The concept of accessible design ensures both \u201cdirect access\u201d (i.e. unassisted) and \u201cindirect access\u201d meaning compatibility with a person\u2019s assistive technology (for example, computer screen readers). (https:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Accessibility)<\/span><\/span><\/span>\u00a0Team meeting that happens on alternate Thursday in\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/wordpress.slack.com\/archives\/C02RP4X03\">#accessibility.<\/a>\u00a0You can read the\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/wordpress.slack.com\/archives\/C02RP4X03\/p1778166090436999\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">full transcript<\/a>\u00a0here or see the\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/make.wordpress.org\/meetings\/\">full meeting schedule<\/a>.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li><a href=\"https:\/\/equalizedigital.com\/gaad2026\/\">Join Global Accessibility Awareness Day 2026<\/a><\/li>\n\n\n\n<li><a href=\"https:\/\/make.wordpress.org\/accessibility\/2026\/05\/06\/accessibility-ready-requirements-updated\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">Accessibility-Ready Requirements are now updated.<\/a> Please take a moment to see the changes made.<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li><a href=\"https:\/\/make.wordpress.org\/core\/2026\/04\/22\/wordpress-7-0-release-party-updated-schedule\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">RC3 (\u201cnew Beta 1\u201d) released on this Friday, May 8th<\/a><\/li>\n<\/ul>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\">Working Group Updates<\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\"><a href=\"https:\/\/wordpress.slack.com\/archives\/C02RP4X03\/p1778166917381609\">Docs<\/a><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\"><a href=\"https:\/\/profiles.wordpress.org\/rianrietveld\/\" class=\"mention\"><span class=\"mentions-prefix\">@<\/span>rianrietveld<\/a> shared that the work is in progress on <a href=\"http:\/\/wpaccessibility.org\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">wpaccessibility.org<\/a>:<\/p>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li>update of the documentation about testing for accessibility.<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>add more internal resources to the different topics, to cross link the information on the site.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\"><a href=\"https:\/\/wordpress.slack.com\/archives\/C02RP4X03\/p1778167344894179\">General<\/a><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\"><a href=\"https:\/\/profiles.wordpress.org\/joedolson\/\" class=\"mention\"><span class=\"mentions-prefix\">@<\/span>joedolson<\/a> shared the updates: <\/p>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li>Work is progressing toward the WordPress 7.0 release. Because of the current uncertainty around the release timeline, work on 7.1 has been moving slowly.<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>The major open question is whether the 7.1 cycle will be shortened or delayed, which may directly affect the scope of work. Due to this uncertainty, current priorities will focus on already-milestoned issues instead of adding new items.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\"><a href=\"https:\/\/wordpress.slack.com\/archives\/C02RP4X03\/p1778169466160329\">Gutenberg<\/a><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Primary need is to work on the many accessibility issues that <a href=\"https:\/\/profiles.wordpress.org\/joedolson\/\" class=\"mention\"><span class=\"mentions-prefix\">@<\/span>joedolson<\/a> cited on visual <span tabindex='0' class='glossary-item-container'>revisions<span class='glossary-item-hidden-content'><span class='glossary-item-header'>Revisions<\/span> <span class='glossary-item-description'>The WordPress revisions system stores a record of each saved draft or published update. The revision system allows you to see what changes were made in each revision by dragging a slider (or using the Next\/Previous buttons). The display indicates what has changed in each revision.<\/span><\/span><\/span>. Some of the work is already in progress, so at least <strong>some<\/strong> of the issues (and many of the most critical ones) will make it for 7.0<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Please check <a href=\"https:\/\/github.com\/WordPress\/gutenberg\/issues\/77530\">https:\/\/github.com\/WordPress\/gutenberg\/issues\/77530<\/a> for the reference. <\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\"><a href=\"https:\/\/wordpress.slack.com\/archives\/C02RP4X03\/p1778169512180919\">Themes<\/a><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">The update was already share for <code>accessibility-ready<\/code> requirements. These are effective immediately, and we\u2019ll be doing a big push to get existing themes updated.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\"><a href=\"https:\/\/wordpress.slack.com\/archives\/C02RP4X03\/p1778167351579459\">Meta &amp; Contribution Tracking Discussion<\/a><\/p>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li>Attention was drawn to ongoing work in\u00a0<code><a href=\"https:\/\/wordpress.slack.com\/archives\/C0ATCQF2PMM\">#meta-janitors<\/a><\/code>, where several rapid changes are happening across <span tabindex='0' class='glossary-item-container'>WordPress.org<span class='glossary-item-hidden-content'><span class='glossary-item-header'>WordPress.org<\/span> <span class='glossary-item-description'>The community site where WordPress code is created and shared by the users. This is where you can download the source code for WordPress core, plugins and themes as well as the central location for community conversations and organization.  <a href=\"https:\/\/wordpress.org\/\">https:\/\/wordpress.org\/<\/a><\/span><\/span><\/span> that may require accessibility review and input.<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>A discussion was introduced around\u00a0<strong>automated contribution tracking<\/strong>\u00a0for the accessibility team as part of the evolving <a href=\"https:\/\/make.wordpress.org\/accessibility\/pledges\/\">Five for the Future (FFTF) initiative.<\/a><\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>The goal is to move beyond self-reported contribution hours and instead rely more on measurable contribution data such as:\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li><span tabindex='0' class='glossary-item-container'>Core<span class='glossary-item-hidden-content'><span class='glossary-item-header'>Core<\/span> <span class='glossary-item-description'>Core is the set of software required to run WordPress. The Core Development Team builds WordPress.<\/span><\/span><\/span> commits<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li><span tabindex='0' class='glossary-item-container'>Trac<span class='glossary-item-hidden-content'><span class='glossary-item-header'>Trac<\/span> <span class='glossary-item-description'>Trac is the place where contributors create issues for bugs or feature requests much like GitHub.<a href=\"https:\/\/core.trac.wordpress.org\/\">https:\/\/core.trac.wordpress.org\/<\/a>.<\/span><\/span><\/span>\/<span tabindex='0' class='glossary-item-container'>GitHub<span class='glossary-item-hidden-content'><span class='glossary-item-header'>GitHub<\/span> <span class='glossary-item-description'>GitHub is a website that offers online implementation of git repositories that can easily be shared, copied and modified by other developers. Public repositories are free to host, private repositories require a paid subscription. GitHub introduced the concept of the \u2018pull request\u2019 where code changes done in branches by contributors can be reviewed and discussed before being merged by the repository owner. <a href=\"https:\/\/github.com\/\">https:\/\/github.com\/<\/a><\/span><\/span><\/span> activity<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Patches and PRs<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Ticket participation<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>It was also acknowledged that many valuable contributions are harder to track, including:\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li>Accessibility reviews<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Documentation work<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Expert guidance and discussions<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Work on external properties like WPAccessibility.org<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\"><strong>Key Clarifications<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li>The current system is still in a very early and evolving stage.<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>No implementation decisions have been made yet for the Accessibility Team.<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>The team will eventually need to decide:\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li>Which contribution signals should be tracked<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Which data sources should be used<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Existing pages related to this initiative currently function more like prototypes\/demos and are not fully connected yet.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\"><strong>Community Concerns Raised<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li>Some contributors shared that the documentation and process, especially steps 4 and 5 in the proposal, currently feel difficult to follow.<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>It was clarified that:\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li>This initiative is\u00a0<strong>not<\/strong>\u00a0intended to change how contributors participate.<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>The focus is on understanding and representing existing contributions more accurately.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\"><strong>Action Items \/ Next Steps<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li>Before further discussions, more clarity is needed around the technical implementation and data pipeline details.<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>No immediate action items were assigned.<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>The topic will be considered as a potential agenda item for a future bi-weekly meeting (likely not the next one due to GAAD scheduling).<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n\n\n\n<div class=\"wp-block-wporg-notice is-info-notice\">\n<div class=\"wp-block-wporg-notice__icon\"><\/div>\n<div class=\"wp-block-wporg-notice__content\">\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">NOTE: If you\u2019d like to have a topic added to the agenda for our next meeting, please mention it in the\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/make.wordpress.org\/accessibility\/\">comments on an upcoming agenda<\/a>.<\/p>\n<\/div><\/div>\n<p class=\"o2-appended-tags\"><a href=\"https:\/\/make.wordpress.org\/accessibility\/tag\/meeting-notes\/\" class=\"tag\"><span class=\"tag-prefix\">#<\/span>meeting-notes<\/a><\/p><nav class='o2-post-footer-actions'><ul class='o2-post-footer-action-row'><li class='o2-post-footer-action'><a href=\"https:\/\/login.wordpress.org\/?redirect_to=https%3A%2F%2Fmake.wordpress.org%2Faccessibility%2F2026%2F05%2F11%2Faccessibility-team-meeting-notes-may-07-2026%2F%23respond&#038;locale=en_US\" title=\"Login to Reply\"  class=\"genericon  genericon-reply\"  data-action=\"login-to-reply\"  data-actionstate=\"default\" >Login to Reply<\/a><\/li><\/ul><div class='o2-post-footer-action-likes'><\/div><ul class='o2-post-footer-action-row'><\/ul><\/nav>","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>These is the bi-weekly notes for the\u00a0AccessibilityAccessibility Accessibility (commonly shortened to a11y) refers to the design of products, devices, services, or environments for people with disabilities.
