I posted a list of the UI changes that would need to be made to the new menus screen to make it consistent with everything else. You can see it over here: http://wpdevel.wordpress.com/2010/02/25/menus-ux-manifesto/
Design Challenge: We’ve been meaning to do this for a long time. We need to have a third option under the profile setting for the admin theme, one that is specifically designed for accessibility. Not just for screen readers, but for visual impairments and manual dexterity problems. Things like making action links persistent rather than on hover (a nightmare for people with tremors), making text bigger, making everything much higher contrast, replacing things like “#” with “View Post,” etc. If there are any accessibility aficionados in the group who’s like to work on this, the project should consist of two parts. 1. Do an accessibility review of the WP admin. We have most things covered in terms of screen readers, no-JavaScript versions, etc, but feel free to evaluate for those things as well. Any issues you find on that level, please report to me so I can get someone from core to get on a fix. Otherwise, look for areas such as the ones mentioned above where the visual design itself could be made more accessible. Put together a list of requirements, and then we’ll let people take a stab at comping up ideas. Reply to this post if you want to work on a) doing an accessibility review, b) work on putting together the guidelines doc, c) work on comps, or any combination of the above. There is an accessibility mailing list, which you can also use as a resource. Bear in mind the new menu screen is still in progress and is currently inaccessible, so leave that one off until we have the basics fixed on it. Priority: High
Styleguide: Any progress from last week?
Upcoming Design Challenges: Plugin management screen face lift, Comments screen facelift, Custom fields touch-up. Start thinking about the issues you see with each of these areas, and we’ll start challenges for both of those screens in the weeks ahead.

Jane,
The theme tabs have been added and a patch was submitted:
http://core.trac.wordpress.org/ticket/12412
I shot it over to Nacin via the dev channel and he stated he liked the other design better, figured I would let you know.
Gaston Figueroa and MatÃas Ventura are the main contributors, I did review more than anything

I saw a patch had been submitted, but I can’t test it as I’m en route to Ireland. If someone uploads a screenshot to the ticket I can make the ux case to Nacin.

How I wish I was heading to Ireland
I cleaned up a spacing issue between the tabs and submitted a new patch. I also took some screenshots of each tab active and attached them to the ticket.
I’ve talked to Nacin today and he is aware of the ticket and patch.

Hopefully this gets the ball rolling.
Safe travels Jane, have a great time!

Is the location of Menus in the admin navigation set? Since most of what will be added to Menus are pages and some categories, I think it makes sense to move it under Pages as opposed to Appearance.
I know it’s a theme function and theme functions are added to Appearance (Widgets, Header Image, etc) but I think the average user will look for it under Pages – since that’s what they’re going to manage.

It does not belong under Pages, it belongs under Appearance. Menus is a meta function to determine the appearance of menus on the web site. The new menus are not limited to pages, but include categories and custom links. We will not move it out of Appearance.

Hi Jane… I started this thread recently, thought you might like to comment on it…

Hi Jane,
I think you should rename the ‘Delete’ link on the new page menu drag-n-drop to ‘Hide’. The word delete may make users believe they are indeed deleting a page when in fact they are not… they are only HIDING it from the menu.
Regards,
Pete
