidebars also known as widget-ready areas on your web page.
WordPress widgets were originally created to provide a simple and easy-to-use
way of giving design and structure control of the WordPress theme to the user.
 * Improved handling for comments without moderation metadata
 * Better failed-analysis indicators when moderation requests fail

These updates help moderators more quickly identify problematic discussions and
better understand the overall tone of conversations happening across their sites.

### AI Alt Text in the Media Editor

AI-powered alt text generation is now integrated directly into GutenbergGutenberg
The Gutenberg project is the new Editor Interface for WordPress. The editor improves
the process and experience of creating new content, making writing rich content
much simpler. It uses ‘blocks’ to add richness rather than shortcodes, custom HTML
etc. [https://wordpress.org/gutenberg/](https://wordpress.org/gutenberg/)’s experimental
media editor workflow. This builds on the plugin’s existing media accessibility
tooling by making AI-generated alt text suggestions more directly available while
editing media items. The release also includes several improvements to alt text
and media generation handling, including:

 * Better error handling when no AI provider is configured
 * Improved notices and onboarding guidance
 * Fixes for decorative image workflows
 * Additional handling for standalone image generation

### Editorial Workflow Refinements

This release continues refining AI-assisted editorial workflows introduced in earlier
versions. To better reflect real-world publishing terminology:

 * “Review Notes” has been renamed to “Editorial Notes”
 * “Refine from Notes” has been renamed to “Editorial Updates”

Additional improvements include:

 * Disabling Content Summarization until content reaches a minimum length
 * Reactive updates for Title Generation and Content Classification based on current
   editor state
 * Refined loading states and interface polish across multiple AI workflows

### Improved Provider Handling and Onboarding

AI 1.0.0 includes significant improvements around provider detection, onboarding,
and error messaging. When users attempt to trigger AI functionality without a configured
provider, the plugin now surfaces more actionable guidance directing users toward
configuring an AI Connector. Additional improvements include:

 * Better handling when previously configured providers are no longer available
 * More specific provider-related error messages
 * Deduplicated provider APIAPI An API or Application Programming Interface is a
software intermediary that allows programs to interact with each other and share
data in limited, clearly defined ways. requests in developer mode
 * Improved handling of feature-specific provider configuration states

These updates help create a smoother onboarding and troubleshooting experience for
both end users and developers.

### Accessibility and Internationalization Improvements

Accessibility and internationalization continue to be core priorities throughout
the plugin. AI 1.0.0 includes:

 * Improved keyboard focus visibility across multiple interfaces
 * RTL (right-to-left) rendering fixes throughout the admin UIUI UI is an acronym
for User Interface - the layout of the page the user interacts with. Think ‘how
are they doing that’ and less about what they are doing.
 * Expanded runtime translation loading
 * Additional fully translatable user-facing text

## What’s next in 1.1.0?

Work is already underway on additional Features, Experiments, and infrastructure
improvements planned for [1.1.0](https://github.com/WordPress/ai/milestone/18) and
future releases, including:

 * Updated Experiment: [Integrate Refine from Notes with Real-time Collaboration](https://github.com/WordPress/ai/issues/324)
 * New Experiment: [Type Ahead Suggestions](https://github.com/WordPress/ai/pull/151)
 * New Experiment: [Integrate with Gutenberg’s experimental Media Editor](https://github.com/WordPress/ai/issues/325)
   including [focus-aware crop suggestions](https://github.com/WordPress/ai/issues/238)
 * New Experiment: [Promoted AI Provider Connectors](https://github.com/WordPress/ai/issues/502)
 * New Experiment: [AI Playground](https://github.com/WordPress/ai/issues/32)
 * New Experiment: Content Provenance tracking for [text](https://github.com/WordPress/ai/pull/294)

while [detecting C2PA manifests on upload](https://github.com/WordPress/ai/issues/421)

These concepts are still exploratory, but they help test how AI could support real
workflows across WordPress.

We’re pleased to announce the release of [AI 0.9.0](https://github.com/WordPress/ai/releases/tag/0.9.0),
the latest update to the canonical plugin powering AI-powered features in WordPress.
This release introduces two new Experiments focused on content workflows and moderation,
adds a new WP-CLIWP-CLI WP-CLI is the Command Line Interface for WordPress, used
to do administrative and development tasks in a programmatic way. The project page
is [http://wp-cli.org/](http://wp-cli.org/) [https://make.wordpress.org/cli/](https://make.wordpress.org/cli/)
command for bulk alt text generation, and continues refining the plugin’s administration
experience. This release also includes a new Developer Mode model-selection experience,
improvements to image generation workflows, updates to the AI settings page UIUI
UI is an acronym for User Interface - the layout of the page the user interacts
with. Think ‘how are they doing that’ and less about what they are doing., and additional
developer tooling and documentation enhancements.

## What’s new in 0.9.0?

### New Experiment: Comment Moderation

![Comment list screen in the WordPress admin showing the comment sentiment and toxicity
information](https://make.wordpress.org/ai/files/2026/05/comment-moderation-1-1024x696.

AI 0.9.0 introduces a new Comment Moderation Experiment that can automatically evaluate
comments using sentiment analysis and toxicity detection. This Experiment is designed
to help site owners reduce spam, harassment, and low-quality engagement by using
AI-powered moderation signals during the comment review process. The feature can
assist moderators by flagging potentially problematic comments before they are published
and sending them to moderation for further review.

### New Experiment: Content Resizing

![Content Resizing block toolbar controls showing the Shorten, Expand and Rephrase
options](https://make.wordpress.org/ai/files/2026/05/Content-Resizing-buttons-1024x476.

![Content Resizing modal that shows after a content resizing action has been taken,
showing the original content and the new content](https://make.wordpress.org/ai/
files/2026/05/Content-resizing-modal-1024x856.png)

This release also adds a new Content Resizing Experiment that allows users to shorten,
expand, or rephrase selected content directly within the post editor. The Experiment
is intended to support common editorial workflows like:

 * Shortening long paragraphs
 * Expanding thin content
 * Rephrasing copy for clarity or tone
 * Iterating on draft content without leaving the post editor

This continues the plugin’s focus on bringing lightweight editorial AI workflows
directly into WordPress.

### Developer Mode model controls

![AI plugin settings page showing the new Developer Tools menu with the Model selection
option in that menu](https://make.wordpress.org/ai/files/2026/05/Developer-mode-
settings.png)

![AI settings page showing developer settings for Title Generation, allowing the
selection of a specific provider and model](https://make.wordpress.org/ai/files/
2026/05/Provider-and-Model-selection-1024x444.png)

AI 0.9.0 adds a new Developer Mode settings toggle on the AI settings page that
allows developers to configure the desired providerProvider An AI service offering
models for generation, embeddings, or other capabilities (e.g., Anthropic, Google,
OpenAI). and model on a per-feature basis.

This makes it easier to:

 * Compare model behavior between features
 * Test different providers during development
 * Optimize workflows for cost, speed, or output quality
 * Experiment with local and hosted models

The feature is especially useful for developers building or extending AI-powered
experiences within WordPress.

### AI settings page improvements

AI 0.9.0 includes several refinements to the plugin administration experience. The
AI settings page has been updated to use `@wordpress/ui` components and now features
a more compact layout, including moving the global AI toggle into the page headerHeader
The header of your site is typically the first thing people will experience. The
masthead or header art located across the top of your page is part of the look and
feel of your website. It can influence a visitor’s opinion about your content and
you/ your organization’s brand. It may also look different on different screen sizes.
alongside an infotip. These updates continue the ongoing effort to align the plugin
more closely with modern WordPress administrative UI patterns.

### Image generation improvements

This release also includes several updates to image generation workflows. AI-generated
images are now saved using descriptive, “slugified” filenames derived from the post
title or generation prompt instead of generic timestamp-based filenames. The plugin
also now applies image generation guidelines directly within prompts instead of
relying on system instructions. Together, these updates improve both media organization
and image generation consistency.

### WP-CLI support for bulk alt text generation

This release introduces a new WP-CLI command for bulk alt text generation: `wp ai
alt-text generate`. The new command allows developers and site administrators to
generate alt text programmatically across larger media libraries and automation
workflows.

This is particularly useful for:

 * Large existing media libraries
 * Batch-processing accessibilityAccessibility Accessibility (commonly shortened
to a11y) refers to the design of products, devices, services, or environments
for people with disabilities. The concept of accessible design ensures both “
direct access” (i.e. unassisted) and “indirect access” meaning compatibility
with a person’s assistive technology (for example, computer screen readers). (

 * CI/CD and migrationMigration Moving the code, database and media files for a
website site from one server to another. Most typically done when changing hosting
   companies. workflows
 * Editorial automation pipelines

### Additional improvements and fixes

Other notable improvements in AI 0.9.0 include:

 * Basic styles for the Content Summary blockBlock Block is the abstract term used
to describe units of markup that, composed together, form the content or layout
of a webpage using the WordPress editor. The idea combines concepts of what in
the past may have achieved with shortcodes, custom HTML, and embed discovery
into a single consistent API and user experience.
 * Updates to the Content Summary Experiment block structure using a Group variation
   block
 * Better RTL support in the AbilityAbility A registered, self-documenting unit
of WordPress functionality that can be discovered and invoked through multiple
contexts (REST API, Command Palette, MCP). Includes authorization and input/output
specifications. schema JSONJSON JSON, or JavaScript Object Notation, is a minimal,
readable format for structuring data. It is used primarily to transmit data between
a server and web application, as an alternative to XML. viewer
 * Additional localization coverage for user-facing error strings

These updates improve consistency across AI workflows, refine the administration
experience, and continue strengthening the plugin’s developer tooling and reliability.

## What’s next in 1.0.0?

Work is already underway on additional Features, Experiments, and infrastructure
improvements planned for [1.0.0](https://github.com/WordPress/ai/milestone/7) and
future releases, including:

 * Onboarding flows as necessary in support of the [“Try AI” callout](https://core.trac.wordpress.org/ticket/64711)
   in WordPress 7.0 (see [#183](https://github.com/WordPress/ai/issues/183), [#428](https://github.com/WordPress/ai/issues/428),
   and [#457](https://github.com/WordPress/ai/issues/457))
 * Updated Experiment: [Integrate Refine from Notes with Real-time Collaboration](https://github.com/WordPress/ai/issues/324)

   including [focus-aware crop suggestions](https://github.com/WordPress/ai/issues/238)
 * New Experiment: [AI Request Logging](https://github.com/WordPress/ai/pull/437)
 * New Experiment: [Connector Usage Approvals](https://github.com/WordPress/ai/pull/467)
 * New Experiment: [Promoted AI Provider Connectors](https://github.com/WordPress/ai/issues/502)
 * New Experiment: [AI Playground](https://github.com/WordPress/ai/issues/32)
 * New Experiment: Content Provenance tracking for [text](https://github.com/WordPress/ai/pull/294)
   and [images](https://github.com/WordPress/ai/pull/302) via [C2PA](https://c2pa.org/)
while [detecting C2PA manifests on upload](https://github.com/WordPress/ai/issues/421)

These concepts are still exploratory, but they help test how AI could support real
workflows across WordPress.

We’re pleased to announce the release of [AI 0.8.0](https://github.com/WordPress/ai/releases/tag/0.8.0),
the latest update to the canonical plugin powering AI-powered features in WordPress.
This release introduces new editorial workflows, deeper integration with [Guidelines](https://make.wordpress.org/ai/2026/03/23/guidelines-lands-in-gutenberg-22-7/),
and improvements to the overall admin experience. This release also promotes Image
Generation and Editing to a full Feature and introduces dashboard widgets that surface
AI capabilities and Connectors information directly in the WordPress dashboard.

## What’s new in 0.8.0?

### New Experiment: Refine from Notes

This release introduces a new Refine from Notes experiment that automatically applies
editorial feedback to your content.

Instead of manually reviewing Notes and making edits one by one, this workflow lets
you leverage AI to:

 * Generate Review Notes on your content (using the previously released Review Notes
   experiment)
 * Automatically apply changes from those Notes to post content
 * Refine posts more efficiently with fewer manual edits

This supports more streamlined editorial workflows and moves toward more agent-like
content refinement experiences.

### New AI Dashboard Widgets

![](https://make.wordpress.org/ai/files/2026/04/ai-status-widget-configuring.png)

![](https://make.wordpress.org/ai/files/2026/04/ai-status-widget-configured.png)

AI 0.8.0 introduces the first set of AI dashboard widgets, bringing AI insights
and capabilities directly into the WordPress dashboard.

This includes:

 * AI Status widgetWidget A WordPress Widget is a small block that performs a specific
function. You can add these widgets in sidebars also known as widget-ready areas
on your web page. WordPress widgets were originally created to provide a simple
and easy-to-use way of giving design and structure control of the WordPress theme
to the user. showing plugin onboarding steps, then Connector and Feature / Experiment
   configurations
 * AI Capabilities widget highlighting available Abilities and configured Connector
   model capabilities
 * A new extensibleExtensible This is the ability to add additional functionality
to the code. Plugins extend the WordPress core software. framework for registering
   additional dashboard widgets

![](https://make.wordpress.org/ai/files/2026/04/ai-capabilities-widget.png)

These widgets improve discoverability and help site administrators quickly understand
what AI capabilities are available on their site.

### Promoted Feature: Image Generation and Editing

Image Generation and Editing has been promoted from an Experiment to a Feature.

That means:

 * It’s now considered stable and ready for broader use
 * It appears in the Features section of the AI settings screen
 * It continues to support supported image-capable models

As part of this transition, references to older DALL·E models have been removed
in favor of newer image generation models, including `gpt-image-2`.

### Respect Guidelines Automatically

AI abilities can now integrate with [Gutenberg’s Guidelines experiment](https://make.wordpress.org/ai/2026/03/23/guidelines-lands-in-gutenberg-22-7/),
allowing generated content to respect site-wide editorial standards.

This enables:

 * Consistent tone and style
 * Alignment with editorial expectations
 * More predictable AI-generated outputs

When Guidelines are configured, supported abilities automatically use them as part
of their generation workflow.

### Improved Title Generation Workflow

Title Generation now uses a modal interface, allowing users to preview and refine
suggestions before applying them to a post.

This update makes the workflow more flexible and safer by allowing:

 * Multiple regeneration attempts
 * Inline editing before applying changes
 * Better control over final output

Additionally, Title and ExcerptExcerpt An excerpt is the description of the blog
post or page that will by default show on the blog archive page, in search results(
SERPs), and on social media. With an SEO plugin, the excerpt may also be in that
plugin’s metabox. Generation have been improved to prevent unwanted formatting,
such as:

 * Conversational preambles
 * Wrapper quotes
 * Markdown artifacts
 * MetaMeta Meta is a term that refers to the inside workings of a group. For us,
this is the team that works on internal WordPress sites like WordCamp Central
   and Make WordPress. commentary

These improvements are especially noticeable when using smaller language models.

### Bulk Enable or Disable Experiments

Managing Experiments is now faster with support for bulk enabling and disabling
Experiment groups.

This is especially useful for:

 * Testing workflows across multiple Experiments
 * Quickly toggling features during development or evaluation
 * Managing large sets of capabilities more efficiently

### Improved AI Settings Experience

Several UIUI UI is an acronym for User Interface - the layout of the page the user
interacts with. Think ‘how are they doing that’ and less about what they are doing.
improvements refine the overall settings experience:

 * Improved visual hierarchy makes card titles more prominent
 * Button loading states now match WordPress standard loading patterns
 * Feature descriptions now clearly list supported AI providerProvider An AI service
offering models for generation, embeddings, or other capabilities (e.g., Anthropic,
   Google, OpenAI). models
 * AccessibilityAccessibility Accessibility (commonly shortened to a11y) refers
to the design of products, devices, services, or environments for people with
disabilities. The concept of accessible design ensures both “direct access” (
i.e. unassisted) and “indirect access” meaning compatibility with a person’s
assistive technology (for example, computer screen readers). (https://en.wikipedia.
   org/wiki/Accessibility) improvements to modal workflows
 * Review Notes now appear only on supported post types

These changes make the interface clearer and more consistent with WordPress design
patterns.

### Performance Improvements for Review Notes

Review Notes now send reduced context during processing.

This helps:

 * Reduce token usage
 * Improve performance
 * Lower overall model costs

These changes are particularly helpful on larger content workflows.

### Additional Improvements and Fixes

Other notable improvements include:

 * The legacy AI settings `ai` page now redirects automatically to the new `ai-wp-
   admin` page (powered via `wp-build`)
 * Added support checks using `wp_supports_ai()` before initializing Features or
   Experiments
 * Improved dependency error handling in asset loading
 * Modernized internal string handling using `str_starts_with()` and `str_contains()`
 * Deferred requirement error messages until translations are available
 * Refactored bootstrap and asset loading systems for improved reliability
 * Updated testing documentation to match the current test setup
 * Updated blueprint configuration to use WordPress betaBeta A pre-release of software
that is given out to a large group of users to trial under real conditions. Beta
versions have gone through alpha testing in-house and are generally fairly close
in look, feel and function to the final product; however, design changes often
occur as part of the process. versions

These updates improve overall stability and compatibility across environments and
help streamline development workflows and maintain consistency across the codebase.

## What’s next in 0.9.0?

Work is already underway on several features and refinements planned for [0.9.0](https://github.com/WordPress/ai/milestone/17),
including:

 * Onboarding flows as necessary in support of the [“Try AI” callout](https://core.trac.wordpress.org/ticket/64711)
   in WordPress 7.0 (see [#183](https://github.com/WordPress/ai/issues/183), [#428](https://github.com/WordPress/ai/issues/428),
   and [#457](https://github.com/WordPress/ai/issues/457))
 * New Experiment: [Content Resizing](https://github.com/WordPress/ai/pull/331)
 * New Experiment: [Comment Moderation Assistance](https://github.com/WordPress/ai/pull/155)
 * New Experiment: [AI Request Logging](https://github.com/WordPress/ai/pull/437)

   and [images](https://github.com/WordPress/ai/pull/302) via [C2PA](https://c2pa.org/)

Several early prototype experiments are also being explored, including [type-ahead suggestions](https://github.com/WordPress/ai/pull/151),
[extended provider support](https://github.com/WordPress/ai/pull/148), [integration with Gutenberg’s experiment Media Editor](https://github.com/WordPress/ai/pull/446),
[Connector Usage Approvals](https://github.com/WordPress/ai/pull/467), and tools
like the [AI Playground](https://github.com/WordPress/ai/pull/140) and deeper [MCP integration](https://github.com/WordPress/ai/pull/152).
These concepts are still exploratory, but they help test how AI could support real
workflows across WordPress. We encourage users and developers to [review and test these ideas and share feedback](https://make.wordpress.org/ai/2026/02/04/call-for-testing-exploring-new-ai-experiments/)
so the most valuable experiments can mature and land in upcoming releases like 0.9.0.

What’s New In
AI 0.7.0?

We’re pleased to announce the release of [AI v0.7.0](https://github.com/WordPress/ai/releases/tag/0.7.0),
the latest update to the canonical pluginPlugin A plugin is a piece of software
containing a group of functions that can be added to a WordPress website. They can
extend functionality or add new features to your WordPress websites. WordPress plugins
are written in the PHP programming language and integrate seamlessly with WordPress.
These can be free in the WordPress.org Plugin Directory [https://wordpress.org/plugins/](https://wordpress.org/plugins/)
or can be cost-based plugin from a third-party. powering experimental AI-powered
features in WordPress. This release expands AI-assisted editorial workflows by introducing
new classification and SEO capabilities, improving bulk media handling, and continuing
to refine the reliability and extensibility of AI-powered integrations across the
post editor. Together, these updates continue the effort to make AI feel like a
natural part of publishing workflows, helping authors organize content, improve
discoverability, and streamline repetitive tasks directly within WordPress.

## What’s new in 0.7.0?

### New Experiment: Content Classification

The new Content Classification experiment helps authors generate suggested taxonomyTaxonomy
A taxonomy is a way to group things together. In WordPress, some common taxonomies
are category, link, tag, or post format. [https://codex.wordpress.org/Taxonomies#Default_Taxonomies](https://codex.wordpress.org/Taxonomies#Default_Taxonomies).
terms based on post content.

With this enabled, users can:

 * Generate suggested Categories and Tags based on the post title, excerptExcerpt
An excerpt is the description of the blog post or page that will by default show
on the blog archive page, in search results (SERPs), and on social media. With
an SEO plugin, the excerpt may also be in that plugin’s metabox., and content
 * Apply consistent taxonomy terms across content
 * Reduce manual tagging effort while maintaining editorial consistency by limiting
AI suggestions to preexisting terms on the site

This experiment builds toward more structured content workflows, making it easier
to maintain organization across large content libraries.

### New Experiment: MetaMeta Meta is a term that refers to the inside workings of a group. For us, this is the team that works on internal WordPress sites like WordCamp Central and Make WordPress. Description Generation

Version 0.7.0 also introduces Meta Description Generation, enabling AI-assisted
SEO-friendly generation of meta descriptions.

Users can now:

 * Generate suggested meta descriptions directly from post content
 * Improve search visibility without leaving the editor
 * Maintain consistency across SEO descriptions at scale

Together, Content Classification and Meta Description Generation establish the foundation
for richer content metadata workflows powered by AI.

### Bulk Alt Text Generation

Users can now generate alt text for multiple images at once directly from the Media
Library.

This new bulk workflow:

 * Adds a bulk “Generate Alt Text” action in the Media Library
 * Enables batch processing of alt text across multiple images
 * Helps improve accessibilityAccessibility Accessibility (commonly shortened to
a11y) refers to the design of products, devices, services, or environments for
people with disabilities. The concept of accessible design ensures both “direct
access” (i.e. unassisted) and “indirect access” meaning compatibility with a
person’s assistive technology (for example, computer screen readers). (https://
   en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Accessibility) across large media libraries

In addition, alt text generation has been refined to better align with the W3CW3C

descriptions.

These updates make it significantly easier to improve accessibility across existing
content without requiring manual updates to individual media items.

### Improvements to the Abilities Explorer

Version 0.7.0 also improves the usability of the Abilities Explorer, making it easier
to navigate and work with growing sets of AI capabilities.

Enhancements include:

 * CategoryCategory The 'category' taxonomy lets you group posts / content together

   support to group related abilities
 * Improved organization for environments with many registered abilities

These updates help both users and developers better understand available capabilities
and locate the tools they need more quickly.

### Editor and Workflow Refinements

Several refinements have been made to improve the overall reliability and usability
of AI features inside the editor.

Notable updates include:

 * Improved error handling when incompatible providers are used
 * Fixes to ensure generated content uses the same language as the source content
 * Improvements to post content retrieval to ensure the latest edits are used
 * Fixes to ensure AI actions only appear when relevant blocks are selected

These changes help create a more predictable editing experience, reducing confusion
and improving trust in AI-assisted workflows.

### Extensibility and Developer Enhancements

This release introduces new extensibility hooksHooks In WordPress theme and development,
hooks are functions that can be applied to an action or a Filter in WordPress. Actions
are functions performed when a certain event occurs in WordPress. Filters allow
you to modify certain functions. Arguments used to hook both filters and actions
look the same. that make it easier to customize how AI workflows behave.

Developers can now:

 * Modify system instructions dynamically
 * Adjust abilityAbility A registered, self-documenting unit of WordPress functionality
that can be discovered and invoked through multiple contexts (REST API, Command
Palette, MCP). Includes authorization and input/output specifications. results
   before they are returned
 * Customize post context used during AI operations

These extensibility improvements provide greater flexibility when integrating AI
features into custom workflows, plugins, or editorial environments.

Additional improvements include:

 * Updated credential detection to support non-APIAPI An API or Application Programming

What’s New In
AI 0.6.0?

We’re pleased to announce the release of [AI v0.6.0](https://github.com/WordPress/ai/releases/tag/0.6.0),
the latest update to the canonical pluginPlugin A plugin is a piece of software
containing a group of functions that can be added to a WordPress website. They can
extend functionality or add new features to your WordPress websites.
This release builds on recent work aligning with [WordPress 7.0](https://make.wordpress.org/core/7-0/)
by introducing image editing and refinement workflows, along with continued improvements
to how AI Features and Experiments are structured and surfaced throughout the plugin.

## What’s new in 0.6.0?

### Image Editing and Refinement Workflows

Version 0.6.0 introduces the next phase of AI-powered media workflows by expanding
beyond image generation into image editing and refinement.

Users can now:

 * Refine generated images through an iterative prompt-based workflow
 * Edit existing images directly within the Media Library
 * Apply preset editing actions, such as expanding or removing backgrounds and removing
or replacing elements within an image

Together, these updates begin to establish a more complete AI-assisted image editing
experience inside WordPress, allowing authors to not just generate images, but actively
refine and adapt them without leaving the editor or admin.

### Improvements to AI Feature Structure

This release also includes an important internal shift in how functionality is organized
within the plugin.

Experiments have been refactored to be treated as a type of Feature, helping create
a clearer structure for how AI capabilities are registered, surfaced, and evolved
over time. This lays the groundwork for promoting more mature Experiments into stable
Features in future releases.

> **As part of this evolution, the plugin has also been renamed from `AI Experiments`
> to simply `AI`, reflecting its growing role as the central place for AI-powered
> functionality in WordPress.**

### Editor and Workflow Enhancements

Several improvements have been made to the editor experience to make AI features
easier to discover and use:

 * The Generate Alt Text action has been moved to the Content tab for improved visibility
 * UIUI UI is an acronym for User Interface - the layout of the page the user interacts
with. Think ‘how are they doing that’ and less about what they are doing. labels
and interactions have been refined for greater consistency
 * AI abilities, such as title generation, have been standardized for more predictable
   behavior

These updates continue the effort to make AI features feel like a natural part of
the WordPress editing experience, rather than separate or experimental add-ons.
The AI plugin continues to serve as a laboratory for exploring how AI can support
real publishing workflows, combining capabilities like content generation, editorial
review, and media creation into a unified experience.

### Stability and Developer Improvements

Version 0.6.0 also includes a number of fixes and developer-focused updates, including:

 * Improved error handling in the Generate Alt Text workflow
 * Refactoring of upgrade routines and migrationMigration Moving the code, database
and media files for a website site from one server to another. Most typically
done when changing hosting companies. handling
 * Updates to plugin constants and hook naming conventions

These changes help improve reliability and make it easier for contributors and developers
to extend and build on the plugin.
