Support Team Update – April 30

Just as a general reminder: Since we’re about to have a new version of WP, the frustrated users will be coming in droves. It’s very important you remember to keep calm and treat people how you would like to be treated. Dial back your attitude, and if you can’t, you do not have to reply to a post.

The corollary to this is remember the WP mailing lists and IRC chats are NOT private lists/groups. Anyone can see them and read the logs. So your behavior on those places is totally transparent.

Now

  • WordPress 3.6 BetaBeta A pre-release of software that is given out to a large group of users to trial under real conditions. Beta versions have gone through alpha testing in-house and are generally fairly close in look, feel and function to the final product; however, design changes often occur as part of the process. 2 has dropped. There are still quirks, please keep an eye out in the forums.
  • Remember to move posts to the right forum 🙂 If there’s an alpha/beta post about WP 3.5, move it out to Troubleshooting and so on
  • If a tracTrac Trac is the place where contributors create issues for bugs or feature requests much like GitHub.https://core.trac.wordpress.org/. ticket is raised for a bug in Alpha/Beta, mark the ticket resolved so we know it’s being handled. If they keep posting, tell them to use trac or (if it’s not related) make a new post.

Last Week

Same as this week, only Beta 1 😉

Accessibility Group Update

3.6 Post Formats

Both the video and audio post formats proposed for 3.6 could benefit from an ability add links to captions (for videos) or transcripts (for audio files). However, as Post Formats might be removed from 3.6, we have shelved futher investigation for the time being.

MP6 PluginPlugin A plugin is a piece of software containing a group of functions that can be added to a WordPress website. Members of the group are now looking for possible accessibilityAccessibility Accessibility (commonly shortened to a11y) refers to the design of products, devices, services, or environments for people with disabilities. The concept of accessible design ensures both “direct access” (i.e. unassisted) and “indirect access” meaning compatibility with a person’s assistive technology (for example, computer screen readers). (https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Accessibility) issues via MP6 with a view to helping to remove any problems in 3.7’s interface before they become too deeply embedded.

GlotPress

We’ve been asked to provide feedback on the front end of the GlotPress site and to highlight any areas where accessibility could be improved. The final details for this project will be drawn up over the next few weeks.

Theme Accessibility Auditing

We are almost ready to begin some practical testing of the Theme Accessibility Audit.

Videos

We are still looking to develop a series of videos demonstrating disabled volunteers navigating around WordPress sites & now have a 50 minute video demonstrating a screen sharing session with a user of Dragon Naturally Speaking navigating around his own wordpress.comWordPress.com An online implementation of WordPress code that lets you immediately access a new WordPress environment to publish your content. WordPress.com is a private company owned by Automattic that hosts the largest multisite in the world. This is arguably the best place to start blogging if you have never touched WordPress before. https://wordpress.com/ site. Over the next month or so, this will hopefully be published as a series of smaller videos with captions.

Extending Pan-Accessibility

Much of the previous accessibility work within WordPress has been focused on visually-impaired screen readers users. Ideally, accessibility improvements (and feedback) need to adopt a more pan-disability approach. We are now actively appealing for users of other forms of assistive technologyAssistive technology Assistive technology is an umbrella term that includes assistive, adaptive, and rehabilitative devices for people with disabilities and also includes the process used in selecting, locating, and using them. Assistive technology promotes greater independence by enabling people to perform tasks that they were formerly unable to accomplish, or had great difficulty accomplishing, by providing enhancements to, or changing methods of interacting with, the technology needed to accomplish such tasks. https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Assistive_technology to become involved.

Events Group Update for 4/25/2013

Oh hai! We suck and have not posted an update for a month. 🙁 I swear on a free copy of WordPress that we’ve been busy, though.

Past month:

  • Launched the Multi-Event WordCampWordCamp WordCamps are casual, locally-organized conferences covering everything related to WordPress. They're one of the places where the WordPress community comes together to teach one another what they’ve learned throughout the year and share the joy. Learn more. Sponsorship program. To date, BlueHost has come on as a Pillar in the US/Canada and a Champion everywhere else for Q2, and DreamHost has asked to sponsor as a Champion in the US from May-December, w00t! Looking like GoDaddy will also sponsor this way soon.
  • Posted the WordCamp organizer mentorship program proposal for team reps to review.
  • Review Guidelines group has continued reaching out to survey respondents, specifically about ticket prices, and is close to having a recommendation for the Team Reps on that guideline.
  • WordPress.tv published 84 videos
  • Approved the following WordCamps for pre-planning: Albuquerque, Tokyo, Grand Rapids, Birmingham, Kenya, Cape Town, and Porto
  • The following WordCamps set their date: Kobe, Portland, Buffalo, and Vancouver.
  • WordPress 10th Anniversary save the date and silvery grey tees
  • Set up a DocuSign instance for WordCamp organizer/speaker/sponsor/volunteer signatures and Speaker AV releases
  • Andrea got and recovered from pneumonia

Coming week:

  • Start sending out Docusign emails for WordCamp organizer/speaker/sponsor/volunteer signatures and Speaker AV releases
  • Reconnoiter with some groups that have fallen quiet
  • Many, many, many vendor payments for WordCamps in April/May

Support Team Update – April 23

Last Week…

  • Cleaned up Alpha/Beta
  • Handled a strange sock-puppet attack (followed by someone impersonating me! yay!)
  • Raised tracTrac Trac is the place where contributors create issues for bugs or feature requests much like GitHub.https://core.trac.wordpress.org/. tickets from Alpha/BetaBeta A pre-release of software that is given out to a large group of users to trial under real conditions. This week

In a repeat? We still need some pluginPlugin A plugin is a piece of software containing a group of functions that can be added to a WordPress website. They can extend functionality or add new features to your WordPress websites. WordPress plugins are written in the PHP programming language and integrate seamlessly with WordPress. These can be free in the WordPress.org Plugin Directory https://wordpress.org/plugins/ or can be cost-based plugin from a third-party/theme/developer love in Alpha/Beta. Remember, we mark a post resolved once there’s a trac for it.

Always looking for more themes and plugins that hate 3.6 to add to the 3.6 OMGBBQ post

Docs Team Update April 23, 2013

This post comes a little bit late for last week but here goes:

This (last) week

  • The newly-launched ‘Adopt a Codex Page’ drive has proven pretty popular, with volunteers adopting 15 of the most popular Codex pages so far
  • @hearvox is working on a new Page Templates page for the Codex that’s shaping up well. Looking to reduce the code-heaviness.
  • @siobhan and @jenmylo are planning to begin work on a new documentation architecture over the several months
  • We’re still ramping up for the 3.6 Codex Sprint, combing through 400 changesets and several hundred still-open tracTrac Trac is the place where contributors create issues for bugs or feature requests much like GitHub.https://core.trac.wordpress.org/. tickets. The incoming code reference will alleviate much of this work in the future.
  • @siobhan is organizing a WordPress delegation to attend a docs conference in Cincinnati in June, inviting WP businesses to send someone and looking for interested community members.

Next (this) week

  • We’ll be collecting volunteers to handle bigger parts of the 3.6 Codex Sprint, a make/docs post is forthcoming
  • Work will continue on Adopt a Codex Page, handbooks and moving the new code reference forward
