  I use Softaculous to handle my initial install, as well as customize title and tagline at this stage. Once the install is finished, I log in to the dashboard and follow this process:

  1. Posts>All Posts and edit the “Hello World” post to add “kitchen sink” HTML and Lorem text (if I plan on theme development.)
  2. Posts>Categories and create a new category called “News” which I will later set as the default.
  3. Pages>All Pages and clear out the sample page and add the pages I need, typically Home, About, Services, Contact, Blog, plus any others that client needs.
  4. Appearance>Menus and create a custom menu with the page order/structure I need.
  5. Settings>General and set the proper time zone and SAVE ALL CHANGES.
  6. Settings>Writing and uncheck the silly emoticons (great for blogs but not for business) and set the default category to “News” instead of “Uncategorized” and SAVE ALL CHANGES..
  7. Settings>Reading and set the front page to “Home” (and the blog to “Blog”) as well as set the number of posts displayed to 5 and SAVE ALL CHANGES.
  8. Settings>Media Settings and make tweaks to the defaults to work with the theme I have designed. I then uncheck the “Organize my uploads into month- and year-based folders” option and SAVE ALL CHANGES.
  9. Settings>Privacy and change site visibility to disallow search engines (since this is a dev site typically) and SAVE ALL CHANGES.
  10. Settings>Permalinks and set permalinks to Postname and SAVE ALL CHANGES.

  Also, here is a setting I wish I could make:  Since 99% of my clients need a CMS, I really really wish there was a setting to TURN OFF discussions and pingbacks on static pages. Thankfully most theme frameworks I use provide this option, but I really wish it was in core.  I also wish there were a way to easily export and import settings, since I tend to have to follow this 10 step process a lot.
