This week’s AI contributor meeting focused on planning for WordPress 7.2, continued embeddings work across the PHP PHP (recursive acronym for PHP: Hypertext Preprocessor) is a widely-used open source general-purpose scripting language that is especially suited for web development and can be embedded into HTML. https://www.php.net/manual/en/index.php AI Client and AI plugin A plugin is a piece of software containing a group of functions that can be added to a WordPress website. They can extend functionality or add new features to your WordPress websites. WordPress plugins are written in the PHP programming language and integrate seamlessly with WordPress. These can be free in the WordPress.org Plugin Directory https://wordpress.org/plugins/ or can be cost-based plugin from a third-party., expanding featured connector plugins, maintainership needs across several AI projects, MCP updates, and next steps for the AI translation experiment.
WordPress 7.2 Roadmap Planning
@annezazu is collecting input from the AI Team for the WordPress 7.2 roadmap. Contributors were encouraged to add notable projects and priorities to the existing discussion soon so they can be considered for the upcoming roadmap post.
AI Plugin and Embeddings
Featured Connectors: @jeffpaul is continuing work to expand the connector plugins surfaced on the AI plugin’s Connectors screen beyond the current Google, OpenAI, and Anthropic options. Before moving the work forward, the proposed connectors will be tested to ensure they support image generation, with image editing support evaluated where available, as this is the sole Feature in the plugin and a Connector not supporting that would be sub-optimal.
Embeddings: Work to add embedding support to the PHP AI Client is progressing toward a 1.5.0 release. @dkotter noted that a schema change currently blocks the remaining work. Once the PHP Client release is available, the team plans to bring embedding support into the WordPress AI Client during the 7.2 cycle, which will unblock additional AI plugin development. The AI plugin work is being broken into smaller, independently reviewable pieces rather than large feature PRs.
Because several contributors are prioritizing these foundational pieces, the next AI plugin release is currently expected later this month.
Embedding storage: In response to a question from @euthelup, @dkotter clarified that storage and similarity functionality is currently being designed for the AI plugin rather than as a new WordPress core Core is the set of software required to run WordPress. The Core Development Team builds WordPress. database table. The approach will allow embeddings for posts, pages, terms, and other content to be stored in WordPress, while recognizing that PHP/database-based similarity calculations have scaling limits compared with a dedicated vector database. Feedback on the schema is especially useful while this architecture is being defined.
Maintainers Needed for AI Clients and Connectors
The team is looking for additional maintainers for the PHP AI Client, WordPress AI Client, and the three core connector plugins. The goal is to ensure those projects continue receiving consistent issue triage, reviews, releases, and contributor support as current maintainer availability changes.
@whyisjake had previously expressed interest in contributing to the client work, and @neillmcshea will follow up about his availability. His work with @ericmann on the Secrets API proposal for WordPress 7.2 may limit the time he has available during this release cycle.
Anyone interested in helping maintain these projects is encouraged to reach out in #core-ai.
Model Context Protocol (MCP) Development
@ovidiu-galatan is working through breaking changes introduced by newer MCP revisions The WordPress revisions system stores a record of each saved draft or published update. The revision system allows you to see what changes were made in each revision by dragging a slider (or using the Next/Previous buttons). The display indicates what has changed in each revision., with draft work underway in both the PHP MCP schema and MCP Adapter Translates WordPress abilities into Model Context Protocol format, allowing AI assistants like Claude and ChatGPT to discover and invoke WordPress capabilities as tools, resources, and prompts.. Current work includes:
Separately, @justlevine believes the MCP Adapter is ready to be submitted to the WordPress.org The community site where WordPress code is created and shared by the users. This is where you can download the source code for WordPress core, plugins and themes as well as the central location for community conversations and organization. https://wordpress.org/ plugin directory and requested another review before submission. @ovidiu-galatan volunteered to review its readiness, @jeffpaul able to help get submitted and coordinate with Plugin team to move under the WPORG author account.
@euthelup also has draft work to simplify enabling MCP directly from the AI plugin, including installing the MCP Adapter when the capability is enabled. @jorgefilipecosta offered to review the PR once it is shared, noting the value of making the AI plugin and MCP Adapter feel like a more integrated experience.
AI Translation Experiment
@estelaris will begin more extensive testing of the AI translation experiment next week. Her initial approach will compare translations produced through the plugin with direct translations from ChatGPT and Claude supplied with WordPress glossaries. The comparison should help identify whether glossary support and other capabilities need to be added to the experiment.
The work remains exploratory. Rather than beginning broader documentation translation immediately, @estelaris plans to document the capabilities and gaps discovered through testing so contributors can focus development on specific needs first.
Decisions
- Embedding storage and similarity functionality will be developed in the AI plugin rather than through a new WordPress core database table. Core integration is not anticipated in the near term.
Next Steps
- Contributors should share notable WordPress 7.2 roadmap items with @annezazu for inclusion in the roadmap planning.
- @jeffpaul will finish testing proposed featured connector plugins, particularly image generation compatibility.
- @dkotter will continue the schema work blocking the next stage of PHP AI Client embedding support.
- @jeffpaul will work toward the next PHP AI Client release so the WordPress 7.2 and AI plugin work can begin testing against it.
- @neillmcshea will follow up with @whyisjake about availability to help maintain the AI clients.
- @ovidiu-galatan will review the MCP Adapter work for WordPress.org submission readiness.
- @jorgefilipecosta will review Andrei Lupu’s MCP activation work once the draft PR is shared.
- @estelaris will begin translation testing and document future requirements for the experiment.
Upcoming Meetings
Props to @neel33 for pre-publish review.
