Accessibility Team Update: September 25

Most of the time was spent discussing https://core.trac.wordpress.org/ticket/21334 3.7, grahamarmfield->helen, closed, Row actions are not always keyboard accessible. Helen Hou joined us for the discussion.

1. When mouse hovers over a page/post row in main Pages/Posts screen ‘quick links’ appear. Suggesting that they also are made available for keyboard-only users and screen reader users.

2. When using the QuickEdit panel the time/date controls have separate tabindex and no labels. Suggesting that the tabindex be removed from those controls, and that labels be used.

Discussion centered around the need to reduce verbosity for screen reader users, while still making the controls available to them.

It was decided to test the latest build and come back with a recommendation.

Support Team Update for September 26th 2013

This was a light week but I think that may change soon (see below for Kim’s update).

The following items were brought up in the IRC chat.

Request that the Reviews section get “nofollow”

There have been some email back and forth between myself, Mel (Esmi) and Jennifer (WPyogi) regarding the Review sub-forum. Given the amount of links embedded in those reviews I’ve been asked to send an email to Otto and request that “nofollow” is set for that sub-forum. The idea is that this may reduce the amount of successful spam links and I think it’s a good idea.

While I was commenting on this in IRC I made a poor attempt at humor (awful, not funny, possibly inappropriate) regarding moderators and OCD. What I meant to convey was that once you start looking into the reviews section it’s very easy to get bogged down and spend a lot of time in that section.

Apologies for my gaffe and I’ll send that email request to Otto. I think this already should be happening but I’ll check with him to make sure.

I’m leaving the name of the provider off in an attempt to give them a break. Providers like people sometimes have bad days too. 😉

Yesterday morning it was reported that a popular web host was limiting consecutive requests and/or having an issue with relative URLs. This was discussed in the wp-forums list and may have been already been resolved. It appears that this may have been due to a recent ApacheApache Apache is the most widely used web server software. I have reached out to the email listed in the host’s forum account but have not received any reply. If there are any more issues or even an official response from that hosting company please report it to the wp-forums list.

  • The decision was made in the weekly dev chat to clear on upgrade only non-expiring transients, and expired transients, leaving currently “time-valid” transients in database after upgrade (20316).
  • Decision made to go ahead with search results by relevancy in 3.7 (#2394), with first run expected to be committed soon.
  • Automatic Updates now enabled by default in trunk. First test(s) will be with nightlies and soon-to-be-released betas. More information on the Make/Core blog.

Accessibility Team Update: September 18

Cynthia Waddell

AccessibilityAccessibility Accessibility (commonly shortened to a11y) refers to the design of products, devices, services, or environments for people with disabilities. The concept of accessible design ensures both “direct access” (i.e. unassisted) and “indirect access” meaning compatibility with a person’s assistive technology (for example, computer screen readers). (https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Accessibility) Statement Final Draft

“Accessibility is the degree to which a product, device, service, or environment is available to as many people as possible.” Cynthia Waddell

WordPress is founded on the principles of an inclusive community and democratization of publishing. The development of WordPress, based on standards and best practices, offers a constantly improving environment with flexibility and choice. We promise to always work toward creating an environment accessible to as many people as possible, inclusive of technology and ability.

We want community involvement and welcome feedback. Your comments help us enhance the accessibility of WordPress.

Projects To Be Followed

During the remainder of the meeting we discussed the projects we believe should be followed by the WordPress Accessibility Team. We agreed that we have too few people on the team to follow all these projects, but we compiled the following list.
