Howdy gang. On this fine Friday evening we bring you version 1.1 of MP6. This was a short week for several of us, so this week’s edition consists of a few small updates:

More additions to the Dashicons icon font, including buttons in the visual editor (TinyMCE). Some plugins, including Jetpack, may still insert some PNG buttons that still need to be replaced.
CSSCSS CSS is an acronym for cascading style sheets. This is what controls the design or look and feel of a site. fixes for better layout positioning and cross-browser consistency.
More consistent results for custom checkbox and radio inputs.
Removing the PNG “stalk” on comment counts in lists.
Set textareas to overflow auto to prevent permanent scrollbars in IE.
Other small bugfixes.

This week’s iteration includes contributions from Joen Asmussen, Mel Choyce, Ben Dunkle, and myself.

Because this was a short week for us, don’t fret if an issue you reported hasn’t yet been fixed. Rest assured it’s on our radar.

Looking better and better!

I’m guessing no one’s looked at it in IE8, though. Surprise, *no* icons! I actually kind of like the simplicity it brings, but it renders several things useless, like tinyMCE 🙂 I just noticed it today in 1.0 and 1.1 doesn’t fix it.

  Thanks, Nick. We’ll have to build workarounds for IE8 and other obsolete browsers that are still officially supported. That will likely be one of the last things we do though, as changes we make elsewhere can end up breaking special cases created for IE<9.

If you installed MP6 and are now seeing errors, delete the mp6 folder from your /wp-content/plugins/ directory.

  That will be up to the coreCore Core is the set of software required to run WordPress. The Core Development Team builds WordPress. team, but we aiming to have it ready for them in time for 3.7. Many factors could change that though.

Thanks for the fixes of RTL!

There is one problem that I still see: In the New/Edit Post screen, in the tags metaMeta Meta is a term that refers to the inside workings of a group. For us, this is the team that works on internal WordPress sites like WordCamp Central and Make WordPress.-box, the x is located on top of the tag name.

The css should be changed like this:

I’m fine with replacing TinyMCE Icons with dashicons where possible, but
background: none !important; on a .mceIcon renders TinyMCE plugins resp. WP-plugins like TinyMCE Advanced useless, they rely on the ‘coreCore Core is the set of software required to run WordPress. The Core Development Team builds WordPress.’ icon sprite file. :/

What is the process you are using to make the adjustments to the layout and design of the UIUI UI is an acronym for User Interface - the layout of the page the user interacts with. Think ‘how are they doing that’ and less about what they are doing.?
The reason why I am asking is that I am playing with the thought of redoing certain elements (menus and submenus) of how the UI is put together in WP. To bring in another view of how things can be done. This means finding a simple way of actually changing the UI.

These can be free in the WordPress.org Plugin Directory https://wordpress.org/plugins/ or can be cost-based plugin from a third-party that makes bigger changes to the markup and such, but that’s not something I’ve got experience with.

    I do not have experience with it either. I am thinking of playing with the WP UIUI UI is an acronym for User Interface - the layout of the page the user interacts with. Think ‘how are they doing that’ and less about what they are doing. making test modifications to show possible interesting adjustments that can be done with the side menu and panels.
    As there are not just color modifications but other adjustments as well for instance the left line showing active plugins to make it even more clear which are active and not (which is a simple and good idea). Are you guys also planning on adding additional Admin color schemes under the user profile similar as to what exists today? Giving additional color options for the user.

      No plans for additional color schemes beyond the one we’re building now (color schemes are a surprising amount of work) but when we’re done, we imagine customizing the visuals of the admin by writing a pluginPlugin A plugin is a piece of software containing a group of functions that can be added to a WordPress website. I had thought the menubar had been changed to open on the left in mobile, but there are a number of issues that remain and have persisted:
- The mobile menu needs to be on the left, and more importantly, needs to be a part of the admin bar. As it stands, the button to access it is hidden underneath other elements on various pages, most notable the ‘About WordPress’ page where a WordPress logo sits over the top, making it very hard to navigate away
- The WordPress logo in mobile is misaligned and is cut off at the bottom
- Various other icons are misaligned in the admin toolbar
- Non CoreCore Core is the set of software required to run WordPress. The Core Development Team builds WordPress. menu icons are misaligned with their Core counterparts, some completely broken
Usability wise, it’s got significant problems:
- On an iPhone 4S, I had trouble making the menu slide out, it would slide out half a centimeter then hide itself, i had to press several times.
- Trying to add an image, I selected media, and the sub menu slid out, but before I could tap on ‘add new’ the screen went blank and I was taken to the main media library page
- There is a particularly troublesome problem in that the admin toolbar has no concept of overflow. Everything is expected to fit magically into the toolbar. It doesn’t, and when it doesn’t, it overflows on to the page, making links at the top hard to read or innaccessible. Various toolbar links flow into eachother overlapping, some over the top of the page outside the toolbar, and the user avatarAvatar An avatar is an image or illustration that specifically refers to a character that represents an online user. It’s usually a square box that appears next to the user’s name. covers up the menu link making it hard to click
In attempting to upload the above photo via my phone, I noticed a bug on the add new page, the image box is wider than the screen, making the edit/view link innaccessible:

Overall the style of MP6 is working out nicely, but it feels untested

  Thanks for the comprehensive list; I’ll add it to our to-do list. As we’ve stated before, MP6 is experimental and you should expect things to break while we continue to develop it. Rest assured that it is being tested in a multitude of browsers, both desktop and mobile, but since we’re releasing new versions weekly, every week there will be some things that are newly-broken and some things that have been reported but are not yet fixed.

It looks nice. Now how do I change it back to standard WP look? Or change the black to another color?
Or add in lines between each menu section to visibly split each section (as in the regular WP UIUI UI is an acronym for User Interface - the layout of the page the user interacts with. Think ‘how are they doing that’ and less about what they are doing.)?

Hi,
I use IE10 and I still receive the annoying unsecure browser warning in admin page, even in a fresh installation of WP 3.5.1. Won’t it be useful to add in future versions a proper tag just after tag to force IE browser mode, avoiding IE to fall back to compatibility mode?

I like it! The new styling on the checkboxes and radio buttons is nice, but the dropdown menus could use a similar retouch…they look a bit out of place and outdated now.

  I agree; sadly most browsers provide very few (or no) options for customizing select elements with CSSCSS CSS is an acronym for cascading style sheets. This is what controls the design or look and feel of a site.. There may be some other options for dropdowns in the future (requiring new code, not just new styles) but I’m afraid for now they’ll be sticking with their default browser-supplied styling.
