One of the WP local installs I would recommend is Instant WordPress. It seems best for many beginners and / or those who do not want to learn more about AMPs.

I’ve been working with ServerPress, which is both Mac and Windows and has a free version (3 WordPress installs).

One big advantage of ServerPress is that it gives a full “regular” url ending in .dev (as in http://mysite.dev), rather than localhost.

I was wondering about the .dev top level domain name. It has not been assigned yet. But there is a process that is assigning it. Or potentially assigning it. There were two applicants, one of them dropped out, and now it stands with one (Google) still being considered.
