Accessibility Team Meeting Notes: October 15, 2021

These are the weekly notes for the AccessibilityAccessibility Accessibility (commonly shortened to a11y) refers to the design of products, devices, services, or environments for people with disabilities. The concept of accessible design ensures both “direct access” (i.e. unassisted) and “indirect access” meaning compatibility with a person’s assistive technology (for example, computer screen readers). Going through TRACTrac Trac is the place where contributors create issues for bugs or feature requests much like GitHub. tickets milestoned for 5.9 in the New Features and Enhancements categories. Will finish this off soon, probably by next week.

GutenbergGutenberg The Gutenberg project is the new Editor Interface for WordPress. The editor improves the process and experience of creating new content, making writing rich content much simpler. It uses ‘blocks’ to add richness rather than shortcodes, custom HTML etc.

Although there were no updates shared from the Gutenberg group today, this post on accessibility improvements in Gutenberg might be worth highlighting for anyone who hasn’t read it yet. This GitHubGitHub GitHub is a website that offers online implementation of git repositories that can can easily be shared, copied and modified by other developers. Public repositories are free to host, private repositories require a paid subscription. GitHub introduced the concept of the ‘pull request’ where code changes done in branches by contributors can be reviewed and discussed before being merged be the repository owner. Pull Request could also use screen reader testing. List View: experiment with only rendering a fixed number of items

While there were no updates from the Themes group today, it is likely time to start allocating some focus to the new Twenty Twenty-Two theme. This Twenty Twenty-Two GitHub Issue is currently tracking accessibility.
